The Milner York

We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Milner: great location, amenities and service. The hotel is close to the centre, easy stroll and you are able to view the amazing Minster. Our room, king superior was great: comfortable bed & the bathroom- wow!!! The roll top bath was fab! All staff were courteous and friendly. Breakfast tasty too! We had a wonderful stay & would definitely return when visiting York again.

If you are Chinese, I strongly suggest thinking twice before staying here. I was first assigned a room in the side building that reeked of mould and had a broken bathroom sink. After complaining, I was moved to an accessible room on the same floor, despite having no accessibility needs — no bathtub, an absurdly tiny sink, and a mirror positioned for wheelchair users. If this was considered an appropriate replacement, perhaps they should have provided a wheelchair too. What made the room allocation even more questionable was that the floor, with around 11–12 rooms, appeared largely empty. And it certainly wasn’t because of good soundproofing — I could clearly hear guests talking in other rooms. So why was I first given a mouldy, broken room, and then an entirely unsuitable accessible room when the floor did not even appear full? Separately, there was a white female receptionist whose behaviour made the experience even worse: dramatic eye-rolling, a condescending attitude, followed by the most artificial “professional” smile imaginable. I cannot prove the motivation behind the room allocation, but as a Chinese guest, the entire experience left me feeling singled out and discriminated against. A terrible room can be an accident. Repeatedly questionable treatment is harder to explain away.

I stayed for two nights. I stayed in one of the Sidings Double rooms and was pleased with the size, comfort and cleanliness of my room. It was a very quiet part of the hotel, and although I had a great view of the garden and station - I heard no noise at all so had a very peaceful sleep. The only slight disappointment I have, is that the hotel pool was quite tiny and was too crowded even at an off peak time, but this does not detract from the hotel and the leisure facility is really just a bonus - there is so much to see and do within the city that I had plenty to keep me occupied during my stay. York is a magical place. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. I have already booked this hotel again to bring my young son and do a spooky ghost tour in the autumn. Location-wise this hotel can’t be beaten, and the hotel staff are super helpful and friendly.

I recently stayed at The Milner York, and unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations for a 4-star hotel. The biggest disappointment was the cleanliness. The room was not cleaned to an acceptable standard, as shown in the photos I took during my stay. This was by far the most concerning part of the experience. The location is definitely the hotel’s strongest point. It’s situated right outside York railway station, making it extremely convenient for travellers, and it’s only about a 10-minute walk to the city centre. The service was average. One thing that surprised me was that, after checking in early, there was no luggage delivery service to the room. For a hotel of this rating, I expected a higher level of service. The hotel itself feels very dated. While I understand it’s a historic building, the facilities are extremely old, and there is a noticeable musty smell throughout. The furniture and amenities also feel well past their prime and could benefit from significant refurbishment. We stayed in one of the side buildings, which is quite a walk from the main building. This wasn’t mentioned clearly beforehand and made the experience less convenient. Overall, the excellent location is the main reason to consider this hotel, but the cleanliness, ageing facilities, and average service mean I wouldn’t expect a true 4-star experience.

I stayed in one of those “slidings” room which was off the hotel on a side annex. I don’t mind the annex but the rooms were motel quality. Yellow stained tub, stained carpet, cracked sink, bubbling peeling paint everywhere (bathroom and bedroom). The outside of the window was covered in cobwebs so looking out the window made you feel creepy. One towel had a big stain and the room just felt gross. The only thing I felt was clean was the bed sheets. If it was some budget motel with rooms for $80 I wouldn’t have minded, but for the price of about $230 a night I expected a lot more. Staff was fine and breakfast had some nice choices.

The Milner York features a grand late-Victorian facade built from distinctive yellow Scarborough brick. Inside, the stunning entrance lobby showcases an ornate historical dome and elegant monochrome tiled flooring. The hotel's crown jewel is a sweeping, central iron staircase surrounded by high ceilings. Public lounges beautifully blend historic opulence with plush chesterfield sofas and herringbone wood floors. However, multiple guests note that the contemporary bedrooms are noticeably smaller in size. This compact room layout is especially apparent within the modern "Sidings" annexe.
