Danzhou travel guide and discussion

📍Danzhou, Hainan. An artificial, flower-shaped island reclaimed from the sea, divided into islands 1, 2, and 3. Most tourists only visit the popular streets on Island 1, ignoring the residential areas, hidden photo spots, and local vibes of Island 2. Below, we uncover unique experiences that tour groups won't arrange, covering photography, beachcombing, slow vacations, and secret night views. I. Island 1 | Hidden spots to avoid the crowds (lesser-known locations within popular attractions) 1. The lawn behind the Wedding Manor to photograph the castle without the crowds Most people crowd the front entrances of the 9 churches to take photos. ✅ Exclusive tip: Head to the large lawn behind the manor and use a low-angle shot to capture multiple churches in one frame without other tourists in the shot. During the golden hour from 5:30 PM–6:30 PM, the soft sunset light hits the white domes, creating a perfect atmosphere. After dark, the lights turn on, making it an excellent spot to watch the sea light show without having to crowd into the main square. Tip: Admission is free. Don't just photograph the popular churches; the side and back areas are the real hidden gems. 2. High-altitude observation deck at the Rare Plant Botanical Garden (overlooking the island's flower-shaped outline) Many tourists just walk around the garden and leave, missing the observation deck at the top of the hill. ✅ Exclusive tip: Follow the rainforest trail to the top platform. It's the only place where you can see the full view of all 3 "petals" of Ocean Flower Island, surrounded by giant tropical trees and palms. Hide in the shade during noon to escape the heat, enjoy the sea breeze, and look out over the entire artificial island spread across the sea. It feels like an aerial shot and is perfect for photos. There are many rare tropical flowers in the garden, and it's less crowded in the early morning, making it great for forest-style portraits. 3. The quiet bay north of Twin Beach (avoid the crowds) The main area of Twin Beach is packed with tourists. Walk a few hundred meters north, and the crowds instantly disappear. ✅ Exclusive tip: Enjoy the jelly-colored water and fine white sand while sitting on the rocks to watch the sunset over the sea. Skip the paid activities like jet skis and just enjoy the quiet sea breeze. In the evening, as the tide recedes, you can look for small crabs in the crevices of the rocks—perfect for sitting and relaxing. ⚠️ Note: There are dangerous undercurrents near the shore; do not go far from the beach into the water. 4. Quiet night tour of the Theme Street (off-peak experience) The theme dining street is packed with people at 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM. ✅ Exclusive tip: Come after 10:00 PM. Shops will be closing, but the exotic European-style buildings will still be lit up, and there will be very few tourists. You can easily take photos of the empty European-style town and experience the quiet night view of the island after the hustle and bustle fades. II. Island 2 | Hidden local experiences (90% of tourists don't come here) Island 1 focuses on sightseeing and entertainment; Island 2 is the residential island, where all the local life is. Rent an electric scooter to ride around the island and unlock another side of Ocean Flower Island. 1. Hidden volcanic rock coast for beachcombing 📍The outer coastline of Island 2, a free, wild beach. ✅ Exclusive tip: During the early morning low tide (6:00 AM–7:00 AM is best), dig for small crabs, pick up hermit crabs, and collect beautiful seashells in the rocky area. It's an unspoiled, natural coastline without commercial packaging, making it a great experience for families. Don't come at noon; there is no shade and the sun is intense. 2. Roaming the coastline by electric scooter Rent a small electric scooter on Island 2 and ride slowly along the coastal road. You'll see coconut trees, flower-filled residential balconies, and fishing boats near the shore, all while feeling the sea breeze. There are many lesser-known sunset viewing platforms along the way, which are quieter than those on Island 1. Along the residential streets, you can find affordable Danzhou rice noodles and Qingbuliang, with prices much lower than the commercial streets on Island 1. 3. Quiet beach at Baishawan Baishawan on Island 2 has few tourists and calm waters. ✅ Exclusive tip: Bring a picnic mat for a beach picnic and watch the fishing boats go by. You can book simple snorkeling through your homestay to see small fish in the shallow water. It's perfect for those who want to escape the noise and quietly enjoy the sea. 4. Local seafood market experience At the Island 2 wet market, you can buy fresh seafood directly and have it cooked at a nearby restaurant, which is much more cost-effective than the restaurants in the Island 1 scenic area. In the evening, you can see the catch the fishermen have just brought ashore, experiencing real island life and avoiding the price markups of the scenic area restaurants. III. Immersive unique experiences, off the beaten path 1. Sunset walk on the sea boardwalk There is a boardwalk extending into the sea next to the bridge entering Island 1. ✅ Exclusive tip: At sunset, the sea is covered in orange-gold light, perfect for photographing silhouettes of the bridge and island buildings. Watching the sunset here offers a completely different perspective than from the beach. 2. In-depth, off-peak visit to the Ocean Park Regular tourists crowd into the park in the afternoon. ✅ Exclusive tip: Enter as soon as the park opens, prioritize visiting the beluga whale and penguin pavilions, and time your visit to see the beluga performance. Avoid the midday heat by staying in the indoor venues. It's not just about seeing the animals; take a slow walk through the underwater tunnel to capture photos of the underwater light and shadows. 3. Short visit to nearby fishing villages (off-island experience) Take a taxi for about 10 minutes to Baimajing Fishing Port. ✅ Exclusive tip: Stroll around the fishing port pier, watch fishermen unloading cargo and mending nets, and eat local fried shrimp cakes and fresh seafood at the open-air food stalls. Experience the local coastal fishing village life of Danzhou and step out of the atmosphere of a purely artificial scenic area. IV. Two simplified itineraries you can copy directly ✅ Route A | One-day photography tour Afternoon: Lawn behind the Wedding Manor → Rare Plant Botanical Garden observation deck → Rocks on the north side of Twin Beach; Evening: Sunset on the sea boardwalk; Night: Light show at the Wedding Manor, stroll through the quiet theme street at 10:00 PM; If you have time: Ride along the coastline of Island 2. ✅ Route B | Slow-paced family trip Early morning: Beachcombing on the volcanic rock coast of Island 2; Morning: Polar animals at the Ocean Park; Afternoon: Rest and escape the heat; Evening: Picnic at Baishawan beach; Night: Affordable seafood snacks on Island 2. V. Exclusive tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Admission to the island is free, but some parks and experience projects require separate tickets. Private cars cannot enter Island 1; please park in the external parking lot and take the shuttle bus to the island. 2. Food prices on the commercial streets of Island 1 are on the higher side. For affordable food, prioritize Island 2. 3. The UV rays in Hainan are extremely strong; be sure to use heavy-duty sun protection at the beach. Wear non-slip shoes when beachcombing, as the rocks are sharp. 4. There are complex undercurrents at sea. Do not swim in deep water at wild beaches; stick to viewing from the shore. 5. During holidays, the queues for the island shuttle bus are long. If you have time, we highly recommend renting an electric scooter on Island 2 for more freedom.

#howislivingthere When I first visited Hainan, I looked at it like a traveller. The beaches. The coconut trees. The warm weather. The seafood. The tropical atmosphere. Everything felt like a holiday. But then I started wondering: What would it actually feel like to live here? Not just stay for a few days. Not wake up excited because I had somewhere new to explore. But actually wake up in Hainan on an ordinary Monday morning. 🌅 I think the mornings would feel completely different I imagine waking up to warm air and sunlight. Maybe seeing palm trees outside the window. Hearing scooters passing by. Feeling the humidity as soon as I step outside. As a traveller, these things would make me feel like I was on holiday. But if I lived there, they would simply become part of my normal morning. And I think that is a strange feeling. The things that make a place feel exotic to a traveller can eventually become ordinary to the people who live there. 🥥 I think I would love the slower feeling of life There is something about Hainan that made me feel like I did not always need to rush. The warm weather seems to encourage a slower rhythm. The beaches make you want to stay longer. The afternoons can feel less hurried. Sometimes, I imagine myself sitting somewhere with a cold drink, not needing to immediately go anywhere. That feeling would probably be one of the things I loved most about living there. After spending so much time rushing through life, I think it would be nice to have somewhere that constantly reminded me to slow down.

#arrivalguide Arriving in Hainan Island was exciting, but there were a few things I wish I had known beforehand that would have made my first day much smoother. The first thing you'll notice is the warm, humid tropical air the moment you step outside. If you're arriving from a cooler climate, it can feel surprisingly intense, so keep a bottle of water handy and wear light, breathable clothing. Don't try to do too much on your first day. After checking into your hotel, take some time to relax, enjoy a local meal, or walk along the nearest beach. Hainan is best experienced at a slower pace, and there's no need to rush. It's also a good idea to keep some cash or a payment method that works locally. While many places accept digital payments, having a backup option can be helpful, especially at smaller shops or local markets. If you're planning to visit popular attractions, check the weather before heading out. The tropical sun is much stronger than it looks, so sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essentials. Most importantly, don't expect every famous attraction to be the highlight of your trip. Some of my favorite memories came from simple moments—drinking a fresh coconut, watching the sunset by the sea, and wandering through quiet streets without a plan. My advice? Arrive with an open mind, take your time, and let Hainan surprise you. Sometimes the best experiences aren't the ones you planned.

#howislivingthere After spending time in Hainan Island, I could understand why some people choose to stay much longer than planned. Life here feels calm, and there's less pressure to constantly be on the move. I loved how many people spent their evenings outdoors. As the weather cooled down, the beaches, parks, and streets became lively with families, couples, and friends enjoying the fresh air. It wasn't about expensive entertainment—it was about appreciating simple moments together. Fresh fruit and seafood were easy to find, and eating local food became part of my daily routine. Every meal felt fresh, and I found myself looking forward to trying something new each day. Of course, the tropical climate takes some getting used to. The heat and humidity can be tiring, especially if you're not used to it. But after a few days, I learned to slow down, take breaks, and enjoy the island at its natural rhythm. Living in Hainan may not be exciting every single day, but that's exactly what makes it special. It's a place where life feels peaceful, simple, and closely connected to nature.

#overratedspots Before visiting Hainan Island, I had seen countless videos showing endless white beaches, crystal-clear water, and the perfect tropical paradise. I arrived with very high expectations, thinking every corner would leave me speechless. But after spending time there, I realized that not every famous attraction lived up to the online hype. The busiest beaches were packed with tourists, especially during holidays. Instead of hearing only the sound of waves, I heard loud music, crowds, and people taking turns for the same photo spots. Sometimes it felt more like visiting a giant outdoor shopping district than escaping to nature. I also found that some commercial areas were filled with souvenir shops and expensive restaurants that looked almost identical. They were lively, but they didn't give me the authentic island atmosphere I was hoping for. That doesn't mean Hainan isn't worth visiting. I still loved the warm sea breeze, tropical fruits, fresh seafood, and beautiful sunsets. My favorite moments weren't at the famous landmarks—they were the quiet early mornings, walking along a less crowded beach, chatting with friendly locals, and simply watching the ocean without rushing to the next attraction. This trip reminded me that the most popular place isn't always the most memorable. Sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you step away from the crowds and stop chasing the "must-see" spots. Those peaceful, ordinary moments became the memories I treasure the most. If I ever return to Hainan, I would spend less time checking famous attractions off a list and more time slowing down, exploring hidden beaches, and enjoying the island at my own pace.

A huge fairytale hotel on Ocean Flower Island, Danzhou. The Castle Hotel is located on an artificial island near Paipu Town in Danzhou, northwest of Hainan Island. The Castle Hotel is shaped like a castle and sits on the island's upper left petal. At the hotel entrance, you're greeted by a giant pink bunny. The spacious spaces from the reception area to the building's corridors create the feeling of being in a huge castle (and indeed, you are). Everything in the hotel is this size, except for the rooms. This speaks volumes about its large capacity; it's probably very busy during peak season! The ground floor has children's play areas. The second floor houses bars, restaurants, and a gym. The hotel is more geared towards families with children 👶 (this is reflected in its rating: #1 family-friendly hotel on Ocean Flower Island, and you can see it in the theme of the buildings and their rooms! Very unusual! We stayed in the forest building, and literally every detail speaks to this (rugs shaped like a lawn with frogs 🐸, legs on the nightstand and chairs shaped like animal paws 🐾). The hotel courtyard features a large outdoor pool with sun loungers and outdoor showers 🚿, as well as children's water play areas! When checking in, there was a bag hanging on the door handle containing a local gift 🧧 in the form of a silk Chinese scarf. A very nice bonus! The pool was deserted, so we went for a swim every morning before breakfast 🏊♂️ ❗️When visiting the pool, it is important to wear a swimming cap. If you don't have one, you can borrow one. At the lifeguard stand to the left of the pool! 🍽️ Breakfast: a buffet with a wide variety of dishes, from soups to pastries and freshly baked goods! You definitely won't go hungry! 😉 There's plenty of seating in the restaurant, but it's best to arrive either at the beginning or end of breakfast, as it gets quite crowded! Tourists come from all over the world, many with children! As a rule, when you book a hotel, you'll receive vouchers for various activities (on different petals of the island). Alternatively, you can buy them at reception. We used a voucher for the water park, which gave us all-day entry. Ask the receptionist about the transportation conditions, and remember when the bus leaves for the return trip to the hotel so you don't miss it! Distances on the island are long! For sports enthusiasts, the hotel has a gym with all the necessary equipment. You can also take a stroll in the park 📍, which is nearby (there's a large green area in the upper petal of the island). Territory). For a family vacation, we definitely recommend this hotel and all the activities on the island 👍😉 #castlehotel #oceanflowerisland #artificialisland #hainan #familyvacation #familytours #bigpool #familyhotel

A trip to Danzhou in January 2026 was simply a healing journey spanning dreamy romance and historical culture! First, I checked in at Ocean Flower Island (Figures 1-9). Here, you'll find pink and blue intertwined coastal sunset beaches, a whimsical fairy tale castle park, and a magnificent international convention and exhibition complex. Every snapshot captures a stunning scene, as if you've accidentally stumbled into a real-life dream island kingdom. Next, I moved on to the Millennium Ancient Salt Field (Figures 10-13). Walking on the basalt salt pans that have endured a thousand years of sun and rain, watching the pristine sea salt sparkle under the sun, you can almost hear the shouts of salt workers from a millennium ago. Every weathered mark holds the ancient yet vibrant memories of Danzhou's everyday life. Finally, I strolled through Dongpo Academy (Figures 14-18). Wandering through its serene and elegant ancient courtyards, touching the century-old sturdy trees and ink-scented steles, and reading the poems and calligraphy left by Mr. Dongpo, you can immerse yourself in the inheritance of a thousand-year-old cultural lineage and the spirit of literati. This trip to Danzhou truly brought together island romance, profound history, and rich cultural heritage. It's definitely a hidden gem and a must-visit destination for any trip to Hainan!

Had the chance to stay at Oubao Hotel (aka Castle Hotel Ocean Flower Island) and, OMG, it’s absolutely HUGE—like, over 5,000 rooms! You'll not miss that big pink bunny at the entrance. Navigating this place feels like a real-life maze 🧩. Seriously, don’t be surprised if you lose track of the lifts or your room a couple times 😂. We checked into Glacier Castle (make sure you know which castle you’re in—there are several, and it’s easy to get lost!). Our room was perfect for the three of us, and we got the cutest family setup ever! The kid’s bed came with adorable cartoon cushions and was totally Instagram-worthy against the light blue wall 💙. Officially designed for a child, but if you’re petite like me, it’s super comfy—even though the bed’s a bit on the hard side. Still, the room has thoughtful amenities for kids (so wholesome!), making it an absolute win for families. Breakfast? A *massive* buffet with endless choices, including delish Hainanese dishes from all over. The restaurant is so huge, you could get your steps in just walking to your seat! 🥢🍳 Where to find this family-friendly wonderland: Castle Hotel Ocean Flower Island Island No. 1, Ocean Flower Island, Binhai Avenue Pro tip: Book your room through trip.com for exclusive deals! #winterescape #familytravel #travel2026 #china #staycation #buffets

#Hainan #capybara I've long dreamed of seeing and touching a capybara up close, and maybe even feeding one! And then, unexpectedly, I got the chance during a trip to Hainan Ocean Flower Island. I met one at the amusement park! I was a little scared to approach it, because it has such huge incisors. And no wonder, because the capybara is the world's largest rodent, resembling a giant guinea pig. It lives in South America near bodies of water, swims and dives well, and weighs up to 65 kg. And it turns out this calm herbivore is known for its friendly nature. #Hainan

Just dropped by Ming Qing Food Street on Hainan Island and OMG, you guys, it’s a total foodie paradise! 🌟 I hit up 重庆菜 (Chongqing dishes) at 泰云老太婆摊摊面 (Tai Yun Old Lady Tan Tan Noodles) and let me tell you—the noodles are fire, the dumplings are seriously next-level, and honestly, everything here is sooo good! Strongly recommend for a late-night munch or a chill hangout spot with your foodie squad. 💯 The street itself is vibing with dreamy Chinese architecture, giving major old-school-meets-modern feels. At night, the whole area glows, especially with rivers and ponds reflecting the city lights. Such a perfect backdrop for those Insta-worthy dessert shots—think bowls of shaved ice stacked with juicy fruit and the cutest little dolls! 🍧🤩 Location deets: Ming Qing Food Street (明清食街) Address: Near No. 3 Tonghai Road, Haikou City, Hainan Island, China Open all week, majorly buzzing from late afternoon till midnight Don’t sleep on this spot if you’re hunting for legit Chinese eats in Hainan. This trip in March was absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to share my super comprehensive guide with you all. 📍Danzhou, located in the northwest of Hainan, is a treasure city with profound heritage and diverse customs👏. It was one of the first regions in Hainan to establish administrative divisions, and the wheels of history have left many traces here. There's the ancient Qiannian Salt Field, telling the legendary story of ancient salt production; the Songtao Reservoir, with its vast blue waves, nourishing the land; and the rich Danzhou Tiaosheng, with its cheerful rhythm and unique dance steps, showcasing the unique local folk customs. Danzhou is like a thick and fascinating storybook. 🚗【Transportation Guide】 ✈️ If you're flying, there's Haikou Meilan International Airport nearby. After landing, transfer to a bullet train, which will take you directly to Danzhou in about 1 hour and enjoy the tropical scenery outside the window. It's super pleasant. 🚄 Danzhou has two high-speed train stations, Haitou Station and Baimajing Station, with many train services. After exiting the station, you can easily connect to buses or taxis, making it super easy to get to various attractions. Some city bus routes cover the attractions, and most operate from 6:00 to 20:00. You can pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay. | A popular, lesser-known hot spring. 🌊Lanyang Hot Spring, Hainan | A popular, lesser-known hot spring I recently discovered a hidden gem in Hainan - Lanyang Hot Spring. I have to share it with you! 🚗 It's easy to get to. It's less than an hour's drive from the city. As soon as you enter the Lanyang Hot Spring area, you can feel the difference from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's quiet and peaceful. 🌳 The environment is amazing! The entire hot spring area is surrounded by lush tropical plants, like a secret hot spring in a primeval forest. The sunlight shines through the leaves, creating a beautiful atmosphere for photos. There are many open-air pools, including private rooms and large pools for groups. 💧 The water quality is a highlight. It comes from deep underground and is a natural hot mineral water, rich in minerals and trace elements. The warm water envelops your body, instantly relieving fatigue and making your skin smooth. 💆‍♀️ There are many types of hot springs, including a red wine pool for beauty, which leaves you smelling like wine and feeling like a plump grape. 🚩Hainan Danzhou ✨Baocang Yun She✨ A hidden gem for family trips near Ocean Flower Island, just a 50-minute drive away. The cabins, large lawns, bonfire parties, playgrounds, and petting zoos are perfect for kids. The air is fresh, and it's a great place for those who like peace and quiet. Highly recommended! 👍 🏡 This is a shared farm with a great environment. I was initially attracted by the detached cabins, thinking that the yard would be a great place for kids to play. However, the cabins have a bit of a smell, and there are plenty of other areas in the park for kids to play, so the yard isn't as useful as I thought it would be. 🔥 The bonfire party at night is lively, and there's a free karaoke machine. Eating barbecue while watching the beautiful moon and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere is very relaxing. 👶 There are also handicrafts for kids to make, frisbees to play with on the large lawn, and camping equipment available. 🧑‍💼 The park is large, and you'll need to take the electric sightseeing car to get around. Call the front desk in advance, and a staff member will come to pick you up. The service is great. 🥰

A trip to Yerong beach is one of the most exciting adventures that happened to us in Hainan! It is a huge beach, that seems to be endless, with a fabulous white sand! It is quite wild, or you can say 'undeveloped', but for us it was an obvious advantage. There are nearly no people at all, except several fishermen with their nets. No one will disturb you here, and you can swim whenever you want! 🚌🚎🚕 It is not that easy to get here, even if you'll take a taxi to the beach, it would be a problem to find a taxi that will bring you back to the city. The road is quite bumpy and dusty as well, so even though you can always rent a scooter, we would definitely recommend to rent a car for several days. You can use sharing service immediately upon arrival to Baimajin train station (白马井站). 🍔🍟🥪 There are no cafes or restaurants on this beach, so be prepared to take some food and drinks with you. It is a great place to have a picnic with amazing view! 🌅🏝🏖 Absolutely surreal place, as such beaches are always overcrowded in China! Can't wait to get back here with a tent to spend couple more days! #passionpassport #beachlife #summervacation #gooutside #hainanlife

Ok, photos might be not that impressive, but the polished texture of these ancient stones under the palm of your hand can provide you an absolutely amazing experience! These stones have been producing slat for centuries, they are scorched under the harsh southern sun, and hand polished by tens of generations of local people. To be honest, I was not expecting that much from that site, but with a first touch we caught that sentimental poetic wave. So if you are interested in history, this attraction is definitely worth visiting! 🚕🚎🚌 We would recommend to take a car for several days immediately at Baimajin train station (you can use car sharing services), coz there are plenty of amazing attractions around Danzhou, like wild volcanic beaches, distant fishermans villages, etc etc, where it is not so easy to get to. 🍔🍟🥪 There are many small cafes right on the spot, where you can enjoy some fresh sea food. Of course, these places are super ascetic, with plastic chairs and so on, but local food can be really delicious here! 🏵 Of course, you can buy this local salt here, but to be honest, it doesn't seem to be produced with this ancient method. But of course, it is totally up to you in what to believe😉 To summ up, it can be some new experience that won't take too much time. Worth visiting if you are a history fan! #urbanexplorer #amazingplace #historywalk
