Of those funds, £1,300 came from collections; the remaining £500 was Bishop Power's money. The land was on the city's northern edge at the time in the "wild, unbroken forests." It was dubbed "Power's Folly" and criticized because it was so far away from the city's centre, then King St E and Front St E. The 14th-century English Gothic Revival style church was designed by a prominent Toronto architect, William Thomas. Bishop Power laid its cornerstone in 1845 in front of 4,000 people. Two years later, Bishop Power left for Europe to search for priests for the city's growing diocese and raise more funds.

Late February While staying in France, I took the TGV from Paris via Rennes to visit Mont Saint-Michel. Since I stayed for two days and one night, I was able to take my time sightseeing and see Mont Saint-Michel lit up at night. The souvenir shops close early, but the restaurants are open until around 10pm so I didn't have any trouble finding something to eat. The hotel was also friendly, polite and clean. The area’s main city, Strasbourg, has been named the capital of Christmas. The oldest and largest Christmas market in France is located in Alsace. It opened in 1570 and has more than 300 stalls. Dates for Strasbourg Christmas Market: From November 24 to December 24. Not all stalls will be open on December 24, 25 and 26, so I recommend you go a bit prior. The Christmas atmosphere will not be the only thing that impresses about Strasbourg. Its historic center was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The Strasbourg Cathedral dates to 1015 and is Gothic in style. It is one of the most impressive cathedrals I have ever seen. You’ll love it!

To get to Mont Saint-Michel, take the train from Paris Montparnasse Station to Rennes Station, then a bus from Rennes Station for about an hour. It is recommended to make reservations in advance for both the train and the bus. In particular, there are few buses, so if you purchase on the day, you may not be able to board.
