Wat Sangwet is an ancient temple, originally named Wat Bang Lamphu. It is located on Khlong Bang Lamphu on the bank of the canal since the Ayutthaya period. When King Rama I was crowned and established Bangkok as the capital and appointed his younger brother, Somdet Krom Phra Rajawang Bowon, as the Front Palace, the Krom Phra Rajawang Bowon accepted Wat Bang Lamphu to be a patron for a Khmer concubine who wanted to become a nun. Later, in the reign of King Rama III, who was one of the kings who loved building and maintaining temples the most, he ordered the temple to be renovated and gave it a new name, Wat Sangwet Wisayaram, which is the current name.
