Getting There - The best and easiest way is to go there by car / taxi. Tickets - For 80 yuans, you can get a ticket to Waiba temple (down the road and much smaller), and the Putuo Zongcheng temple (which is the one known as the Little Potala Palace). Attractions - so many things to see, but the Red Roof (if I’m not mistaken) was inspired in the Tibetan Potala Palace, so the architecture and the colors - maroon, white, yellow and green - really stand out when compared to other temples. Hotels - there are some hotels nearby, and I definitely recommend the Puning Mountain Resort Hotel if you want to stay at a place that has beautiful Chinese architecture. Food & Restaurants - When you go out from the temple complex, there are many shops selling noodles, almonds, and so on. This hotel was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. We traveled to Chengde by train from Beijing and then took a taxi to the hotel. The staff were available on WeChat to answer any questions we had. Once we arrived we were show to our room which was across from the pool and deck. The view was perfect and the infinity pool cool and perfect for swimming and taking in the view. We ate all our meals at the hotel and the food was delicious. There were friendly dogs in the gardens. during the evening and on the weekends, the gardens filled up with visitors coming for a barbecue dinner, so grab a table early! Now that there is a high speed train right from Beijing you can get to Chengde in about an hour making it a great day trip. I was supposed to go to Tibet earlier in the year and Covid put a stop to that. Chengde was a great alternative. I would suggest starting the day at some of the temples around town, there are a few large ones up on the hills. Then heading to town, there were a few flee markets where you can go shopping and get a few extremely heavy Buddhist statues (why I suggest doing it later in the day). Unfortunately we had plans of exploring the rest of town later on but rain clouds appeared out of nowhere so we called a didi to take us back to the train station.

Girls! Chengde, this royal summer resort, is absolutely amazing! I declare this the most stunning travel destination I've visited this year! 🔥🔥🔥 First, you must check in at the Mountain Resort! This was the favorite spot of Qing Dynasty emperors! The entire resort is 8 times larger than the Forbidden City! Girls, make sure to wear comfortable shoes, or you'll be walking until your legs give out! 😱 I recommend buying a combo ticket to visit 72 scenic spots. My favorites are the Misty Rain Tower and the Ten Thousand Trees Garden—perfect for photos! I suggest coming as early as 8 AM when there are fewer people and the lighting is great; every shot looks like a masterpiece! Next up are the Outer Eight Temples! The Putuo Zongcheng Temple is basically a mini Potala Palace! The golden roofs sparkle under the sun, full of Tibetan charm! Remember to rent a set of Tibetan clothes for photos—your social media will get over a hundred likes! 🙌 The glazed archway at the Xumi Fushou Temple is breathtaking; I recommend visiting at dusk for the amazing sunset light and shadow effects! Now for the food! You must try the almond tea! The old brand "Zhao Family Almond Tea" is legendary! It’s fragrant and smooth—I can drink three bowls a day! 🍵 Also, try Chengde’s Donkey Roll, soft, glutinous, and sweet—way better than Beijing’s! Yesterday, I visited the Yanyu Pavilion on the islet in the heart of South Lake. It was drizzling lightly, perfectly matching the poetic meaning of "misty rain." Interestingly, the history of Yanyu Pavilion predates the islet itself—the pavilion was originally built over a thousand years ago, while the islet was formed only about 470 years ago. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Prefect Zhao Ying dredged South Lake and piled up the silt to create the islet, a brilliant example of ancient wisdom turning waste into treasure. After the islet took shape, not only was the original Yanyu Pavilion relocated here, but pavilions and terraces were gradually planned and landscapes arranged, allowing a garden blending culture and nature to grow from the silt. The most striking cultural mark on the islet is the deep affection of Emperor Qianlong. He traveled south six times and ascended Yanyu Pavilion eight times, leaving behind many poems praising the scenery. Today, the imperial stele pavilion is still preserved on the islet, where visitors can admire his calligraphy and brushwork. Now, Yanyu Pavilion refers not just to a single building but to the entire Jiangnan garden architectural complex centered around it. This place embodies typical elements of Jiangnan gardens: built by the water, with lake stones piled into hills, and flowers and trees complementing each other. The rockery is especially grand and undulating, rare among Jiangnan gardens. Among the flora, two ancient ginkgo trees over 400 years old stand prominently in front of Yanyu Pavilion, strong and upright on either side. Unfortunately, both are male trees, producing leaves but no flowers or fruit, a small regret left unintentionally by the ancients. Also quietly stationed by the water in front of Yanyu Pavilion is the famous South Lake Red Boat—the commemorative boat of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China. This replica silk-net boat vividly restores the groundbreaking historical scene of the summer of 1921. It is not only the "cradle of the Chinese revolution" but also symbolizes the red starting point and the birth of the original aspiration. The Red Boat and Yanyu Pavilion together create a scenic harmony, adding a solemn historical weight to the gentle charm of the Jiangnan garden, making the islet a unique sacred place where natural beauty, classical aesthetics, and red culture intertwine.
