Wat Chedi Luang, a must-visit Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai

Chedi Luang Temple is located in the middle of the ancient city of Chiang Mai. If you haven’t been to Wat Chedi Luang, don’t say you’ve been to Chiang Mai! With a history of more than 600 years, Wat Chedi Luang is the most important temple in Chiang Mai. Chedi Luang means "big pagoda". This huge pagoda, which mixes Indian and Ceylonese styles, was about 98 meters high when it was built in 1411 AD. Later, it experienced damage caused by earthquakes and the Thai-Myanmar War, leaving only about 60 meters of this huge pagoda. However, even so, it is still the tallest pagoda in Chiang Mai. The stone carvings of elephants surrounding the Great Pagoda should have originally formed a full circle, but after so much destruction and hardships, only a few are left. There are other Buddha statues enshrined around the Great Pagoda, including a "Reclining Buddha". The image of the reclining Buddha represents the last important moment in the Buddha's life, "Nirvana", symbolizing that the Buddha's practice is complete, his karma has been exhausted, and he will enter a state of no birth, no death, and freedom from obstacles.
