We had a great experience with this company. They helped us book our entire trip, and everything turned out fantastic, down to the smallest detail. 🇵🇪 Los Uros, Peru — The Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca Los Uros are a group of extraordinary floating islands on Lake Titicaca, near Puno, Peru. The islands are traditionally made almost entirely from totora reeds, a plant that grows abundantly around the lake. 🌊 What makes Los Uros unique? The islands literally float on the lake. Layers of dried totora reeds are woven and stacked together to create the island surface. The reeds are continuously added because the lower layers gradually decompose. On the islands, you can see: · 🏠 Reed houses · 🛶 Traditional totora-reed boats · 🌾 Totora reed gardens and structures · 🎨 Traditional handicrafts · 👨👩👧 Uros communities and their way of life 👥 The Uros people The Uros are an Indigenous people with a long history associated with Lake Titicaca. Their culture, traditions, reed craftsmanship, fishing, and tourism practices are important parts of life around the islands. One important nuance: the exact historical origins and continuity of the modern Uros communities are complex and debated by researchers, so the popular claim that they are simply an unchanged pre-Inca population should be treated cautiously. 📍 Where are they? Los Uros are located on Lake Titicaca, close to Puno, in southeastern Peru. Most visitors reach the islands by boat from Puno, with tours commonly taking a few hours. 🛶 Traditional reed boats One of the most memorable parts of a visit is seeing the famous totora boats. They are traditionally constructed from bundles of reeds and have distinctive, sometimes animal-like decorative designs. Some tours offer an optional ride on these boats. 🌤️ Best time to visit The dry season, roughly May to October, usually offers clearer skies and better conditions for sightseeing. However, Lake Titicaca is at around 3,800 m above sea level, so the altitude can be challenging. 📸 Why visit? Los Uros offers a completely different experience from Machu Picchu. Instead of ancient stone cities, you’ll experience floating islands, traditional reed architecture, high-altitude lake scenery, and Indigenous cultural traditions.
