Shamian Island was historically a concession area for both the British and the French. The island retains many European-style buildings and is known as the 'Museum of European Architecture.' The architectural styles are diverse, including the British Romantic-style Customs Red Building, the Gothic Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the arcade-style building at No. 48 Shamian Street, and the classical revival-style HSBC Bank, reflecting Western architectural techniques and art.
