Spring Whispers with Monkeys and Hidden Bears – Kamikōchi

This spring, I spent a quiet, refreshing morning walking through the stunning valley of Kamikōchi. Snow still crowned the mountain peaks, but down below, spring was just beginning. Trees were budding, the air was crisp, and the whole landscape felt like it was slowly waking up. I started my walk at Taisho Pond, where the reflection of Mt. Yake shimmered on the glassy surface. From there, I followed the peaceful path along the Azusa River, headed toward Kappa Bridge, and then continued deeper into the forest toward Myojin Pond. The full loop took me around 4–5 hours with plenty of stops to enjoy the scenery. The sound of melting snow and the rushing river followed me along the way. At Myojin pond, the water was crystal clear, surrounded by still trees and soft moss. It’s a place that invites silence. I paused there for a while, just taking in the stillness. On the way, I saw groups of playful Japanese macaques—monkeys swinging through trees and chasing each other in the fresh spring air. I didn’t see any bears, but there were warning signs and claw marks on trees reminding me that they’re around, even if hidden. Kamikōchi in spring is quiet, wild, and full of small wonders.
