Battle of the Nations Memorial in Leipzig, Germany

The Battle of the Nations Monument was built to commemorate the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. It was built primarily with donations and funds from the city of Leipzig and was completed in 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the war at a cost of 6 million German marks. Leipzig's most famous landmark stands in the center of the battlefield of the 1813 War of Nations, not far from Napoleon's former command post. Made of concrete and granite porphyry, it was completed in 1913 and is 91 meters high. From the observation deck you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Leipzig and its surroundings. This huge monument was built according to a plan by Bruno Schmitz, and its basement is decorated with knights, colossal figures nearly 10 meters high. The battle was a key battle that ended hostilities in the War of the Sixth Coalition. The combined forces of Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden were led by Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Prince Carl Philip of Schwarzenberg. There were Germans fighting on both sides, as Napoleon's army also included Germans conscripted from the left bank of the Rhine, which had been annexed by France, as well as the armies of his German allies in the Confederation of the Rhine. The location where this monument stands is said to be the site of the bloodiest battle of the time, from where Napoleon ordered his army to retreat.
