Mainz, Germany

Mainz is located on the left bank of the Rhine at the confluence of the Main River. It is the capital and largest city of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city was originally founded by the Roman general Drusus between 13 and 12 BC and was the capital of the Roman province of Germania Superior and a military fortress on the northernmost border of the Roman Empire, and the base of the Roman fleets in Germania Superior and Germania Inferior. Mainz became an important city in the 8th century AD and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. By the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the Archbishop of Mainz was the Archbishop of the Empire and the most important of the seven electors of Germany. Mainz is the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable printing press, who produced his first books, including the Gutenberg Bible, in Mainz in the early 1450s. During the French Revolution, Mainz changed hands between Prussia and France several times. In May 1814, Napoleon's army, which had been weakened, voluntarily evacuated Mainz. The city was severely damaged during World War II, and most of the historic buildings in the city were destroyed in more than 30 bombings by the Allies. Mainz is known for its transport hub, wine production and many reconstructed historic buildings.
