5 Magical Days in Matera 🇮🇹

Visited: Last Month | August 2025 Spending five days in Matera felt like stepping into a dream carved out of stone. Every winding alley, cave church, and sun-drenched piazza told a story that we felt honored to walk through together. We stayed in a boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the Sassi di Matera, waking up each morning to sweeping views of ancient dwellings cascading down the hillside. Our days were a perfect balance of adventure and slow exploration—starting with sunrise walks along the Gravina canyon, followed by coffee in quiet little cafes with stunning views. We explored the must-see Casa Grotta, wandered through the hauntingly beautiful Rupestrian churches, and were awestruck by the frescoes inside Santa Maria de Idris. One evening, we joined a walking tour that ended with sunset over the city—absolutely unforgettable. Dining in Matera was a highlight of its own. From handmade orecchiette and crispy lucanica sausage to rich wines from nearby vineyards, every meal felt like a celebration. Our favorite dinner was at a candlelit restaurant inside a cave—equal parts romantic and surreal. On our last day, we hiked across the ravine to the Murgia plateau for panoramic views of the Sassi—definitely worth the climb. We left Matera with full hearts, feeling deeply connected not only to each other, but to the ancient soul of this incredible city.
