Dining in Mong Kok | Jin Jiang Restaurant | Recommended Barbecued Pork and Pork Belly

On Mid-Autumn Festival evening, I went to Jin Jiang Restaurant in Mong Kok for waffles and shrimp cakes. It turns out they just officially opened on October 3rd. I love the calligraphy wall on the right side of the hallway; it's so Hong Kong-themed. The dinner market starts at 6 PM, so I quickly took a picture of the "Dragon and Phoenix Hall" before anyone else was around. The red sign with white ink listed the week's featured dishes, and I tried three waffles and shrimp cakes. Only a limited selection of #dim sum is available during the dinner market, so you have to go to the dim sum cart to choose. If you want steamed buns, rice rolls, and fried dim sum, visit the brunch market. Tea costs $16 per person. I ordered Tieguanyin tea for the waffles and shrimp cakes. The tea was rich, not astringent, and very delicious. The crab roe siu mai (large $32) had less shrimp than usual and more pork fat. The Jinxiu beef balls (medium $28) were large and perfectly cooked, with a thinner Worcestershire sauce. Having heard Jinjiang's #siumei is excellent, I tried the siumei combo ($188) and ordered the barbecued pork and pork belly. The barbecued pork came in six large pieces, thickly sliced, with the perfect balance of fat and lean, perfectly seasoned, and with a hint of burnt edges. It was indeed excellent. The pork belly was larger than expected, with crispy skin and tender meat, not too salty. The Jinjiang Shrimp Dumplings (top, $42) were a bit thinner, but I don't know if the skin was too thin; many of the dumplings were pierced, so I deducted points. After ordering the appetizers, we had the Steamed Beef with Tangerine Peel (large, $32), which I loved, but the tangerine peel flavor was lacking, which was a bit disappointing. The jelly water spinach in the pot ($128) retained its vibrant green color and was very flavorful. The live singing performance that evening, starting at 7pm, was a pleasant surprise. Singer Sammy performed several classic hits, starting with "The Moon Represents My Heart," followed by "Wish You Well," "Love Diary," and "Friends." Finally, I had a bowl of the long-awaited Baked Lotus Seed and Sago Pudding (special $35).
