#slowtraveling Tarma is the “Andean Rose Garden” at 3,050 m, 3 hours east of Lima by bus ($12–18 Cruz del Sur), but the flower valley and the small lake drive northwest toward Palca is where slow travel actually happens. I rented a bicycle in Tarma for $6/day (cash deposit, no card) and rode the 18 km gravel road to Laguna de Huacarpay’s smaller sister lake, Laguna Seca, at 3,400 m. The road is not sealed past the 6 km mark — dry season (May–September) is fine, November rains make it a walker’s slog. Moss lines the irrigation ditches, not the hillsides — the valley floor is farmed, but every stone channel and the shaded north face of the quebrada wears a velvet coat. Flower season peaks March–May: lupins, papayas, red-hot pokers, and the tarma rose itself (a local cultivar, not wild) in every courtyard. I stopped at a roadside honey stand (S/8 a jar, raw, in a reused Nescafé bottle) and a cheese woman who sold me queso fresco for S/5 and pointed to a 200-year-old stone bridge the municipality doesn’t put on maps. Drive vs. ride: a colectivo to Palca is S/4, but it won’t stop for moss or flowers. The bike gave me 4 hours of stopping. Fuel up in Tarma — no services past the last greenhouse at km 9. Payment: soles only, the one ATM in Tarma ran out on a Sunday. Altitude tip: 3,400 m will wind you if you’re Lima-based at sea level for a week — go easy on the first climb. Mistake I saw: a couple in a hired taxi rushing the loop in 40 min and missing the lake entirely because the driver took the new paved bypass. Would you cycle 18 km of gravel for a private lake and a S/5 cheese stop? The valley convinced me before I reached the water.

If you ever travel to Peru, the land of the ancient Inca civilization, the most adorable animals that will welcome you and steal the hearts of every traveler are none other than the "alpaca gang" and the "llamas," fluffy and lively creatures that thrive in the Andes Mountains! 🇵🇪🦙⛰️
1. Alpacas & Llamas – The Fluffy, Grumpy Ruminants of the Andes Mountains 🦙🌾
These two species of camels are icons of Peru! Alpacas are smaller, with thick, fluffy fur and cute, doll-like faces, while llamas are larger, have longer ears, and tend to have a proud, slightly aloof expression. They often roam freely grazing in the tall grasslands, and it's especially heartwarming to see them toddling around while munching on grass or looking curious when they see a camera. I have to say, they're so cute you'll want to snap photos non-stop!
Must-see locations:
· Cusco and the Sacred Valley 🇵🇪: In Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, you'll find locals in colorful traditional clothing leading adorable alpacas along the ancient cobblestone streets (you can ask to take photos with them, with a small tip as a token of appreciation). In the Sacred Valley, you'll see herds of alpacas and llamas roaming freely on local farms and vast pastures.
· Machu Picchu ⛰️: A world-class highlight! Seeing llamas and alpacas peacefully grazing on the ancient stone steps of Machu Picchu, with towering mountains and morning mist as a backdrop, is a magical and incredibly cute sight—like stepping into a painting.
Recommendations:
· If you encounter them in nature or at ancient sites, maintain a safe distance and do not disturb or startle them, as some llamas may spit if they feel unsafe!
· It's recommended to bring warm clothing, as these areas are at high altitudes. The weather is relatively cool throughout the year.
· For those who want a close encounter and to learn about the local way of life, try visiting "Awanakancha," a wool conservation and weaving center in the Sacred Valley, where you can feed and take photos with the animals up close.
If you're planning a trip to Peru, don't forget to prepare your camera and capture some photos with these fluffy creatures in this historical land!
