A well-worth detour to Rila Monastery

#europeonbudget Founded in the 10th century, Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural, historical & architectural monuments. Unsurprisingly, it is also the largest & most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, still housing approximately 60 monks till this day. The sheer tranquility felt within the monastery grounds aside, what struck me most was the beauty & colourful detail of the frescoes (mural paintings executed upon freshly laid lime plaster) that covered several walls & ceilings entirely 😍😍😍
