A sense of security after the typhoon at Hyatt Place Sanya City Center

A truly valuable and meaningful stay. Coinciding with the passage of Typhoon Wutip (Butterfly), the first typhoon of the year, across Hainan, my original plan was to relax at the Kimpton in Lingshui, but the heavy rain made it impossible to step outside. I made a last-minute decision to return to Sanya, and upon hearing later that Lingshui had a complete power outage, I felt even more justified in my choice. Hunkering down in the city during severe weather definitely offers more security. Choosing Hyatt Place was a triple win. First, its downtown location offers convenience at a reasonable price. Second, it qualified for Hyatt’s newly launched quarterly promotion. Most importantly, it helped me complete my goal of staying at all six Hyatt-affiliated hotels in Hainan—a small but satisfying achievement. The hotel sits at the intersection of two major roads in Sanya’s new urban area, a location tourists wouldn’t typically seek out. However, the surrounding amenities are comprehensive. The hotel occupies the upper floors of a high-rise building, with west-facing rooms offering distant views of Sanya Bay. The building’s layout resembles a kidney shape, featuring a stunning square high-rise atrium with rounded corners and open curved balconies. The four corner rooms on each floor are designed as spacious studio suites, some reserved for elite member upgrades. These fan-shaped suites boast floor-to-ceiling windows with expansive views, a transparent window-side shower, and an extra-long sofa that converts into a bed. The hotel is member-friendly, with a pre-arrival courtesy call. During my half-month stay on the island across over a dozen hotels, service standards were consistently high—only one property skipped the pre-stay call (no names mentioned). This reflects Hainan’s overall strong service culture. The highlight is undoubtedly the rooftop outdoor pool and poolside bar, though it was closed due to the typhoon. The same floor houses a small indoor gym with five or six pieces of equipment, which was surprisingly full because of the weather. Breakfast the next day was modest, standard Hyatt Place fare—nothing extraordinary but with some local touches like Hounan rice noodles, shrimp cakes, and marinated noodles. Missing it wouldn’t be a tragedy. In summary, the hotel lacks island charm but suits long-term stays or short layovers.
