At first glance, Lee Daiwon’s paintings look like peaceful Korean landscapes. But the closer you get, the more incredible they become. Instead of painting mountains, orchards and trees with smooth blocks of color, Lee Daiwon built his landscapes with countless tiny strokes and dots — pink, blue, yellow, green and red layered over one another until the whole scene seems to vibrate. Lee Daiwon: Nothing Here Makes You Sad is the first major retrospective dedicated to the Korean artist at MMCA, bringing together works from across his career. What surprised me most was how different the paintings feel in person. From a distance, you see a mountain or an apple tree. Up close, the landscape almost disappears into thousands of individual marks of color. His subjects were often incredibly ordinary — the countryside, orchards, mountains and the nature he remembered from childhood — but he transformed them into something much more vivid and dreamlike. There’s also something especially beautiful about seeing the progression of his work in one exhibition. Earlier paintings feel more figurative and restrained, while later landscapes become increasingly filled with color and rhythm. And then there’s the setting: the exhibition is held at MMCA Deoksugung, inside Deoksugung Palace, so you can see the exhibition and explore one of Seoul’s royal palaces in the same visit. 📍 MMCA Deoksugung, Seoul 🎨 Lee Daiwon: Nothing Here Makes You Sad ✨ Best for: Korean modern art, painting & hidden cultural experiences in Seoul If you want to discover a Korean artist beyond the names you usually see internationally, this exhibition is absolutely worth adding to your Seoul art list. #leedaiwon #mmcadeoksugung #koreanart #koreanmodernart #seoulexhibition #seoulart #seoulmuseum #seoultravel #koreatravel #thingstodoinseoul

You don't have to pay for a skyline view in Seoul. It's easy to assume that seeing Seoul from above means buying a ticket to an observation deck, but some of the best views in the city are completely free. A few are even better because you get to see Seoul in a way that feels less like a tourist attraction.

Slowing down, time becomes more abundant, and the scenery unfolds leisurely with this abundance, no longer just checkpoints on a schedule, but a lingering charm to be savored repeatedly. I no longer calculate how much time I have left to waste, but instead feel grateful for having enough time to while away. I watched a snail slowly crawling in the middle of the road, without any intention of urging it on, but instead squatted down and walked with it for a while. I watched the sunset slowly sink below the horizon, watching the sky change from golden to orange-red, and then to deep purple. This process is slow and magnificent, worth waiting a lifetime for. My impromptu escape plan succeeded. This success lies in my triumph over modern society's... A morbid worship of efficiency. I sat down at a roadside tea stall, ordered the cheapest, coarse tea, yet it tasted like nectar. I had time to savor the aftertaste of each sip. The owner wasn't in a hurry to pack up, and I wasn't in a rush to leave. We chatted idly, our conversation brimming with the warmth and everyday life. In this slow-paced moment, I felt freed from the enslavement of time, becoming its master. That leisurely state of mind made me realize that true luxury isn't money, but having a period of undisturbed, completely personal time. In this time, the scenery is no longer just a passerby, but an old friend sharing a drink with me.
