#summervacay Just a short walk from Chinatown MRT Exit E, Jia Xiang Chinese Restaurant is where you’ll find comforting, robust flavours from three regions of China — Sichuan, Hunan, and Dongbei — all in one casual and fuss-free setting along New Bridge Road. The menu offers a solid mix of grilled skewers, deep-fried street snacks, homestyle stir-fries, and bubbling soup-based dishes. If you enjoy bold flavours — from mouth-numbing spice to sweet-and-sour classics — you’re in for a treat. Another plus: dishes can be customised to your liking. You can request less oil, less salt, no MSG, skip coriander or spring onions, and even adjust the spice level. Here’s what we tried and really enjoyed: Old Altar Pickled Fish – A large bubbling pot of tangy broth, rich with pickled mustard greens, vermicelli, and thick slices of tender fish. Sour, savoury, and full of fermented depth — ideal for those who like strong, punchy flavours. Chongqing Spicy Chicken – Crispy chicken bites tossed in dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns. Dry-fried and flavourful without being greasy, with that addictive numbing heat that lingers. Sweet & Sour Pork (Dongbei style) – Thinly sliced pork coated in a light, crackly batter and glazed in a sweet-tangy sauce. Still crispy even after sitting for a while — definitely one of the better renditions we've had. Grilled Chicken and Pork Skewers – Lightly charred, juicy, and seasoned with cumin and chilli. Reminds us of smoky street-side skewers you'd get at a night market. Grilled Crispy Sausage Skewers – Snappy on the outside, juicy inside, with a slight sweetness to the caramelised skin. A simple but satisfying bite. The space is clean, cosy, and casual — with a steady flow of regulars and tourists stopping by. Service is fast, portions are generous, and the variety on the menu makes it easy to mix and match across regions. If you're in the Chinatown area and looking for flavour-packed Chinese food that feels familiar yet diverse, Jia Xiang is a solid go-to.
