#September2025 Huqiu, formerly known as Haiyong Mountain, got its name from its shape, which resembles a crouching tiger. Legend also claims that King Helü of Wu during the Warring States Period was buried here and later transformed into a white tiger, perched atop the mountain, hence the name. In the Huqiu Scenic Area, ascending the steps and passing through different doorways reveals a variety of beautiful scenery. Along the way, you'll encounter ancient buildings, cliff-cut pools, gardens, and inscribed stones. The stone carvings bear the handwriting of literati from past dynasties, including the inscription "Huqiu Sword Pool" by the renowned calligrapher Yan Zhenqing. The most familiar building here is undoubtedly the Yunyan Temple Pagoda, known as "China's First Leaning Pagoda." Due to ground subsidence and rain erosion, the pagoda tilted. After reinforcement, it now maintains a tilt of several degrees. This octagonal brick pagoda is a beautiful sight and a popular photo spot. The most familiar legend is undoubtedly the tomb of the King of Wu, built beneath the cliffs of Jianchi. It's said that King Fuchai buried King Helü of Wu, who died in battle, along with 3,000 swords buried with him, in Jianchi. Since then, many kings have attempted to search for treasures there. Legend also circulates that, fearing tomb robbery, King Fuchai slaughtered over a thousand workers on a large rock outside Jianchi, staining the rock red with blood.
