Chihkan Tower in Tainan: A Historical Monument and Cultural Landmark

Located in Tainan City's West Central District, Chihkan Tower is a national monument that blends Dutch, Ming, Qing, and modern history. Built by the Dutch in 1653, it was originally named "Fort Provintia." The Han Chinese called it "Fanzilou" or "Red Hair Tower." It was once Taiwan's commercial and administrative center. After Zheng Chenggong's recapture of the city in 1662, it was renamed Chengtian Prefecture. During the Qing Dynasty, the Temple of the Sea God and Wenchang Pavilion were added, and its current appearance blends European fortress-style with Chinese architectural features. The nine Bishi steles (Qing Dynasty stone turtle-carrying steles) within the park are a striking highlight, revealing Tainan's rich history.
