The city center is also called “Casco Antiguo” or “Ciutat Vella,” both of which are Spanish translations for “Old Town.” Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 BC, and the Old Town still bears clear marks of their presence today. One of the most famous landmarks is Plaza de la Virgen, which used to be the site of the Roman forum. From the 8th to the 13th century, Valencia was under Muslim rule, and this period left a lasting influence on the city’s architecture and culture. One of the best-known examples is the Torres de Serranos, a set of imposing towers that were once part of the city’s defensive walls. After the Christian conquest of Valencia in 1238, the Old Town entered a period of growth and prosperity. This is when many of the city’s most famous landmarks were built, including Valencia Cathedral and the Lonja de la Seda (the Silk Exchange), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe.
