Friends! Stop crowding Chaka Salt Lake!! 😭 On this trip to Qinghai, I unexpectedly discovered Chaerhan Salt Lake—the largest salt lake in Asia and the second largest in the world, with an area equal to 56 Chaka Salt Lakes! Fewer people, stunning scenery, and no need to wait in line for the classic "dumpling" photo—this place is legendary‼️ 📍Location Golmud City, Qinghai Province, about 60 km from downtown. Just search for "Chaerhan Salt Lake Scenic Area" on your map. 🚗 How to get there? Self-drive: About 40 minutes from Golmud along National Highway G215. The road is in great condition. Carpool/charter: Around 100–150 yuan per person round trip from the city. Drivers all know the way. Group tours: Many Qinghai-Gansu loop tours stop here, but self-driving is recommended for independent travelers. 🎫 Tickets & transportation Ticket: 20 yuan (very reasonable!) Shuttle bus: 60 yuan (mandatory, since the entrance to the core scenic area is over 10 km away, and the views along the way are breathtaking!) Total cost: 80 yuan per person, more than half cheaper than Chaka Salt Lake! 🌈 Best time to visit Season: June–September (summer temperatures around 20℃, just right) Time of day: 4–7 PM (softest light, the salt lake turns emerald green, perfect for reflection photos) 📸 Photo tips (pay attention!) Outfit: Red or white long dress ✅ Avoid blue or green (they clash with the salt lake colors) Spot: Deep inside the park at "Wanzhang Salt Bridge" and "Salt Flower Viewing Platform"—few people and wide-open views Technique: Use your phone’s wide-angle lens and crouch low to capture the sky, salt lake, and yourself all at once Caution: The salt lake looks soft but is actually very hard. Don’t wear flip-flops (they hurt!) ⚠️ Reminders Wear sunglasses 🕶️: The salt lake reflects strong UV rays that can sting your eyes Bring sunscreen: The high altitude plus salt reflection can cause sunburn quickly Don’t drink too much water: There are very few restrooms in the park, and the conditions are questionable… Avoid splashing salt water on your clothes: When dry, it leaves white salt stains and makes clothes stiff 💡 Why do I strongly recommend it? Because this place is truly undeveloped! No awkward crowds like at Chaka where 50 people stand in front of one mirror spot. Here, you can run freely or even lie on the salt lake (the salt layer is thick and won’t collapse). Plus, it’s China’s most important potash fertilizer production base. You get to enjoy beautiful scenery while witnessing an industrial marvel—super meaningful! Go before it gets popular! When you return, remember to tag me in the comments so I can see your emerald green salt lake photos~✨

Sisters! When you go to Qinghai, don’t just focus on the salt lakes and Chaka‼️ This time I went all in, flooring it into the Hoh Xil no-man’s land— a world natural heritage site, one of China’s largest uninhabited areas, known as the “forbidden zone of life.” What happened? I cried😭 Not from fear, but moved to tears! 📍 Where is Hoh Xil? Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. About 200 km south from Golmud along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109). The core area is near the Sonam Dargye protection station. 🚗 How to get there? ⚠️ Important reminder: Hoh Xil is not a tourist attraction! No tickets are required, but you must respect nature. Self-drive: Golmud → Kunlun Pass → Budo Spring → Sonam Dargye protection station → Tuotuo River. The entire route is paved, but altitude rises from 2,800 m to 4,600 m, so be sure to prevent altitude sickness. Charter/shared ride: Local travel agencies in Golmud offer one- or two-day tours to Hoh Xil, priced at 800–1,500 CNY per person. Drivers know the roads and can act as guides. Don’t hike on your own: This is no joke. No signal, wild animals, extreme weather— even locals don’t dare. 📅 Best time: June–August (weather is relatively stable, Tibetan antelope calving season, you can see lambs running with their mothers) 📸 Highlights & photo tips 1️⃣ Tibetan antelope 🦌 Near Sonam Dargye protection station, easiest to spot between 5–7 PM. Remember: stay quiet, don’t get out to chase! Use a telephoto lens (phone cameras won’t cut it, renting a camera is recommended). Seeing their white rumps as they run is super heartwarming💖 2️⃣ Kunlun Pass 🏔️ At 4,767 m altitude, surrounded by endless snow-capped mountains and fluttering prayer flags. You can stop here to take photos, but it’s windy and cold, so wear a windbreaker. 3️⃣ Budo Spring 💧 A magical spring that never freezes. Water temperature stays near 0°C year-round but never freezes. The ice-blue spring water against the snowy background is stunning. 4️⃣ Hoh Xil snow mountains and wilderness The overwhelming vastness can’t be captured even one-thousandth by a phone. Use a wide-angle lens, crouch low, and frame the sky, road, and wilderness together with a caption like “No one is here, yet life thrives.” ⚠️ Survival guide (key points!) Altitude sickness: Take Rhodiola 2 days in advance, bring oxygen, avoid bathing and strenuous activity. Clothing: Down jacket + windproof outerwear. It can snow even in summer❄️ Food: Self-heating rice, chocolate, hot water. No convenience stores along the way. Toilets: None! Use a cloth for privacy in the wild... Phone signal: Basically none once you enter the mountains. Download offline maps in advance. Don’t litter: Every plastic bag could be mistaken for food by Tibetan antelopes and cause death. 💡 Why strongly recommend? Because this is not a tourist spot, it’s the last pure land on earth. When your eyes meet those of a Tibetan antelope, you’ll understand what “life” really means. No commercial noise, only wind, snow mountains, and freedom. It’s not for enjoyment, it’s for reverence. Before you go, watch the movie Hoh Xil to better understand the weight of this land. After you go, remember to share your story with me—I’ll be waiting in the comments✨

While Shanghai and Chongqing are sizzling at +38°C, Qinghai province is enjoying perfect summer weather around +20°C during the day and +5°C…+10°C at night. Dry air, bright sunshine, and zero humidity no wonder thousands of travelers are heading here for their summer getaway. Must-see attractions: 🔹 Qinghai Lake (青海湖) — China's largest saltwater lake. The water shimmers from turquoise to deep sapphire blue, with golden rapeseed flower fields blanketing the shores. Best photo spot: sunset. 🔹 Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Temple) — one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries of the Gelug school. Thousands of colorful prayer flags, golden pagodas, and the sound of prayer wheels create an atmosphere of pure serenity. 🔹 Qaidam Desert — an unexpected contrast to the lake. Sand dunes meet salt lakes, creating surreal landscapes you won't find anywhere else. 💡 What to know before you go: ⚠️ Altitude. Qinghai sits at 3000–4000 meters above sea level. Acclimatization is a must: take it easy on day one, drink plenty of water, and skip alcohol. 🧥 Clothing. Even in summer, pack a warm jacket — nighttime temperatures can drop to +5°C. 📆 Season. Girls! If you think Qinghai only has the sky mirror, you’re missing out big time! Right in Dachaidan lies a palette spilled by the gods—Emerald Lake! 🌊 The lake’s water is naturally Tiffany blue, with salt lakes scattered like emeralds, so clear you can see the white salt crystals at the bottom. The best part is fewer crowds and beautiful scenery—every shot looks like an “Iceland alternative” 📸! This detailed guide will walk you through unlocking this emerald secret spot. Don’t go too late or you’ll have to wait in line 😭 📍 Location: Dachaidan Town, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province About 400 km from Chaka Salt Lake. Self-driving or chartered car recommended. Navigate to “Dachaidan Emerald Lake.” It’s convenient from Golmud Airport or Dunhuang, with scenic views of the U-shaped road and water yardang formations along the way 🚗 ⏰ Best time: mid-June to late September (sunny days!) Emerald Lake’s beauty depends on sunlight! On cloudy days, the water looks dull. Only under bright sun does the lake show its dreamy blue-green color. The light is softest from 4 to 7 PM, perfect for capturing golden reflections on the water ✨ 🎫 Tickets & transportation Tickets: 60 CNY in peak season (tentative this year), round-trip small train 60 CNY. It’s best to buy a ticket and ride in, then walk out (5 km one way, about 1 hour). You’ll see salt lakes of different colors along the way. Internal transport: The small train stops at 4 stations. The first is the largest and bluest lake. The last has the fewest people and clearest water, ideal for reflection shots. 📸 Must-do spots: 4 photo locations 1️⃣ Largest lake (station 1): The bluest and biggest lake, like a huge sapphire. Stand on the white salt shore and shoot from a low angle for perfect human and reflection harmony. 2️⃣ Heart-shaped lake (near station 2): Only visible fully by drone or from a high vantage point. A must-visit for couples! 💕 3️⃣ Tiffany blue lake (station 3): The water is light blue-green, like emerald. Wear a white dress and stand in the water up to your ankles for the “standing on emerald” effect. 4️⃣ Sky mirror twin (station 4): Shallow and calm water with reflections as clear as Chaka Salt Lake, but fewer people! Hold your phone close to the water for stunning shots without filters. 👗 Outfit guide Colors: white / light blue / pale yellow! Avoid dark colors that spoil the fresh look. Shoes: wear sandals or go barefoot! Bring waterproof shoes (or rent shoe covers for 10 CNY). Salt crystals sting your feet but it’s worth it for the photos 😆 Accessories: sunglasses + wide-brim hat (to block glare) + red shawl (great for close-up shots) ⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid (learned the hard way) Don’t step on salt caves! There may be hidden salt caves (deep pits) under the lake. Don’t go too deep. Safety first! Bring a drone! Only aerial shots capture the full view and color layers of Emerald Lake. Great value. Sun protection, sun protection, sun protection! The high-altitude UV is strong. You can get sunburned in 30 minutes with no shade. Don’t drink the lake water! It looks clear but is extremely salty. Avoid touching your eyes after contact. Arrive before 10 AM! After noon, tour groups arrive and it gets crowded. You’ll have to queue for the best spots. 🍜 Food and drink nearby Dachaidan’s “Yibula specialty clay pot”: lamb clay pot (tender lamb, sticky potatoes), about 70 CNY per person, served with Qinghai old yogurt. Bring your own snacks: no restaurants inside the park (only water for sale). Remember to bring self-heating rice or snacks. When you see that pure Tiffany blue, you’ll instantly forget all the travel fatigue. The sunlight sparkles on the lake like scattered diamonds, and you standing there become part of the painting 🖼️ Some say Emerald Lake is “the earth’s tears,” but I think it’s “a treasure box hidden by heaven” 💎. Before it gets too popular and crowded, go now! Guess why Emerald Lake’s water is Tiffany blue? Share your answer in the comments for a chance to win a “Qinghai travel map” 🎁

Only after completing the full Qinghai-Gansu loop will you realize that instead of squeezing into the crowded Chaka Salt Lake, it’s better to head straight to Chaerhan. Here, the lake naturally glows with a soft apple green. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, you can capture clear, stunning shots without relying on strong light filters. The entire scenic area has a clear route plan, with a continuous walkway running through the core salt fields, so you don’t waste energy backtracking. The salt lake and Gobi have no shade, and long hikes can cause severe sun exposure. You don’t need to check in at every viewpoint. Just focus on three hidden spots to fill your entire travel photo album. Tested and organized with detailed, easy-to-follow tips. 📍Complete guide for entering and traveling Location: Chaerhan Salt Lake Visitor Center, Golmud, Qinghai Province Fees: Peak season pass is 100 yuan, including round-trip shuttle bus; students and seniors over 60 get half-price tickets. Visitors with Shaoxing ID can enter free but must buy the sightseeing bus ticket. Entry transport: Private cars can only park in the external lot. Visitors take the official shuttle bus about 30 minutes to the core salt fields. After getting off, choose to walk around the lake for an immersive experience or pay 15 yuan for a one-way sightseeing electric cart to save energy. Opening hours: Peak season (Apr–Oct) 8:00 AM–8:00 PM; off-season (Nov–Mar) 8:30 AM–6:30 PM Altitude 2,670 meters. After arrival, slow your pace to avoid mild altitude sickness. Plan 3–4 hours for the best experience. 🌤Seasonal and time-of-day photo guide Best months to visit: May–Oct May and June have fewer visitors and a comfortable experience, but some salt pools have low water levels. July and August bring abundant rain, making the lake full and emerald green, but summer tour groups increase, so popular spots require waiting. September and October see fewer crowds, with fully crystallized salt flowers, though the surrounding Gobi grasslands turn yellow. Daily golden photo windows: 9:00–11:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM These times offer soft light, making skin tones even and avoiding the harsh midday sun from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Midday light causes glare on the lake and coincides with large tour groups, making photos crowded. 📸Three hidden photo spots to avoid crowds and enjoy the salt lake 1. Sightseeing bus end point rest area The first rest stop after getting off has a drink shop where you can buy the signature green apple salt lake drink for about 25 yuan. The green drink matches the lake’s color perfectly, creating a great atmosphere. Nearby are Instagrammable swings, beach chairs, and a giant Ferris wheel installation, perfect for relaxed vacation-style photos. 2. West side secluded salt pool Walk straight from the bus stop to the first fork, then head west. This area rarely has visitors, so you can have the entire jade salt pool to yourself. The pure white salt flats paired with gradient green water create a spacious, cool, and sophisticated look for portraits without waiting in line. 3. Lotus salt pool at Bishui Yaotai The iconic lotus-shaped brine lake in the park. Drone shots capture the full lotus outline, while ground-level photos show rich, soft water layers with a texture similar to Cotton Castle. This unique feature stands out on the entire route. Other viewpoints have very similar scenery and can be passed by without detours. ⚠️Tested tips to avoid pitfalls—must read before traveling 1. The once-popular long salt road is now closed, with staff patrolling the area. Do not climb over fences to get close. 2. The once-famous water piano installation has been removed. No need to detour looking for it to avoid wasted trips. 3. If you want to reach the shallow water’s edge for photos, wear waterproof shoes. Regular sneakers easily get soaked by the brine, while waterproof boots let you freely access secluded lakeside spots. 4. The Gobi lake area has no shade and very strong UV rays. Sunscreen hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential. At night, remember to apply hydrating masks to repair sun-damaged skin.

📍Qarhan Salt Lake, Golmud, Qinghai Seriously, the Qarhan Salt Lake is truly stunning! 🤩 It's China's largest and the world's second-largest salt lake, covering 5,856 square kilometers—as big as 56 Chaka Salt Lakes. The lake water is a gradient of apple green and Tiffany blue, with the Kunlun Snow Mountains silently standing guard in the distance, and a salty taste in the wind. Qarhan Salt Lake is an unmissable treasure stop on the Qinghai-Gansu loop—no crowds, and it comes with its own blue-green gradient filter. It's about a 1-hour drive from Golmud city. The scenic bus takes about 20–30 minutes from the visitor center to the core area. Here's a 1-day itinerary for you 🗺️ In the morning, depart from Golmud city. Arrive at Qarhan Salt Lake Visitor Center in about 1 hour. After purchasing tickets, take the scenic bus into the core area (about 20–30 minutes). First, walk across the Wan Zhang Salt Bridge—a 32-kilometer road paved purely with salt, with no piers or guardrails, where the salt crust is as hard as cement. Next, see the Qian Dao Salt Flowers—salt crystals that grow into coral and mushroom shapes, resembling white archipelagos scattered in the emerald lake water. Have a simple lunch in the core area (it's recommended to bring your own dry food, as no food is sold in the scenic area). In the afternoon, photograph the Emerald Salt Fields and the Sky Mirror—the lake water displays layers of emerald green, pink, and deep blue due to minerals, and when there's no wind, the lake surface is like a mirror. Return to Golmud city in the evening. 📸 Photo tips Best time: 2–5 PM, when the light is soft and the lake colors are most saturated Outfit suggestions: White or light-colored long dresses, which perfectly match the salt white and lake green Aerial photography is even more stunning; you can register to fly at the visitor center The lake surface has extremely strong reflections, so sunglasses + high-SPF sunscreen are essential Useful information Tickets are about CNY 100 (including the sightseeing bus), and taking the sightseeing bus is a must No food is sold in the core area; bring your own dry food and water The brine is corrosive, so it's not recommended to wade or go barefoot June–September is the best season, with emerald green lake water and stunning reflections The images in this article are for illustrative purposes; the actual scenery prevails.

July in Qinghai is so refreshing that even the wind carries the scent of barley wine! The aftertaste is so strong that when I got home and made milk tea, it still left milk residue fragments😭✨ Who understands! Escaping the sweltering heat of the inland summer in July, traveling the Qinghai-Gansu route, a cool 18℃ breeze blows, jingles the prayer bells, and slips into your collar. Salt lakes, grasslands, and yardang formations come together like a half-finished wind-eroded blue painting. A week after returning, I open the window just to feel the salty breeze. My mind is full of the bright yellow waves of rapeseed flowers in Menyuan stretching to the clouds! · ----- 🧂1. Chaerhan salt lake’s unspoiled mirror-viewing spot The turquoise salt lake stretches to the horizon. Salt crystals pile up like milky white coral on the water’s surface. When the wind sweeps across the lake, even the wave marks sparkle. In the distance, white chimneys of the potash factory emit light smoke. The soles of your shoes pick up fine salty crystals on the salt road. 👉Tip: Go early at 7 AM when there are no tourists and reflections are weakest. Wear a pure white dress and step on the shallow salt layer. The mirror-like reflection is 10 times quieter than Chaka! 🌼2. Menyuan Qingshizui rapeseed flower sea aerial spot A continuous stretch of bright yellow rapeseed flowers reaches the foot of snow-capped mountains. In the distance, the Gangshika snow peak shows its white tip. Beekeepers set up honey buckets by the flower fields. Little bees buzz around the flower spikes. The wind carries the rapeseed fragrance into your collar. 👉Tip: Arrive at 6 AM golden hour and wait at the viewing platform. Frame the yellow flowers and snow mountains in your shot for a striking color contrast that instantly stands out! 🌿3. Qilian mountain grassland Erbogou herder spot Waist-high grasslands stretch to the clouds. A Tibetan woman leads a white yak that nuzzles your palm. Herds sway their tails as they move through the grass waves. Colorful prayer flags flutter loudly in the mountain wind. Wild little blue flowers peek through the grass leaves at your feet. 👉Tip: Rent Tibetan clothes and ride a slow horse around this off-the-beaten-path pasture. Capture shots of the horse stepping on wildflowers. No one competes for this spot! 🛤️4. G315 U-shaped highway yardang section roadside spot Huge earth-colored yardangs pile up on both sides of the desert. The highway dips sharply into a U shape following the terrain. Heavy trucks drag gray streaks as they pass slowly. The blue sky over the barren cliffs stretches to the desert edge. The wind sweeps sand grains past your ears. 👉Tip: Avoid noon traffic and wait 10 minutes to shoot empty shots. Shoot the highway from a low angle looking up at the sky. The wild, cool vibe is instantly epic! 🏞️5. Guide Yellow River Qing wetland park shallow beach The clear emerald Yellow River flows over a pebble beach. Reeds sway white fluff brushing the water’s surface. Local elders squat on the bank casting fishing rods for Yellow River fish. The river water is cool, just above the ankles. The mist carried by the wind softens your face. 👉Tip: Shoot one hour after rain to capture water reflecting the Danxia landform. The yellow Danxia mountains contrast uniquely with the blue-green water—an exclusive visual treat! 🪨6. Water yardang star moon bay uninhabited spot Earth-colored yardang islands poke out of the blue-green lake. The sunset dyes the stones a honey-orange. Wild water birds flap and dive into the lake catching small fish. The wind sweeps the lake surface with cool ripples. Even the falling stars seem soaked in salty mist. 👉Tip: Set up a small light rig at night to shoot the Milky Way over the yardang. The dark sci-fi vibe will blow up your social feed! · ----- 🍜 must-try highlights ▪️Hardcore experience: hand-pulled lamb to tear and bite! Tender and juicy with no gamey taste. Dip in pepper salt and bite down, warming you with a comfortable thin sweat ▪️Local favorite: Qinghai native hot pot in an alley, loaded with lamb, vermicelli, and frozen tofu. Eat it with barley cakes until you’re full ▪️Qinghai exclusive: icy sweet yak yogurt sprinkled with fried rice and honey. The sourness instantly cools away the summer heat! · ----- ✅ hard-earned tips 1. July desert temperature swings 20℃ day to night. Bring a thick windbreaker. At sunset shooting yardang, the cold made my arms goosebump and stiffen 2. Salt crystals on the salt lake are highly abrasive and corrosive to shoes. Wear fully enclosed water shoes. Open-toe shoes will peel badly after walking, very embarrassing 3. Don’t tease Tibetan herders’ dogs on the grassland. Ask the owner before feeding. If you get too close, they’ll jump on you and scare you half to death 4. Don’t stand in the middle of the U-shaped highway to shoot trucks’ blind spots. Trucks move fast and can’t stop quickly. It’s dangerous and you won’t have time to cry! July in Qinghai gathers the purest blue of the salt lake and the wildest grassland winds. Before leaving, I stuffed half a jar of Chaerhan salt crystals into my backpack. Now when I take it out and smell it, I can still catch the scent of the desert mixed with rapeseed breeze🥹!

When traveling to the northwest, Chaka Salt Lake and Chaerhan Salt Lake are two must-see top attractions! ✨ Many friends 👯 are torn about which to choose, so today we’ll break down these two "mirrors of the sky" clearly! 👇 🏞️ Chaka Salt Lake · Location: Wulan County, Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province · Highlights: The famous "mirror of the sky," with super clear reflections when the water is calm, perfect for photos! 📸 · Best for: Those who want beautiful photos and have plenty of time · Tip: The best time to shoot is before 10 AM and after 5 PM when the water is calmer~ 🌊 Chaerhan Salt Lake · Location: Golmud City, Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province · Highlights: China’s largest salt lake, with a more emerald green tone, fewer people, beautiful scenery, and great for photos! 📱 · Best for: Travelers seeking a less crowded, unique experience · Tip: The lake water turns a dreamy Tiffany blue under sunlight, so it’s best to visit on a sunny day! ☀️ 💡 My advice: 1️⃣ If you have enough time, visit both to experience two completely different salt lake landscapes~ 2️⃣ For stunning reflection photos, choose Chaka first; for a unique, less crowded spot, pick Chaerhan! 3️⃣ If you have a drone, definitely fly it—the bird’s-eye view is amazing!! 🚁 PS: Don’t forget sunglasses 🕶️ and sunscreen, as the salt lakes reflect strong UV rays!

#souvenirguide Driving the Qingzang Highway, you learn quickly that rest stops aren’t just for bathrooms—they’re social hubs. One particular bench near a windswept pull-off became my favorite “souvenir shop.” No trinkets, just thermoses and stories. I pulled over to stretch my legs and sat on a weathered bench. Within minutes, an older couple from Golmud joined me. The man unscrewed a battered thermos and poured a cup of dark, salty butter tea. He offered it without a word. I hesitated, then accepted. It was rich, smoky, and deeply warming—exactly what the plateau demands. We didn’t share a common language, but we shared three sips, a nod, and a mutual appreciation for the view: endless brown hills under a sky so blue it hurt. Later, I realized I hadn’t bought a single thing that day. Yet I left with something better: the memory of that shared silence and the taste of tea brewed for the road. I now keep a mental note of “thermos moments” whenever I travel—times when a stranger’s drink became a bridge. Question for the group: have you ever received food or drink from a stranger while traveling? Did it feel generous, awkward, or both? And do you think shared meals (or sips) count as souvenirs? I’d argue they’re the most portable kind. Would love to hear your stories of roadside generosity.

#souvenirguide Golmud’s Populus euphratica forest is a study in resilience—twisted, gnarled trees that look like they’ve been sculpted by centuries of wind and drought. I wanted a souvenir, so I searched for a fallen twig to take home. Every branch I picked up felt… wrong. They were either too brittle, too perfect, or still clinging to life despite being on the ground. Then an old herder appeared, leading a small herd of sheep. He watched me poking at branches and shook his head. “These trees are older than your country,” he said in rough Mandarin. “You don’t take them. You listen.” So I sat under the most contorted tree I could find, its trunk spiraling like a frozen tornado. I closed my eyes and listened to the wind whistle through the gaps in the bark. It sounded like a low hum, part complaint, part lullaby. My souvenir became a rubbing: I placed a piece of paper against the bark and shaded it with charcoal, capturing the deep grooves and knots. Now it hangs on my wall—a textured map of survival. The herder’s words stayed with me: “The tree stays. The story moves.” Here’s a philosophical one: can a souvenir be something you create froma place without removing anything physical? Have you ever been stopped—by a person, a sign, or a gut feeling—from taking a natural souvenir? And if you’ve walked this forest, did you notice how the trees seem to lean away from the prevailing wind, as if trying to shield themselves? I named mine “Old Resister.”

Fly from Shanghai to Xining in 3 hours. The moment you step out of the plane, a 22°C breeze blows in from the Qilian Mountains—completely different from Shanghai’s sticky heat. This summer, Qinghai once again ranks among the popular summer cooling destinations in Trip.com’s “2026 Summer Travel New Trends” report. While southern cities continue to experience high temperatures, Qinghai attracts visitors nationwide with its cool climate and ecological resources. In July, starting from Xining, the stunning scenery along the way is breathtaking. Keep this itinerary handy 🗺️ Day 1: Xining → Qinghai Lake (West Loop Road) Depart from Xining in the morning, take a chartered car or drive to Qinghai Lake (about 2.5 hours). The entrance fee is around 90 RMB, and it’s recommended to reserve most of the day. Take the West Loop Road—from Heimahe to Gangcha County—where there are fewer cars and beautiful views, with Qinghai Lake unfolding on the right side. In July, the rapeseed flowers are in full bloom, creating a golden sea of flowers alongside the blue lake—a classic Qinghai Lake scene. Wait for sunset on the west shore, where the lake turns golden and the snowy mountain outlines are clear in the distance. Overnight in Heimahe or Gangcha County. Day 2: Chaka Salt Lake + Sky No.1 Head to Chaka Salt Lake in the morning (about 2 hours), entrance plus small train ticket about 110 RMB. The “Mirror of the Sky” name is well deserved—the lake surface is like a mirror, perfectly reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, and distant mountains. It’s recommended to take the small train to the lake’s center, where there are fewer people and clearer reflections. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Sky No.1 scenic area, which is less crowded and also great for photos of the salt lake. Overnight in Chaka Town or return to Xining. Day 3: Qilian Grassland + Amindongso Depart from Xining in the morning to Qilian County (about 3 hours). In July, Qilian spreads out a green ecological canvas. Pass through Qilian Grassland, one of China’s six most beautiful grasslands, where green meadows stretch to the horizon at the foot of the Qilian Mountains. In the afternoon, visit Amindongso Scenic Area (entrance about 60 RMB), featuring forest sea views, natural pastures, and lush green grasslands in a harmonious layout. Overnight in Qilian County or return. ⏰ If you have more time, consider adding: Jade Lake (Dachaidan, a smaller, more niche green salt lake than Chaka) Water Yadan (Wusute, a unique water Yadan landform) Menyuan Hundred-Mile Rapeseed Flower Sea (in full bloom in July) 🍴 Don’t miss these local foods Qinghai’s cuisine carries the flavor of the plateau. Hand-grabbed lamb is a must-try, simply boiled in water and delicious, dipped in pepper and salt, with no gamey or fishy taste. Qinghai’s old yogurt is thick, sweet and sour, and refreshing when eaten with barley flour. Niangpi (fermented cold noodles) is a summer staple in Qinghai, sour, spicy, and refreshing. Sweet fermented barley is a local specialty dessert, sweet and thirst-quenching. Moji Street in Xining is a food hub where you can find niangpi, hand-grabbed lamb, and yogurt. 🏠 Where to stay Hotels in downtown Xining cost 300-600 RMB/night, with many options and convenient transportation. Guesthouses around Qinghai Lake cost 200-400 RMB/night, with lake views from the window but relatively simple conditions. Hotels in Chaka Town cost 200-400 RMB/night, close to the salt lake. July is peak season in Qinghai, so book at least a week in advance. ⚠️ A few reminders Qinghai is at high altitude (Xining 2200m, Qinghai Lake 3200m), take it slow to avoid altitude sickness Large temperature differences between day and night; short sleeves during the day, but bring a windbreaker or light down jacket for the evening Sun protection! Sun protection! Sun protection! The plateau UV rays are very strong Qinghai Lake loop road is about 360 km; self-driving or chartered cars are the most flexible July is Qinghai’s most beautiful and busiest season; book hotels and vehicles in advance Photos in the article are for artistic reference only; actual scenery may vary.

After spending four days in Qinghai, I covered three lakes + two mountains + an alien base 😎 Who understands, family! I used my annual leave to rush to Qinghai, but after three days and three nights, I was completely overwhelmed—this isn’t Qinghai, it’s clearly God’s spilled palette + an alien base left behind! 🎨 Day 1: Depart from Xining, chasing the footsteps of Princess Wencheng First stop: Riyue Mountain. Standing among the prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the guide said Princess Wencheng once looked back at Chang’an from here. I looked back too—well, it was full of people, no royal aura for me, but I made sure my photo game was on point! In the afternoon, I rushed to Chaka Salt Lake. Wearing a bright-colored long dress, standing in the middle of the lake, the sky reflected beneath my feet, and it felt like I was dancing ballet on clouds 🩰. Friendly reminder: sunglasses must be glued to your face, or the lake’s glare will send you flying 😎. At night, stayed in Delingha, lying in bed flipping through photos until 2 a.m.—the city in Haizi’s poems, but I was scrolling on my phone, sorry poet 🤦‍♀️! Day 2: Double salt lake assault, my eyes couldn’t take it! From Delingha, I headed to Qarhan Salt Lake—the largest salt lake in China, 56 times bigger than Chaka! The lake water is apple green 🍏, I felt like I was stepping on a giant matcha mille crepe cake! Salt crystals on the shore formed all kinds of strange shapes, like coral, snowflakes, or Morse code left by aliens 👽. So few tourists I could have the whole lake to myself. I sat on the salt beach and spaced out for ten minutes: nature really knows how to color match! In the afternoon, I went to Dacaidan Emerald Lake, which I crown as “the scene where God’s palette was spilled”—Tiffany blue, emerald green, amber yellow, rose pink 💎, all embedded in the ground like scattered gems. Wearing a white dress and standing by the lake, the reflection was crystal clear. Day 3: Devil City + Water Fleet + Roller Coaster Road, three visual bombshells in one day Nanbaxian Yadan Devil City—the name comes from eight female geologists who sacrificed their lives. As soon as I entered, I was speechless! Wind-eroded earth mounds one after another, howling with the wind, truly the heart of Devil City 👹. Took a photo of my back standing on top of a mound. Next, Wusute Water Yadan—family, this is the world’s earliest water Yadan landscape! Suddenly a patch of blue-green lake appears in the desert, with Yadan mounds standing on the water like a mighty fleet setting sail. Locals call it the “Western Sea Fleet,” the vibe is on point 🚢! The wind howled, water birds flew overhead, and my mind played the Interstellar soundtrack. Note: lots of mosquitoes. Along the way, we drove past the U-shaped road, the big slope was insanely steep, and when the driver hit the gas, I felt like I was on a roller coaster 🎢! Stayed in Delingha at night, so comfortable I wanted to give the product manager a drumstick 🍗! Day 4: Exclusive secret spots triple hit, my social feed exploded with questions! The highlight! Keluoke Town “Tree of Life” filming location—this is the core filming site of the TV drama “Tree of Life,” transformed from the old Delingha farm established in 1958. When the drone rose, I got goosebumps—the earth was carved into huge tree-shaped patterns 🌳, branches spreading dozens of meters like a divine signature! Next, Tianjun Stone Forest—Qinghai’s version of Stonehenge! Formed about 350 million years ago in the Carboniferous period, a patch of oddly shaped stone peaks suddenly appears on the grassland, like ancient giants’ building blocks 🧱. Climbed the stones for a photo with prayer flags, the wind blowing past my ears made me want to sing! In the afternoon, Qinghai Lake Cliff (Sacred Spring Bay)—the reddish-brown rock wall plunges straight into the lake. Standing on the cliff viewing platform, looking up, the whole lake of blue waves spread before my eyes. The last stop was Gangcha Huangyu Homeland, where from June to August you can see the amazing sight of “half river clear water, half river fish”—Huangyu fish swimming upstream, densely packed in the river 🐟, so full of life I wanted to applaud! Returned to Xining around 8:30 p.m., four days and three nights, my eyes were full, my phone memory was full, my legs were sore, and my heart was full. 💡Why dare to book with eyes closed? They are a local Qinghai operator with over 20 years of experience, vice president unit of the Tourism Association, not a “guerrilla”! The whole trip uses their own official fleet, drivers are licensed, and each seat is insured with high coverage—safety is more cared for than by your own mom. Zero shopping, zero tricks, no store visits or delays, all time reserved for scenery. No group sharing or subcontracting, after-sales directly connected to management, if you get scammed, I lose! This route is also exclusively designed—regular tours don’t even go to the “Tree of Life” or “Qinghai Lake Cliff,” but we take you there! Niche secret spots + classic landmarks all packed 📦. Finally, the scenery is “alien-level” stunning, the experience is “mom-level” reliable, and the niche is “exclusive-level” rare. I've traveled to so many places, thinking I'd seen enough scenery. It wasn't until I stepped onto the salt crust of Qarhan Salt Lake that I realized what it meant to have 'lived in vain.' 🌿 💚 How stunning is this lake? Located in Golmud, Qinghai, in the heart of the Qaidam Basin. It's China's largest and the world's second-largest salt lake, spanning 5,856 square kilometers—the size of 56 Chaka Salt Lakes. The lake water transitions from green apple to Tiffany blue. In the distance, the Kunlun Mountains stand silently guarding it. The wind carries a salty scent. The four words 'fairyland on Earth' find their true form here. ✨ Highlight Attractions (one by one) 🌉 Ten Thousand-Foot Salt Bridge · A Road Floating on Salt 32 kilometers long. Paved purely with salt, no piers, no guardrails. The salt crust is as hard as cement, and trucks drive on it normally. Driving on it feels like floating in a white ocean. Take a low-angle shot, and the road stretches straight to the horizon. 💎 Thousand Island Salt Flowers · Nature's Sculpture Exhibition Salt crystals grow into shapes resembling coral, mushrooms, and pagodas. They are crystal clear and spread across the lake surface. Up close, the patterns look like works of art. From afar, they resemble white archipelagos scattered in the emerald lake water. 🎨 Emerald Salt Fields · God's Overturned Palette The lake water displays layers of emerald green, pink, and deep blue due to minerals. It's like scattered jewels. No filter is needed for photos. 🪞 Jade Pool on Azure Water · Excellent Spot for Portraits A white salt boardwalk in the middle of the lake. Any photo taken here turns into a pure and healing masterpiece. 🪞 Sky Mirror · When there's no wind When there's no wind, the lake surface is like a mirror. Clouds and snow-capped mountains are reflected in the water. One of the highlights of our China trip wasn’t a destination at all — it was the journey itself. The famous Qinghai–Tibet Railway connects Xining and Lhasa across some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in the world. If you’re planning a trip to Tibet, I highly recommend considering the train instead of flying. 📍 Route: Xining → Lhasa 🚆 My train: Z8991 ⏱ Travel time: approximately 20 hours 🏔 Highest elevation: over 5,000 m (16,400 ft) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎟️ WHERE TO BUY TICKETS There are three main options: ✔ Through your Tibet tour operator (often the easiest option for foreign travelers) ✔ Trip.com ✔ The official Chinese railway booking system (12306) I booked my Tibet permit through a local Tibet agency and arranged the train ticket at the same time, which made the process much easier. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚆 CURRENT XINING → LHASA TRAIN OPTIONS ⚠️ Important: Train schedules change regularly and additional trains may be added or removed depending on the season. Always verify the latest timetable before booking. At the time of writing (June 2026), the following direct trains were available: 🚆 Z323 — 11:55 → 07:24 (+1) 🚆 Z8981 — 12:50 → 10:25 (+1) 🚆 Z21 — 15:27 → 11:47 (+1) 🚆 Z265 — 18:19 → 14:53 (+1) 🚆 Z165 — 19:28 → 15:36 (+1) 🚆 Z8991 — 22:00 → 18:26 (+1) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⭐ WHICH TRAIN SHOULD YOU CHOOSE? If sightseeing is your priority, I would personally recommend: 🥇 Z8991 (22:00 departure) 🥈 Z165 (19:28 departure) 🥉 Z265 (18:19 departure) Why? Because later departures allow you to sleep through the night and wake up directly on the Tibetan Plateau, right when the scenery becomes extraordinary. Earlier departures are still great, but you’ll spend more daytime hours before reaching the most dramatic landscapes. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📸 WHAT YOU’LL SEE FROM THE WINDOW 🌙 Night After leaving Xining, most travelers settle into their sleepers and get some rest. Don’t worry about missing anything — the best scenery comes after sunrise. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌅 Sunrise on the Plateau This is when the journey becomes unforgettable. You’ll wake up to: · endless grasslands · snow-capped mountains · grazing yaks · Tibetan villages · vast open landscapes that seem to stretch forever Many passengers spend the rest of the journey glued to the window. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏔 TANGGULA PASS One of the most famous sections of the route. The railway climbs above 5,000 meters, making this the highest railway journey in the world. The landscape here feels almost otherworldly. Expect dramatic mountain scenery, wide valleys, and views unlike anywhere else in China. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💙 TSO NA LAKE One of the most beautiful highlights of the entire railway. For long stretches, the train runs alongside the lake. Depending on weather and season, the water can appear: · turquoise · deep blue · silver · partially frozen It’s one of the most photographed sections of the journey. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐂 WILDLIFE SPOTTING The train crosses several protected regions of the Tibetan Plateau. Keep your eyes open for: · yaks · Tibetan sheep · wild birds · kiang (wild Tibetan donkeys) · Tibetan antelope (if you’re lucky) This is one of the few train journeys in the world where wildlife viewing is part of the experience. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🛏️ HARD SLEEPER OR SOFT SLEEPER? I traveled in Hard Sleeper. Honestly, for a one-night journey, I found it completely comfortable. ✔ more affordable ✔ authentic experience ✔ perfectly adequate for sleeping Soft Sleeper offers more privacy and space but usually costs significantly more and often sells out first. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📱 TIPS FOR THE JOURNEY ✔ Charge all devices before boarding ✔ Bring a power bank ✔ Keep your camera ready after sunrise ✔ Clean the window before the scenic sections begin ✔ Download offline maps and entertainment ✔ Don’t spend the morning scrolling on your phone — the views change constantly ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⭐ FINAL THOUGHTS I’ve traveled to more than 80 countries, and the Xining–Lhasa railway remains one of the most memorable train journeys I’ve ever taken. The train isn’t simply a way to get to Tibet. It’s one of the highlights of Tibet itself. If you have the time, I genuinely recommend choosing the train over a flight and experiencing the Tibetan Plateau the way it was meant to be seen — slowly, from the window of the world’s highest railway. Follow along — this is just the plan… We start April 18 from Guatemala → Los Angeles → China 🇨🇳 Beijing → Shanghai → Zhangjiajie → Xi’an → Lhasa — and this is only the beginning of our Asia journey across 15 countries ✈️ Stay close — I’ll be sharing what it’s really like every step of the way. Real experiences. Real mistakes. Real discoveries. #travel2026 #travel #tibet #tibettrain #lhasa #qinghaitibetrailway #traintravel #travelchina #chinatravel #tibettravel #tripcomcreator #railwayjourney #roofoftheworld #overlandtravel #china

Summer in the Northwest is the most atmospheric season of the year✨ Clear and transparent lakes, lush green grasslands, and vast fields of blooming rapeseed flowers create a healing landscape all along the way. No need to spend time flipping through various guides—just follow this complete itinerary to fully enjoy the Northwest loop! 🌡️ July-August Northwest Weather & Dressing Guide The Northwest has a unique "four seasons in one day" climate, with significant temperature differences between day and night, generally ranging from 10-32°C. Qinghai feels cool and comfortable overall, while Gansu areas like Dunhuang and Zhangye tend to be warmer. The high-altitude UV radiation is very strong, so sun protection is essential. ✅ Dressing Reference: Onion Layering Method Base layer: Short sleeves, tank tops, and thin long sleeves are all suitable, with styles that are fresh and versatile, perfect for all kinds of scenic photos Middle layer: Sun-protective clothing or thin cardigans can block sunlight and shield against mountain breezes Outer layer: Just bring a windbreaker; mornings, evenings, lakesides, and mountain passes can be chilly, so warmth is key Bottoms: Everyday versatile long pants or midi skirts that protect against mosquitoes and sun, suitable for all stops along the route Photo-friendly colors: White, red, and light yellow match well with salt lakes, grasslands, and Danxia landforms, making it easy to capture atmospheric shots ✈️ Transportation Options to the Northwest ▪️ Airplane: Choose direct flights to Xining Caojiapu Airport for time-saving and hassle-free travel, ideal for short trips and those who prefer easy travel ▪️ High-speed train: Many places have direct trains to Xining Station, offering great cost performance, convenient luggage handling, and a comfortable travel experience ▪️ Regular train: Budget-friendly option for those with ample time who want to slowly enjoy the Gobi scenery along the way Peak season is the high travel period for the Northwest, so flights, train tickets, and hotels along the route are quite tight. It’s recommended to plan and book in advance to ensure smooth travel. 🗺️ Complete 8-Day Northwest Itinerary DAY1. For salt lake visits, bring your own transparent shoe covers. Rental covers at scenic spots often leak or are unhygienic, so bringing your own is cleaner and more convenient. 2. Emphasize strong sun protection throughout the trip. Sunglasses, sun hats, face shields, and sunscreen are all necessary due to the intense high-altitude UV rays, which can damage skin quickly with short exposure. 3. Distances between Northwest loop attractions are long, and travel times are lengthy. Prepare snacks, drinking water, and items to ease travel discomfort in advance. 4. When visiting Mogao Caves, prioritize booking Class A tickets, which include video viewing and real cave visits for a more complete and rich experience. 5. Slow down your pace in high-altitude areas to avoid intense physical exertion. Drink plenty of water daily to reduce discomfort. Salt crystals hurt your feet, so wear waterproof, non-slip shoe covers 👢. 4️⃣ Mogao Caves tickets are very hard to get; you must book early on the official website with real-name registration, possibly 30 days in advance during peak season! 5️⃣ Many places in Northwest China support mobile payments, so no need to carry large amounts of cash that can be lost. · ---
