There are places so beautiful they seem like they were painted 🏝️ Sandy Island, a tiny uninhabited island near Carriacou, Grenada, is exactly that for me. Imagine: white sand, clear turquoise water, palm trees, the sound of waves... And no cars, roads, or hotels. Just nature. The island itself is very small—you can walk across it in just a few minutes. But that's precisely its charm. You don't feel like rushing here. You just want to sit on the sand, look at the sea, and realize that sometimes you need very little to be happy. You can get here by small boat from Carriacou Island (or, more precisely, from Paradise Beach). The ride takes only a few minutes, but it feels like you've entered another world. The standard price for a roundtrip is 40 Caribbean dollars, or about 1,100 rubles. The water around Sandy Island is so clear that even without special equipment, you can see fish right off the shore. And if you grab a mask, you'll discover a veritable mini-coral reef teeming with vibrant tropical inhabitants. Interestingly, this island is very vulnerable. During Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, Sandy Island was almost completely submerged. Many feared the island would disappear forever. But nature gradually restored the sandbar, and today it once again delights travelers with its beauty. Standing here, it's hard to believe such places actually exist. It feels like you've stepped into a Bounty ad. But no—it's a very real place, and I was lucky enough to see it with my own eyes. Annandale Falls is arguably the most accessible and one of the most famous waterfalls in Grenada. While many of the island's other waterfalls require a jungle trek, you can practically drive right up to Annandale. Annandale Falls is located just a few kilometers from the island's capital, St. George's. The waterfall is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation: palms, ferns, bamboo, and vibrant flowers. The water cascades from a height of about 10 meters into a natural pool framed by rocks and dense greenery. Because of this, the spot looks straight out of an adventure movie set. Can you swim here? Absolutely. Swimming is permitted in the pool beneath the falls, and many tourists gladly take a refreshing dip in the cool water after their stroll. The waterfall takes its name from the historic Annandale Estate, which existed here back in the colonial era. Like many parts of Grenada, this area was once involved in growing sugarcane and spices. Annandale Falls is a great option for anyone who: · doesn't want to hike several kilometers through the jungle; · is traveling with kids; · wants to combine a nature experience with a comfortable walk; · loves snapping gorgeous photos against a waterfall backdrop. Getting There - We took our personal cars to get to these places. Attractions - We stopped at a beautiful eucalyptus rainbow tree , Lake Antoine, Grand Etang Lake, Levera Beach and Welcome Rock. The 1 Hotel truly surpassed expectations. My family and I had a fantastic time. The hotel is stunningly beautiful and perfectly located, just steps away from Green Park tube station. Upon arrival, the desk clerk (evening shift, likely from Ukraine) was incredibly accommodating, even arranging for our rooms to be closer together. I saw her multiple times in the evenings, always with a warm smile. Bobby, our bellman, was both helpful and professional, and the door team was equally pleasant. I particularly remember a kind team member from Grenada who also handled our bags when we departed. A big shoutout to Cynthia, the restaurant manager—thank you for your amazing service and kindness! Roma, the Ethiopian lady at the café, was exceptionally sweet, and Sade was both professional and warm. The night bar manager with the ponytail, thank you for your genuine kindness as well. Special thanks to the concierge team, including Ronaldo and another gentleman I interacted with often, who offered valuable advice, like tips on safety concerning wearing my watch in certain areas. Fort Matthew is one of the most intriguing and atmospheric historical sites in Grenada. Situated on Richmond Hill overlooking the island's capital, St. George's, it is considered the largest fort in Grenada. History of the Fort Construction was initiated by the French in the 18th century, around 1779. After control of the island shifted to the British, they significantly expanded the fortifications and named it Fort Matthew in honor of General Edward Mathew. The fort was built to protect the harbor of St. George's and secure control over the surrounding areas. Thanks to its elevated position—over 200 meters above sea level—it offered a commanding view of nearly the entire southern part of the island. What to See Today Despite its age, many historical features remain beautifully preserved: massive stone walls; gunpowder magazines; barracks; tunnels and underground chambers; breathtaking panoramic views of St. George's, the Carenage, and the coastline. Connection to Richmond Hill Prison Right next to the fort lies the infamous Richmond Hill Prison, the oldest prison in Grenada. Built by the British in the late 18th century, it was long regarded as one of the most overcrowded prisons in the Caribbean. The close proximity of the fort and the prison gives this site a rather unique vibe: you can simultaneously experience colonial military history and more recent chapters of the island's past. Fun Fact Fort Matthew is linked to the nearby Fort Frederick by a network of defensive structures. Many tourists choose to visit both forts in a single trip. While Fort Frederick is more well-maintained and famous for its picture-perfect views, Fort Matthew tends to feel more rugged and mysterious—making it the perfect place to soak in the spirit of old Grenada.

It is perched atop Richmond Hill, just east of the island's capital, St. George's, at an elevation of about 250 meters (820 feet) above sea level. Why was it built? The fort's construction began under the French in 1779 during their rule over Grenada. Following the Seven Years' War, the island repeatedly changed hands between the French and the British, prompting both sides to heavily fortify their positions. Interestingly, it was the British who finally completed the construction after regaining control of the island. What is it famous for? Fort Frederick is often referred to as the "backwards-facing fort." While most coastal fortresses point their cannons out to sea to fend off enemy ships, Fort Frederick had some of its guns aimed inland. This unique design stemmed from fears that an enemy force might capture the nearby Fort Matthew and launch an inland assault. What can you see today? The biggest draw for visiting Fort Frederick is the breathtaking panoramic views. From its historic walls, you can overlook: · The entire city of St. George's; · The picturesque Carenage bay; · The scenic lagoon; · The island's southern coastline; · The neighboring Fort Matthew; · The lush, mountainous regions of central Grenada. Many consider this to be the absolute best vantage point on the island. Fort Frederick also played a significant role during Grenada's political crisis and the subsequent U.S. invasion in October 1983 (Operation Urgent Fury). During that time, the fortress was utilized by Grenadian military forces and their allies. Remnants of this turbulent period remain woven into the fort's rich history. For travelers, it’s one of the top spots in Grenada to snap spectacular photos of the capital and truly appreciate the strategic brilliance of St. George's coastal defense. It's especially magical at sunset when the golden hour lights up the city's red rooftops and the sparkling harbor waters.

Shodoo Falls is situated in St. Andrew Parish, just outside the village of Constantine. Its biggest draw is how incredibly accessible it is. It's just a short walk from the road to the falls, and you can spot some parts of the cascade almost as soon as you arrive. Shodoo Falls is a stunning waterfall in eastern Grenada, tucked away amidst lush tropical foliage, but it spares you the hassle of a long jungle trek. The water cascades down dark volcanic rocks in several streams, creating a beautiful tiered effect. Unlike the roaring Annandale or the cascading Seven Sisters, Shodoo feels much more organic and "untouched," like a well-kept secret among the locals. One of the best things about visiting Shodoo is getting a taste of authentic rural Grenada. Along the way, you'll pass by local houses, fruit trees, and the everyday life of the islanders—a refreshing break from the usual tourist trails. For instance, we even spotted a whole family of goats grazing during our visit! The only downside was the weather. It poured both the day before and on the day of our trip, leaving the waterfall and river completely muddy! Just look at the photos—I've never seen a waterfall so brown. However, the rainy season is just kicking off in Grenada, so it comes with the territory. I'm absolutely certain the waterfall is breathtaking when the weather is nice!

The vessel was built in Sweden in 1950 for the Swedish Maritime Administration. It is named after the area where it once served. The ship operated as a floating lighthouse off the Swedish coast, warning vessels of dangerous shoals and aiding navigation in the Baltic Sea. After being decommissioned, it was purchased by private owners, and the vessel eventually found its way to the Caribbean. On November 4, 2006, the Västra Banken lightvessel was towed from the city port of Rostock, Germany, to the outer seaport and loaded onto the cargo ship MV Schippersgracht. Lifting the 250-ton vessel required both of the transport ship's cargo cranes, which operated at their maximum lifting capacity. After more than four hours, the lightvessel was successfully set on deck and securely tied down for its journey to the Caribbean. Over its long life, the Västra Banken has served as a restaurant, a bar, and a tourist attraction. Interestingly, it is one of the few surviving Swedish lightvessels located outside of Europe. It literally journeyed from the cold waters of the Baltic Sea to the tropical Caribbean, maintaining its historic appearance and serving as a reminder of a time when maritime safety relied not on satellites, but on the people who manned these floating lighthouses.
