“We think this is where World War III will begin.” Alla____hu Akbar! Alla_____hu Akbar! At the Dome of the Rock, groups of men shouted this repeatedly. Meaning “God Allah is Greatest,” this phrase often preceded terrorist attacks in the West. Located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock is the holiest of the holy for three theistic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. While the general areas outside of the mosque were open to tourists and the Jewish people, the Golden Dome and the mosque only permitted Muslims for worship. At the public area, the Jewish people often encountered animosity. The Arab worshipers that gathered in groups would chant, “alla____hu akbar!” to shoo them (and the secular and the religious tourists) away. Our tour guide stressed again and again: no Bibles! Security at the Dome of the Rock had to do with the presence (or actually, the forced absence) of the Bible. The rule was very strict. That was just one of the many ways that tension expressed itself at the holiest of the holy. The Muslims believed that Prophet Mohammed ascended to Heavens from the foundation rock at the Dome. The Jewish people and the Christians believed that this was the site where Abraham sacrificed his son Isaac. The Arabic chant notwithstanding, the area surrounding the dome was serene. I walked around in the wonderful weather, sun-soaked. Although I fancied a sneak-in for a look, I dared not temper with Muslim religious decrees. Nor would I stretch the limits of our Arabic Christian tour guide’s explicit warnings. A close view of the architecture served all my purposes. Furthermore, the Muslim-Jewish tension at play opened my eyes. Their interactions here were representative of the centuries-old strife between these peoples. Construction for the Golden Dome completed in 691 A.D., by the Muslim Caliph Abd Al Malik. It stood at the former site of a Roman temple, which was built on the yet former site of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. With the Roman invasion came the destruction of the Second Temple in 70A.D. n the Dome’s long history, many religious administrators have overseen and restored the structure. The most notable was the Jordanian Arabs. They shouldered the funds necessary for the gold-plated dome. The Muslim religious trust is the current administrator overseeing the Dome, after years of contentions. The three religions all laid claims on the Dome’s sacredness and significance. Lavish mosaics line the interior of the Dome. First of all, be careful not to arrive on a Saturday - it is a holiday and pretty much all shops and restaurants are closed except McDonalds. In case you have no choice, then you can wait until 7 pm when a few smaller shops will open. Most people book a tour to experience Jerusalem. However, if you are not into listening to historic details, just explore by yourself. The Old City is not large and there are no entrance fees to most attractions. If you leave the Old City and walk out West at the Jaffa Gate, you might get Jerusalem city Wifi. It is a bit spotty but helps. Staying overnight is pricey and low cost options are few and can be dicey. I almost wanted to book a bed at the Cinema Hostel as there were vacancies. Thank God I did not but thought to check it out first. On arrival there I stood at a looked door and the voice per speaker told me no vacancies. So be careful, check the places out before you book. If you want to take a local bus to Bethlehem or even to Hebron, go to the Damascus Gate.

The most ICONIC site in Jerusalem belongs to the Dome of the Rock! It has got to be the highlight of my trip getting up close to the shrine! Dome of the Rock is a significant Islamic shrine in Jerusalem. It is one of the most sacred sites to both Jews and Muslims! However, before visiting the site, you must do some homework first! While there are multiple entrances to the dome of the rock, you can ONLY enter the dome of the rock as a non muslim from the Western Wall! The entrance is only open for 1-2 hours from Sunday to Thursday and they’ll let you go on a bridge! Also, since it is a religious site, dress as modest as you can! In the heart of Israel’s capital is the old town! This area has 4 quarters and has some of the most beautiful architecture in the region. Attractions include being able to walk the stations of the cross and see other sites that are important to numerous religions. This is the holiest site in Christianity as it contains the site of Jesus's crucifixion and his tomb where rose on the third day. I am not religious but I could feel the weight of history as I entered the church. It is very popular with tourists and pilgrims so be prepared for a long wait at times. The church is located just a few hundred metres from holy Muslim and Jewish sites in the old city.

When wandering the old city of Jerusalem, I stumbled upon the Cotton Merchants market. This is the joy of getting lost! it is a beautiful lane that leads to the Al Aqsa mosque, and will amaze passers by with the array of items on sale. The market has a history that goes back centuries and is noted for its diverse sweets and food on sale. Be aware that non Muslims are not allowed to visit Al Aqsa at certain times.

The Via Dolorosa, also known as the Way of the Cross, is the most sacred road in the hearts of Christians. This road refers to the last section of the road that Jesus walked after carrying the cross. It starts near the Lion Gate and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was finally crucified. It passes through fourteen stations in between and is about 500 meters long. Although today's Via Dolorosa is only a pilgrimage route designed in the 16th century for Catholics, it has not hindered believers from making pilgrimages. Every Friday at 3pm, Franciscan priests will give free guided tours, leading devout groups to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. The 14 Stations of the Cross are listed below: The first stop is near the lions, which was once the Roman governor's palace and is now a school for Palestinian Arabs. Jesus was sentenced to death here. The second stop is now the Franciscan Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross and the Church of Flagellation, where Jesus carried the cross. The third stop is at the Polish Chapel on the corner, where Jesus fell for the first time. The fourth station is very close to the third station and is now an Armenian Catholic chapel where Jesus met the Virgin Mary. The fifth station is now the Franciscan chapel, where Simon of Cyrene was forced to help Jesus carry the cross. A small convent chapel has now been built at the sixth station. At the sixth station, a woman named Veronica wiped the sweat and blood off Jesus' face with a towel. The towel is now kept in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Continuing along the souk, you will reach the seventh stop, which is now also the Franciscan Chapel, where Jesus fell again. The eighth station is located next to the Greek Orthodox church, where Jesus comforts the women of Jerusalem and advises them not to cry for themselves. Explore a giant crater at Mitzpe Ramon Mitzpe Ramon is one of the most unique experiences in Israel. Located in the Negev desert, it’s a town that sits on the northern cliffs of the Ramon Crater. It’s a great place for hiking or biking, along with exploring wildlife. You can even take a jeep tour of the crater or repel from the edge. With its strange colors and otherworldly feel, The Ramon Crater is about the closest most of us will ever get to seeing Mars. There’s also a recently opened Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center if you’re interested in learning about the geological story of the crater, the largest landform of its type in the world. Get a great view of the Old City of Jerusalem from the Austrian Hospice If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the Old City but want a better view of the area, this is the place to go. The Austrian Hospice is a 19th century guesthouse that used to cater to German and Austrian visitors to the city. The Dome of the Rock, the Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm, the Mount of Olives, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher are all visible from the roof of the hospice. Visit the 11th wonder of the world at Kibbutz Ein Gedi A kibbutz is a typically agricultural-based collective settlement unique to Israel. The first was built in 1910, and there are currently 270 in the country. While there are plenty of interesting kibbutzim to explore in Israel, Kibbutz Ein Gedi is one of the best options. This kibbutz is located at the edge of the Judean Desert on the west coast of the Dead Sea. There’s a 100-dunham botanical garden inside with over 900 plant species including tropical trees, biblical flora, and many desert plants. Home to 500 people, It’s the only populated botanical garden in the world and is recognized by the National Geographical Society as “the 11th wonder of the world.” Visit a harbor from the 1st century BCE at Caesarea National Park If you’re into beautiful beaches, ancient harbor ruins, and archaeology, this park halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa is for you. It was named the best tourist spot in the Middle East by Travel & Leisure in 2020, and has lived up to its title ever since. Dating back to King Herod, It was built in the 1st century BCE and includes a well-preserved Roman theater, mosaics, columns, and sea views. The Temple Mount is located in the Old City of Jerusalem and is a holy place for Christians, Jews and Muslims. For Christians, the Bible records that this is the place where Jesus suffered, was buried, resurrected, and ascended to heaven, so it is highly valued by Christianity. However, Jews believe that this is the place where the Jewish ancestor Abraham received God's will and sacrificed his son. It is their most sacred place. Muslims believe that this is the place where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the mountain is the third holiest place after the holy city of Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. The Temple Mount was originally occupied by Judaism, and the First Temple was built on the mountain. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed by the king of Babylon in 587 BC, and the holy objects placed in the temple, such as the Ark of the Covenant and Noah's Ark, disappeared. Afterwards, King Herod led the Jews to drive out the Babylonians and built a more magnificent Second Temple on the original site.
