Lanzhou travel guide and discussion

Gansu is a province in Northwest China boasting an incredibly diverse landscape, ranging from vast deserts and mountain ranges to ancient cities along the Silk Road. 🤎 Begin your journey in Lanzhou, the city by the Yellow River, before following history's footsteps to the province's many treasures. A must-see highlight is the Zhangye Danxia Landform, featuring multi-colored mountains with stunning, striped patterns. 🌈⛰️ Then, head to Dunhuang, a desert oasis where you can witness the Mingshashan Sand Dunes, the Crescent Moon Lake, and the Mogao Caves—a premier site for Buddhist art on the Silk Road. Further along, you'll find Jiayuguan, the Ming Dynasty's strategic western terminus of the Great Wall, offering an atmosphere miles away from China's bustling metropolises. 🏯 Gansu is perfect for those seeking a different side of China, blending majestic nature, Silk Road history, and landscapes that transform with every destination. 🇨🇳✨

Deep in Gannan, Zhagana unfolds beneath towering cliffs and dramatic stone peaks. Mist drifts slowly through the valleys, softening the rugged mountains and giving the entire landscape an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Traditional wooden houses are scattered across green meadows and mountain slopes, while wisps of cooking smoke rise gently into the cool alpine air. Against the immense backdrop of rock and sky, everyday village life feels wonderfully small and peaceful. Walk along the mountain paths and the scenery changes with every turn — mossy slopes, wild grasses, distant peaks and clouds moving through the valleys. The fragrance of vegetation carried by the mountain breeze adds another layer to the experience. Zhagana's beauty is not only in its spectacular scenery, but also in its sense of distance from the outside world. Here, life seems to follow the rhythm of the mountains rather than the clock. 📍 Zhagana Scenic Area, Diebu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, China 🇨🇳 🚗 How to Get There: The most convenient way is by private car, chartered vehicle or organised tour. From Lanzhou, travel towards Diebu County, then continue to Zhagana. The journey involves long stretches of mountain roads, so allow plenty of time and check road and weather conditions before travelling. 📸 Photography Tip: Early morning is ideal for capturing mist lingering around the peaks. From an elevated viewpoint, use the wooden houses and meadows in the foreground to show the dramatic scale of the surrounding mountains. ✨ Signature Feeling: Misty peaks, alpine meadows, wooden homes and the quiet rhythm of mountain life. Above the clouds, Zhagana feels like a village where the mountains have kept time still.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if nature traded its usual green and brown palette for a box of vivid watercolors, the Zhangye Danxia Landform in Gansu Province, China is your answer. Millions of years in the making, this geological wonder was formed as red sandstone and mineral deposits were layered down over 24 million years. Tectonic plate movements pushed these compressed layers upward, creating dramatic rolling mountains and sharp cliffs. Over eons, relentless wind and rain carved the soft stone into undulating ridges. Historically situated right along China’s ancient Northern Silk Road, merchants and travelers once trekked past these arid, colorful hills. Today, the "Rainbow Mountains" stand as a breathtaking testimony to the raw power and artistry of the natural world. Getting out to this technicolor dreamscape is surprisingly slick and straightforward thanks to China’s high-speed rail network. The most popular gateway is Zhangye West Railway Station, which connects seamlessly to major hubs like Lanzhou or Xi'an. Once you step off the high-speed train, the park sits roughly 40 kilometers away. You can hop on a local public shuttle bus from the station, or take a quick 40-minute taxi straight to the park's main entrance. Admission runs around ¥74 to ¥93 RMB (roughly $10 to $13 USD), which includes access to the internal sightseeing buses that transport you between the designated viewing platforms. To catch the mountains at their absolute most intense, plan your visit for late afternoon into the golden hour. As the sun drops, the low-angled light catches the mineral stripes and transforms the hills into glowing waves of deep magenta, rich ocher, and pale teal. Head straight for Hongxia Terrace (Platform 4)—it’s widely considered the premier sunset viewing spot in the park. Pro local tip: if you happen to catch a light rain shower earlier in the day, you've hit the ultimate jackpot! Moisture on the sandstone acts like a natural polish, drastically saturating the mineral pigments and making the colors pop like a freshly painted canvas. Just remember that the rock formations are extremely fragile, so stick strictly to the raised boardwalks and bring layers to handle the cool desert breeze once the sun goes down. #ZhangyeDanxia #RainbowMountains #GansuTravel #ChinaTravel #SilkRoad #ExoticDestinations #NatureIsArt #Wanderlust #BucketListTravel

Don’t miss the Yellow River Scenic Area (address: Binhe Road, open 07:00–20:00), where you’ll find cool bridges, riverside walks, and INSANE sunset views. The Zhongshan Bridge is basically Lanzhou’s superstar landmark. Want some culture? This Dunhuang guide cuts out the fluff and focuses on "beating the heat, avoiding traps, and dodging crowds," making it perfect for your trip in autumn 2026 (September). 1. Core strategy: How to travel smart during peak season? Dunhuang is still hot during the day in September, and Mogao Caves tickets are extremely hard to get. · Book 30 days in advance: Try to snag a regular ticket (includes 8 caves + digital film) on the "Mogao Caves Reservation" mini-program at 1:00 AM (Beijing Time). If you only manage to get an emergency ticket (includes 4 caves), I recommend skipping it—the lines are terrible. · Time management: Visit the caves in the morning, rest at noon, and head to the desert after 6:00 PM. Try to book the first Mogao Caves slot (8:00 AM) to avoid the scorching sun and crowds. 2. 3-day essential itinerary (reverse-flow version) Day 1: Eastern historical route (early start + midday rest) · Morning: Mogao Caves (allow 4 hours). Afterward, head back to the city for lunch and return to your hotel for a nap. · 5:00 PM: Head to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. The light is best at this time; climb the sand dunes to watch the sunset (around 8:00 PM). I highly recommend riding a camel to the top (¥100)—it saves energy and is a great experience. · Evening: Stroll through Shazhou Night Market and try donkey meat noodles or braised lamb with flatbread. Day 2: Western Gobi route (chartered car/ride-share) · Chartered car costs about ¥400–500. Route: Dunhuang Ancient City (just take photos at the entrance; going inside isn't recommended) → Yangguan Pass (experience the "no old friends" vibe) → Yumenguan Pass (check in at the "spring breeze" spot) → Yadan National Geopark (you must take an off-road vehicle deep into the hinterland to watch the sunset—it's breathtaking). · Pro tip: Cell signal is poor in the no-man's-land along the way, so download offline maps in advance. Day 3: Off-the-beaten-path route · Morning: Western Thousand Buddha Caves (a great alternative to Mogao Caves—no need to fight for tickets, and the experience is good) or the Dunhuang Museum (free, see replica caves and artifacts). · Afternoon: Visit Leiyin Temple (free, peaceful) or try desert camping (includes hot pot and off-road motorcycles, but it can be noisy overnight, so you can head back to your hotel after the fun). 3. Food: The hits and misses · Must-eats: Jingyuan Galiu Lamb (must order the boiled lamb; get a number before 5:00 PM); Xiajia Hezhi (top choice for breakfast); Apricot peel tea (the ultimate thirst quencher—look for the "Shuangyuan" brand). · Avoid: The "luminous cups" sold outside scenic spots are mostly resin; don't bother with the "viral" donkey meat noodle shops—just find any established local spot, the taste is about the same. 4. 2026 real-time tips · What to wear: Summer clothes during the day, with a light jacket for morning and evening. Solid black or red maxi dresses look best in desert photos (avoid the dirty rental clothes at the scenic spot entrance). · Sun protection: A face scarf and sunglasses are essential; desert UV rays can burn your eyes. · Transportation: Dunhuang has an airport, but direct flights are expensive. I recommend flying to Lanzhou and transferring to the train (Y667 tourist train—sleep overnight and arrive in the morning). 5. Final reminder If you only remember one thing: Never enter Mingsha Mountain between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The sand surface temperature exceeds 70°C, and it will melt your shoe soles.

When visiting Lanzhou in the Great Northwest, the Yellow River is a must-see. After admiring the iconic "Yellow River Mother" statue, find a riverside tea stall and enjoy a bowl of Sanpaotai tea. The sweet blend of longan and red dates is the perfect pick-me-up before you continue your journey. Next, you might consider the sheepskin rafts (please prioritize safety!). Watch the boatman navigate through the rapids as the spray hits you—it’s a real thrill! Afterwards, hop on the cable car for a bird's-eye view of the Yellow River carving its path below. The panoramic scenery is truly breathtaking. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon: relaxing yet exhilarating. 🚤 Sheepskin Rafts Crafted from goatskin, these rafts are an ancient local method for ferrying and transport. In 2006, they were officially recognized as part of Gansu's first batch of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Travel | Landmarks | Recommended Spots | Cultural Attractions | Local Vibes

There are exhibitions where you simply look at beautiful objects, and then there are exhibitions that make you think about how cultures have travelled across centuries. I visited the Gansu Provincial Museum to see “Silk Road Revisited · China on Porcelain — Glazes of Dunhuang”, a special exhibition exploring the relationship between ceramics, Dunhuang culture and the ancient Silk Road. The concept itself is fascinating: ceramics become the medium, while the Silk Road becomes the thread connecting everything together. For thousands of years, ceramics travelled along routes that connected China with the wider world. At the same time, Dunhuang became one of the great meeting points of civilizations, where artistic traditions, religious ideas and visual languages came together. This exhibition brings those two cultural worlds into the same space. The exhibition is divided into two main sections. “Desert Ceramic Echoes — A Thousand-Year Story of Ceramics Along the Silk Road” looks at the long relationship between ceramics and the Silk Road, while “Harmony Along the Silk Road — The Civilizational Exchange of the Ceramic Route” explores the way artistic traditions crossed geographical and cultural boundaries. What makes the exhibition particularly interesting is that it isn't simply a display of historical ceramics. It brings together 99 works by 69 outstanding Chinese and international ceramic artists, using a surprisingly diverse range of forms—including painted ceramics, porcelain-panel paintings, ceramic sculpture, artistic porcelain, video and multimedia installations. The works take Dunhuang culture as their creative foundation, but interpret its familiar imagery through the language of contemporary ceramic art. And this is where the exhibition becomes especially intriguing. The figures, colours, motifs and spiritual atmosphere associated with Dunhuang are instantly recognizable, yet they are no longer confined to murals inside an ancient cave. They are transformed through clay, glaze, sculpture, contemporary composition and new media. The result is a conversation between the ancient and the contemporary. Dunhuang provides the memory. Ceramics provide the material. And the Silk Road provides the connection between them. Walking through the exhibition, I found myself thinking about how remarkably far artistic ideas can travel. A visual motif created centuries ago can still inspire an artist today; a material developed in one part of China can become part of a much wider story of cultural exchange. Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about heritage. It isn't necessarily something that should remain frozen in the past. Sometimes the best way to preserve a cultural memory is to allow it to keep evolving—to let artists reinterpret it, question it and give it a new visual language. The exhibition therefore feels less like a simple retrospective and more like a meeting across time. Ancient Dunhuang meets contemporary ceramics. The desert meets the kiln. The Silk Road meets the museum. And thousands of years of artistic memory find a new expression through glaze and clay. 📍 Gansu Provincial Museum, Lanzhou, Gansu, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Look beyond individual pieces and photograph the relationship between works. Ceramic sculpture, glaze, lighting and surrounding installations can create interesting layers, especially when ancient Dunhuang imagery is reinterpreted in contemporary forms. ✨ Ancient imagery, modern clay, luminous glazes and the timeless spirit of the Silk Road. Perhaps the most fascinating part of Dunhuang is not simply what has survived from the past, but how its artistic spirit continues to travel—finding new forms, new materials and new ways to speak to the present. 🏺🌏

We came to Lanzhou for the famous noodles… but this city completely surprised us. 👀🌶️ Everyone knows Lanzhou for its hand-pulled beef noodles, but after spending time here, we realized the food experience goes way beyond one bowl of noodles. Our biggest Lanzhou tip? Come hungry and get lost in the night markets. Once the lanterns turn on, the streets become one enormous outdoor kitchen. Smoke from the grills, giant sizzling pans, freshly baked bread and skewers EVERYWHERE. 🥩🔥 Don’t make too much of a food plan. Walk around, see what looks good and eat whatever your belly allows you to. 😂 🥩 Start with the skewers. Lamb, beef, chicken… grilled over fire and covered in spices and chili. One of our favorites was stuffing the freshly grilled meat into bread with even more seasoning. 🥛 Then find Lanzhou’s famous egg milk tea. Be prepared to wait. Some of the popular stalls have seriously long queues, but we thought it was worth it. Warm, sweet, creamy and completely different from the milk tea most people associate with China. 🍜 Of course, you HAVE to eat Lanzhou Lamian. Lanzhou beef noodles have travelled all over China and far beyond, but there’s something special about eating them where they originated. Fresh hand-pulled noodles, beef broth, thinly sliced beef, coriander and chili oil. Simple and SO good. And if you can watch the noodles being made, even better. Seeing the dough pulled by hand into incredibly thin noodles in seconds is part of the experience. 🥟 Keep eating. Steamed buns, dumplings, breads and small local restaurants — Lanzhou is not the place for three carefully scheduled meals a day. 🧊 One more thing we almost never hear people mention: Fandosa cold tea. TRY IT. Especially after eating something spicy. It became one of our unexpected favorites. And when you finally need a break from eating, head to the Yellow River. Lanzhou grew along this legendary river, and the Yellow River Cableway is a fun way to see the city from above. 🚡 You can cross toward Baita Mountain (White Pagoda Mountain) and explore the traditional architecture while getting elevated views back across Lanzhou. 🏨 Where we stayed We booked IntercityHotel Lanzhou through Trip.com and were really happy with the choice. The hotel was nice, well located and made it easy to explore the city. Breakfast also had plenty of options — but there is one thing you absolutely shouldn’t skip: THE MOCHI. 😂 We didn’t expect hotel breakfast mochi to become one of our Lanzhou recommendations, but here we are. Try it. Our Lanzhou itinerary basically became: Noodles → Yellow River → cableway → explore → night market → skewers → egg milk tea → somehow eat again. 😂 Lanzhou might not be the first city international travelers think of when planning a China trip. Maybe that’s exactly why you should go. 🇨🇳 Save this for your China trip — especially if you travel for food. #lanzhou #china #chinatravel #foodie #food

These four cities have very different styles. Do you prefer to see grassland horses, exotic cultures, vast deserts, or the blue sea? Tell me your choice, and I’ll plan a simple 4-day, 3-night itinerary for that city with must-avoid pitfalls. 😊

Listen up, ladies, Lanzhou is truly a great place to treat yourself. This guide first lays out my must-visit list. Follow it and you’ll avoid most pitfalls. Let’s start with accommodation. I picked a hotel in Chengguan District for about ¥120 a night. Right downstairs is a night market that’s lively at night. Once settled, it’s time to explore. 💕 My must-visit list I really love these spots—every photo turns out great: Yellow River scenic route | free admission | half day The Yellow River runs right through Lanzhou. There are always people taking photos on the iron bridge. The water is yellow and wide, much swifter than you’d expect. At the bridgehead, an old man sells roasted sweet potatoes. The white smoke from his chimney blends with the mist over the river, giving a real sense of everyday life. From Baita Mountain, you can overlook the whole city of Lanzhou, with the Yellow River bending at the foot of the mountain. A local guy pointed out, “See, the Yellow River is the mother river, and Lanzhou is cradled in her arms.” 🎯 Don’t miss these experiences: · Zhongshan Bridge (the first iron bridge over the Yellow River) for photos. The night lights are beautiful · Climb to the top of Baita Mountain Park for a panoramic view of Lanzhou and the river bend · Visit Gansu Provincial Museum to see the Flying Horse of Gansu (free reservation), doable in half a day The smell of cumin and chili from street food stalls drifts in the air. The wind rustles the leaves. The temperature on the mountain is 7–8 degrees cooler than down below, luckily I brought a jacket. Lanzhou feels like a warm milk tea—sweet but not cloying, just right. 🍰 Food diary As a foodie, I can say Lanzhou’s appetite demand is huge: 1️⃣ **Beef noodles** (¥8 per bowl) Lanzhou beef noodles are the best I’ve ever had—clear broth, white radish, red chili, green herbs, and yellow noodles, the classic five colors. The noodles are chewy, the broth rich and fresh, and the chili oil fragrant without being overpowering. The noodle shop owner said, “Beef noodles are best in the morning because the broth is simmered early. By afternoon, it’s not as fresh.” 💸 Expense breakdown Here’s my budget breakdown. You can travel on a budget and still enjoy it: | Item | Cost | |---|---| | Accommodation | ¥120/night | | Food | ¥80–120/day | | Tickets | ¥150–250 | | Transportation | ¥30–50/day (bus + taxi) | In total, you can have a great trip for about ¥600–700 per person over two or three days, depending on your spending. Staying in hostels and eating street food can save even more. Lanzhou healed me during a chaotic time. If you’re tired too, come see it for yourself. One last note: traveling solo is amazing! Lanzhou is safe and gentle. Be brave and take a little trip just for you. Lanzhou · Gansu Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport Lanzhou Station Lanzhou West Station Lanzhou Ink Danxia Scenic Area

Ladies, listen up❗️I’ve been back from this hidden gem in Zhangye for a month and I’m still savoring it. July in Zhangye is like a skylight opened by heaven for the northwest🪟 The sun is strong but the breeze is cool. Wearing a dress isn’t hot, and wearing a jacket isn’t cold. The comfort level makes you want to settle down right there. 🚗 Here’s the travel info you need first Flights to Zhangye are limited, and direct flights are scarce. My route was flying to Lanzhou first, then from Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport taking the high-speed train straight to Zhangye West Station. The whole trip takes less than two hours, and the ticket costs just over 100 yuan💰 The high-speed train from Lanzhou to Zhangye runs through the Hexi Corridor. The scenery outside the window changes from loess plateaus to Gobi oasis, then to distant snow-capped mountains. Two hours is nowhere near enough to take it all in. From Zhangye West Station, a taxi to the Danxia Scenic Area is about 40 km and takes around 50 minutes. If you don’t want to take a taxi, Zhangye West Bus Station has direct buses to the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s 15 yuan per person, with buses every half hour. During peak season, it’s best to arrive early and line up. For those driving, just navigate to "Danxia North Gate." The scenic area parking fee is 10–20 yuan per day. Parking is tight in summer⚠️ It’s best to arrive before 7 AM, or you’ll be circling outside waiting for a spot. 🏜️ How to make the most of Danxia Tickets cost 40 yuan plus 38 yuan for the sightseeing bus, totaling 78 yuan for a visual feast. The value is honestly tear-worthy😭 The summer opening hours are 5:30 AM to 7 PM. If you want to see the sunrise, get there early. At 5:30 AM, the park is so empty you might have the whole viewing platform to yourself. I visited all four viewing platforms and arranged the best route for you👇 ① Xianyuan Platform → the first one after entering, great for warming up and taking photos with soft lighting ② Yunhai Platform → the best spot for photos! The "Monks worshiping Buddha" formation looks most like the real thing here ③ Jinxiu Platform → closest to the colorful hills, where you can see detailed layering patterns ④ Hongxia Platform → platform 4‼️ The sunset hotspot. Come after 5 PM and stay put 📸 Photo tips: Wear solid red, white, or yellow long dresses. The colorful hills make busy patterns look messy. Drones are banned inside the park, so don’t bring one or you’ll be stopped. A telephoto lens works better than a wide-angle lens. It compresses the scene and makes the colors pop. 🌡️ Survival guide for July in Zhangye Daytime temperatures can soar above 35°C, but shaded areas cool down immediately. UV rays are nuclear-level☢️ Sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher is a must, along with sunglasses, a hat, and sun-protective clothing. I skipped sunscreen on day three and ended up with a peeling nose that made me question life. Humidity stays below 30% year-round. If you’re from the south, your lips will crack on day one💧 Bring lip balm and a moisturizing spray, and drink twice as much water as usual. Night temperatures drop to around 15°C, with a day-to-night temperature difference of over 10 degrees. A light jacket is essential. 🗺️ Three-day, two-night itinerary Day 1️⃣ Arrive in Zhangye → visit the Giant Buddha Temple in the afternoon (ticket 41 yuan, built during the Western Xia period, home to the largest indoor reclining Buddha in China, 34.5 meters long. Seeing it in person is way more impressive than photos) → watch the sunset at Danxia in the evening Day 2️⃣ Early morning sunrise at Danxia → visit Binggou Danxia in the morning (ticket 45 yuan plus 15 yuan sightseeing bus. This park is completely different from the colorful Danxia. It features window-frame palace-style Danxia formations, fewer crowds, peaceful atmosphere, and great climbing experiences) → rest in the afternoon Day 3️⃣ Full-day hike at Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon → return trip 🏨 Accommodation is the highlight ⛰️ The guesthouse is in Nantai Village just outside the north gate of the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s a few hundred meters from the gate, surrounded by local villagers’ unique courtyards. At night, it’s so quiet you only hear the wind ⛰️ The room has a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Danxia. At around 5 AM, you don’t even have to get up. Just open the curtains and watch the glow slowly paint the hills🌄 The gradient from orange-pink to deep red is mesmerizing—I stared for 20 minutes without blinking ⛰️ The courtyard has a terrace lounge area with rattan loungers and a small tea table🍵 After watching the sunset, you can flop down on the lounger. The Danxia’s afterglow lingers in the distance, and with a cup of apricot peel tea in hand, life couldn’t be more perfect✨ ⚠️ A few final tips to avoid pitfalls ❶ There are no shade structures in the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s full sun exposure all the way. Bring an umbrella for sun protection and sudden rain ❷ The sightseeing bus runs about every 10 minutes. No need to rush, take your time ❸ July is peak season. Book accommodation at least two weeks in advance. Last-minute bookings are either three times more expensive or located 10 km away ❹ Distances from Zhangye city to attractions are not short. A private car for a day costs about 400–500 yuan. It’s best to share with 4 people ❺ The colors of Danxia are most vibrant after rain. If your schedule is flexible, plan your visit according to the weather forecast Zhangye is truly a place you want to visit again. The light, temperature, and colors in July are just right. The wildness and grandeur of the northwest can’t be captured in photos—you have to see it with your own eyes to understand what "God’s spilled palette" really means🎨 ——

Exclusive pitfalls to avoid (unique to this guide) 1. City countryside activities ❌ Don’t visit Ink wash Danxia before noon. The mountain has no shade and sunburn risk is high. Best to enter after 4 PM ❌ Don’t just use the main stairs at Baita Mountain. Side paths are quieter with better photo views ❌ Don’t get close to unprotected riverbanks by the Yellow River. Flood season currents are fast. Stay away from dangerous water areas 2. City transport ❌ Riverside road is fully congested on holidays in the evening. Prioritize biking or metro to the Yellow River in the evening ❌ Don’t drive a regular car to Danxia in the rainy season. Some dirt roads are soft. Carpooling in an SUV is safer 3. Food and dining ❌ Zhangye Road street-side trendy beef noodles are overpriced. Old shops in residential areas have more authentic broth ❌ Don’t blindly buy loose lily products at night markets. Choose quality products at dry goods supermarkets ❌ Northwest dishes are large portions. Don’t order too much at once to avoid waste 4. Climate details ❌ Lanzhou air is extremely dry. Keep hydrated daily and carry lip balm and face masks ❌ Wear short sleeves during the day but add a jacket by the Yellow River in the evening. The river valley cools quickly ❌ The city has few trees and strong UV reflection. Sunscreen alone isn’t enough. Use strong sun protection 6. Overall summary Lanzhou from July to September is a Silk Road old city nourished by the Yellow River. It lacks the vastness of Gannan grasslands and the pure Danxia landforms of Zhangye. On one side are rich Silk Road artifacts and Ming-Qing architecture; on the other, the rushing Yellow River crossing the city. The countryside ink wash Danxia is unique, and the old city hides the most authentic northwest street life. Spend mornings in museums learning about the thousand-year Silk Road, evenings at Danxia waiting for painterly sunsets, and nights by the Yellow River drinking tea and enjoying the breeze. Taste fresh mountain lamb and northwest specialty noodles at every meal. Stay hydrated and protected from the sun, avoid the midday heat, and steer clear of street vendors to experience the golden city’s rugged charm and warmth.

“Back from Lanzhou. I really don’t recommend going in July or August because the line for beef shank lasted until 2 AM and I still didn’t get to eat! The title ‘the only provincial capital city with the Yellow River running through it, the top nightlife spot in Northwest China’ is not an exaggeration! Honestly, don’t go (peak season edition) 1️⃣ 🚶‍♀️ Night market so crowded you can’t move: The barbecue stalls on Zhengning Road stretch from one end of the street to the other. Trying to grab a small stool to eat hand-pulled meat, standing for half an hour made my legs numb. The guy behind me carrying draft beer kept accidentally brushing against my sleeve 2️⃣ 📸 All people in photos: Taking a panoramic shot of Zhongshan Bridge, the ‘first bridge over the Yellow River,’ the frame is packed with at least a dozen tourists holding trendy sweet fermented rice drinks. Waiting for an empty shot means squatting for ten minutes. The Yellow River wind blew my hair into my face so much I didn’t dare lift my hand to brush it away 3️⃣ 💸 Prices skyrocketed: A 10-minute sheepskin raft ride on the Yellow River costs 180 yuan. A small bowl of gray beans at the night market is 20 yuan. When I scanned the QR code to pay with cash in hand, I almost thought I was seeing the wrong price on the order page 4️⃣ 🌬️ Sunburned to peeling skin: The midday sun in July shines directly on the Yellow River walkway. The ground temperature soared to 38 degrees. I accidentally touched the iron plate at the hand-pulled meat stall by the roadside and it burned me so badly I jumped three feet back 5️⃣ 🧊 Tricky temperature swings: Wearing short sleeves in the afternoon while visiting White Pagoda Mountain made me sweat, but going out at midnight for barbecue, the mountain wind chilled me to the bone. I was too lazy to bring a jacket and ended up shivering while eating lamb skewers, which ruined the taste Best time to visit May | Purple-leaf plums and elm blossoms line Binhe Road in full bloom. The Yellow River breeze carries the scent of locust flowers to your face. Night market wait times are cut in half. You can even snag freshly braised hot beef shank at the hand-pulled meat stalls October | Crisp, clear autumn days. The Yellow River water feels warm from the sun. From the top of Lanshan Mountain, you can see the city’s countless lights so clearly that even shadows are visible. There are two-thirds fewer tourists than in summer, and you won’t have to fight for a seat when going out for beef noodles in the morning Useful information · Opening hours: Most city attractions open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The riverside scenic area is free and open 24 hours · Tickets and validity: Most core attractions are free. The Gansu Provincial Museum special exhibition ticket costs 30 yuan. Other sites require same-day reservations and are valid only on the day of booking · Address: Lanzhou, Gansu Province Transportation tips 🚗 [Top pick] Taxi transfers within the city: Lanzhou is small. Cross-district taxi rides cost only about 10 yuan. No need to squeeze into buses. Just say the place name and the driver will get you to the beef noodle shop in about 10 minutes 🚌 Yellow River sightseeing bus: The ‘Yellow River style line’ sightseeing bus costs 2 yuan per person. It runs along Binhe Road connecting Zhongshan Bridge, White Pagoda Mountain, and the Waterwheel Expo Park. Sitting by the window and enjoying the river breeze is amazing 🚕 Shared taxi for Lanshan night tour: Splitting the fare among 3 people is much cheaper than taking a solo taxi up the mountain. If you meet a local driver, they might even give you two bags of their homemade sweet fermented rice. They’ll take you to a quiet, less crowded scenic spot on the mountain to see the whole city’s night view. It was so great I wanted to bring the driver two skewers of grilled lamb tendons as a thank-you gift before I left Must-visit attractions 1️⃣ Zhongshan Bridge Yellow River viewing area: Standing in the middle of the century-old iron bridge looking upstream and downstream of the Yellow River. The muddy river water rushes east with waves. At dusk, shooting the bridge’s silhouette with lights on against the backlight is atmospheric. Even the shadows of the Yellow River speedboats floating by add to the vibe 2️⃣ Gansu Provincial Museum ‘Bronze Galloping Horse’ display case: Squat for half an hour in front of the popular horse-stepping-on-flying-swallow exhibit. The green bronze horse stepping on a flying bird with its tail raised looks adorable. The footage you casually shoot is full of funny moments for your vlog 3️⃣ White Pagoda Mountain summit lookout: Climb the stone steps to the pavilion at the top and overlook the entire city of Lanzhou. The Yellow River looks like a yellow ribbon winding through the city. Dense old buildings spread from the mountain to the clouds. The panoramic shot you take can be used as wallpaper 4️⃣ Waterwheel Expo Park old waterwheel: Stand next to the creaking century-old wooden waterwheel and take photos by the cool water. The fine water droplets splash on your face, feeling refreshing. The vintage vibe is so strong you don’t even need filters Practical tips ☑️ Don’t think Lanzhou’s summer is cool and skip sunscreen. The UV rays by the Yellow River reflect off the water surface. Last time I forgot sunscreen on Binhe Road, and by afternoon my neck had a clear ‘T-shirt tan line’ that hurt for three days and made wearing clothes uncomfortable ☑️ Pack a thin fleece jacket. The night wind at the top of Lanshan Mountain is ten times wilder than you expect. Even if it’s 30 degrees at the foot of the mountain, after 10 minutes of wind at the summit at midnight, your arms will get goosebumps. No need to foolishly buy a secondhand 50-yuan windbreaker at the top ☑️ Don’t buy 30-yuan lamb skewers at the trendy stalls at the night market entrance. Hidden in the old alleys are community hand-pulled meat shops where lamb skewers cost 5 yuan each, sprinkled with cumin, juicy when bitten, and paired with free Fu tea that’s so fragrant you’ll want to stomp your feet ☑️ Bring a portable trekking pole. The stone steps on White Pagoda Mountain are ridiculously steep. You don’t feel it going up, but coming down your knees will shake from soreness. My friend didn’t bring one and had to squat by the roadside for 10 minutes before standing up after descending Special perks/easter egg Walk along the Yellow River’s sandy walkway into the deserted reed beds, and you’re likely to spot great egrets fluttering their white wings over the river, perching on cobblestones with plump little fish in their beaks, nodding their heads. The river breeze carries the aroma of lamb skewers grilled by an old man nearby. Blue-purple mallow petals dropped by local aunties walking by drift at your feet. All the frustration from waiting in line for beef noodles melts away. You’re immersed in the unique warm, lively atmosphere of Northwest China, feeling so comfortable you don’t even want to lift your feet to head back to the hotel.

UV rays are strong 2️⃣ Wear comfortable sneakers as there’s a short walk 3️⃣ Try to avoid weekends for fewer crowds and better photos 💡 Travel advice: Arrive around 10 AM for the best experience You can avoid the hottest time and get great lighting Bring some snacks and water as dining options inside are limited This place is definitely worth a visit! The colors are layered and vivid, like a natural palette🎨

Girls, I really could cry😭 Dunhuang in July is insanely hot during the day, but the desert nights are simply legendary! 🏜️ How to get to Dunhuang There aren’t many cities with direct flights to Dunhuang Mogao International Airport. Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have direct flights, but tickets are very expensive during peak season. My budget tip is to fly to Lanzhou first, then take a high-speed train to Dunhuang station. The whole trip takes about 7 hours and costs just over 200 yuan. If you’re short on time, Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport to Dunhuang takes about 1.5 hours, with four to five flights daily during summer peak. In 2026, night high-speed trains were added for summer travel, so you can arrive early morning—tested and reliable. 🏜️ Staying deep in the desert ⛰️ The tent camp is in a desert area exclusive to the Mingsha Mountain scenic spot, about a 10-minute drive from the east gate of the park, with driver pickup and drop-off ⛰️ The dome starry sky room has a fully transparent roof. Lying on the 25㎡ king-size bed, you can watch the Milky Way arch across the sky and catch shooting stars without getting up at midnight ⛰️ Private bathroom + air conditioning + desert sunset afternoon tea ☕ Enjoy an iced Americano in the evening breeze while watching the dunes turn golden—the atmosphere is unbeatable July is peak season for desert camping in Dunhuang, with prices around 800–1,200 yuan per night. It’s best to book at least two weeks in advance, as popular camps fill up instantly. 🏜️ The real highlight: Mogao Caves In 2026 peak season, Class A tickets cost 238 yuan per person. This includes two themed movies at the digital center, shuttle bus, and access to 8 caves. But! Only 6,000 tickets are available daily, and you must book 30 days in advance through official channels with real-name registration. Tickets sell out within 1–2 days in July, so set an alarm to grab yours! ⏰ Best time to enter (tested): 7:30 AM for the first group. Watching the two movies at the digital center takes about 40 minutes, then take the shuttle to the cave area. You’ll enter around 8:30 AM when it’s least crowded and the guide is most detailed. Class B tickets cost 100 yuan per person and include 4 caves plus shuttle bus, but no movies. There are 12,000 tickets daily, book 15 days in advance. If you miss Class A, don’t worry—Class B still covers the highlights, though the experience isn’t quite as good. ‼️ How to add special caves After visiting the regular caves, you can ask the guide to add special caves on site. Each costs 150–200 yuan. I recommend Cave 45 for its painted sculptures and Cave 57 for the "most beautiful bodhisattva" mural—definitely worth the extra cost. 🏜️ The right way to enjoy Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake Peak season tickets cost 110 yuan and allow multiple entries within 3 days, which is a great deal. Open from 5:00 AM to 8:30 PM. My plan: enter at 5 PM! The desert is scorching during the day, but the evening is just right. 👉 Enter through the middle gate, which is closest. Turn right after entering to find the camel rides, 100 yuan per person for about 40 minutes 👉 After riding, head straight to Crescent Lake for photos—the light is softest at this time 👉 Then climb the sand dunes to watch the sunset. If you’re low on energy, take the stairs on the right for an easier climb 👉 Don’t rush to leave after sunset! In 2026, Crescent Lake’s water level reached its highest in nearly 20 years. The night view with stars reflecting on the water is stunning Tickets are valid for 3 days from the first scan. You can re-enter the next day to catch the sunrise. At 5 AM, there are very few visitors. 🏜️ Must-bring checklist before the trip 🧴 SPF 50+ sunscreen is a must for face and neck—the desert UV is no joke 🕶️ Sunglasses + face scarf + sand-proof shoe covers—don’t leave any behind 💧 At least 2L of water daily. Bottled water costs 10 yuan per bottle inside the park 🧴 Lip balm + moisturizing spray. Humidity in Dunhuang in July is below 20%, so skin gets extremely dry 🔋 Power bank is essential. Signal is weak in the desert and drains battery fast 🏜️ Common pitfalls to avoid ❌ The Shazhou Night Market is overpriced and very repetitive. Just browse to soak in the atmosphere ❌ Don’t pick the cheapest desert camping option. Public restrooms are really... well, spend 200 yuan more for a private bathroom ❌ No photos or touching murals inside Mogao Caves. Guides will escort you out if caught ❌ Mid-July daytime temperatures in Dunhuang can reach 45℃+. Avoid climbing sand dunes at noon Lying in the desert all night, I woke up feeling this trip was worth it. The overwhelming Milky Way above can’t be captured by phone—you have to see it with your own eyes.

Xinghua Village Shoal Photo Spot: Original location for cool-toned photos with a light blue sky on cloudy days. Practical Tips & Outfit Advice 1. The Danxia area has no shade, and UV rays are extremely strong, so sunscreen, arm sleeves, and a sun umbrella are essential; there's a large temperature difference between day and night, bring a light jacket for the evening. 2. There are no supply points on the mountain plank road, bring your own bottled water and small snacks, prices in the scenic area are higher. 3. Stepping on the Danxia mountains is prohibited, the soil layer is fragile and damage is irreparable, all photos are limited to viewing from the walkways and platforms. 4. Drone Photography Tips: Most areas of the scenic spot allow drone photography, but flying is restricted near the spiral viewing platform, inquire with staff in advance. 5. Outfit Suggestions: Light-colored clothes, white dresses create a striking contrast with the colorful mountains, making for better photos; avoid wearing red or orange clothes as they blend in with the mountains. Social Media Captions 1. Stepping into the Northwest color palette, Shuimo Danxia hides millions of layers of colors of the earth. 2. Every step a plank road, every hill a splendor, a natural oil painting of the Loess Plateau. 3. The sunset washes over the Nine-Color Danqing, dyeing the ravines and gullies a fiery orange-red. 4. No filter needed, Shuimo Danxia naturally possesses an ink-wash landscape texture.

In June, Jincheng (Lanzhou) holds many hidden gems cherished by locals, offering an escape from the hustle of tour groups and a taste of authentic Northwest life. Today, I'll take you to discover a different Lanzhou, allowing you to deeply experience the hidden charm of this Yellow River city. 【Lanshan Park: Lanzhou Locals' Backyard Garden】 Many tourists visit Baita Mountain, but few know that Lanshan Park is truly beloved by Lanzhou locals. In June, Lanshan is lush with greenery, and the temperature is 5℃ cooler than the city, making it a natural summer retreat. I recommend going up the mountain around 4 or 5 PM. First, find a spot in one of Lanshan's tea gardens, order a cup of Gaiwan tea, snack on sunflower seeds, and gaze at Lanzhou city below. This kind of leisurely feeling is something no other scenic spot can offer. Lanzhou's tea garden culture is truly therapeutic. For just a few dozen yuan, you can sit for an entire afternoon, with free sunflower seeds and hot water provided. You can play cards, chat, daydream, or simply do nothing but enjoy the breeze. In the evening, head to Santai Pavilion to watch the sunset and the night view. This is Lanzhou's most beautiful spot for night photography – as the sun sets and the city lights come on, the entire city of Lanzhou glows brightly, and the Yellow River flows through it like a golden ribbon. That breathtaking beauty will be unforgettable. After descending, you can go to Zhengning Road at the foot of the mountain for a late-night snack, or directly enjoy "Big Plate Chicken" (Dapanji) or "Kangkou Lamb" (Kangkou Yangrou) at one of the farmhouses on the mountain. The flavors are authentic, and the prices are reasonable. 【Agan Town: An Industrial Town Forgotten by Time】 Agan Town is just a 40-minute drive from Lanzhou. This industrial town, with a history of over a century, was once Lanzhou's most important coal mining base. Now, its prosperity has faded, but it has left behind precious memories of an era. Walking through the town's streets, with Soviet-style buildings, abandoned factories, and old cinemas on both sides, feels like stepping back into the 1970s or 80s. I especially recommend visiting Shifogou National Forest Park, right next to Agan Town. This is a pristine secondary forest with over 90% forest coverage. In June, Shifogou is covered in blooming wildflowers, and the air is fresh, making it a natural oxygen bar. You can hike in the forest or picnic by the stream. This secluded tranquility is truly therapeutic. For lunch, try a bowl of Lamb Paomo in Agan Town. This local specialty is different from Xi'an's Paomo; Lanzhou's version is boiled, resulting in a richer broth and more tender meat, which is very delicious. There are also many shops in town selling handmade potato vermicelli, which are chewy and great to buy a few pounds to take home. 【Liujiaxia Reservoir: The Blue Pearl on the Plateau】 Many people don't know that a "Plateau Maldives" – Liujiaxia Reservoir – is hidden near Lanzhou. It's a 2-hour drive from Lanzhou. The water here is Tiffany blue and crystal clear, forming a stark contrast with the yellow Yellow River. You can take a boat tour of the reservoir and witness the spectacular "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" phenomenon where the Yellow River and Tao River converge, with the yellow river water and blue lake water distinctly separated, which is truly amazing. I highly recommend visiting Bingling Temple Grottoes, one of China's four major grottoes, with a history of over 1600 years, predating the Mogao Grottoes. The Buddha statues and murals in the grottoes are exquisite, especially the 27-meter-tall Great Buddha in Cave 171, which is incredibly impressive. Due to its inconvenient location, there are very few tourists here, allowing you to quietly appreciate these artistic treasures without the crowds found at Mogao Grottoes. For lunch, enjoy reservoir fish at Liujiaxia. They are freshly caught, with tender meat, delicious whether braised or stewed. Also, order a local bowl of Jiangshui Mian (sour soup noodles), which is spicy, sour, and refreshing – perfect for summer. 【Bafang Shisanxiang: Hui Ethnic Charm in Linxia】 Linxia is a 1.5-hour drive from Lanzhou, known as "China's Little Mecca," with a rich Hui ethnic flavor. Bafang Shisanxiang (Eight Blocks, Thirteen Alleys) is Linxia's most representative attraction. The residences here are typical Hui architecture, with exquisite brick carvings and intricate alleys, making you feel like you've stepped into the world of "One Thousand and One Nights." You can stroll leisurely through the alleys, watch elderly Hui people pray, listen to the joyful laughter of children, and experience the most authentic Hui life. I especially recommend visiting Dong Gongguan (East Mansion), a century-old mansion whose brick carving art is unparalleled. Each brick carving is lifelike and is a national intangible cultural heritage. For lunch in Linxia, try Hand-Grabbed Lamb. The lamb here is even more delicious than Lanzhou's, tender and without any gamey smell, paired with Gaiwan tea, it's absolutely superb. Also, try Fazimianchang (noodle sausage), Niangpizi (cold noodles), and Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats); every dish is delicious and won't disappoint. You must also try Linxia's Eight Treasure Tea, which contains goji berries, red dates, longans, sesame seeds, and raisins, making it sweet, fragrant, and increasingly delightful with every sip. 【Lanzhou Locals' Late-Night Canteen】 Lanzhou's nightlife truly begins after dark. Don't just go to Zhengning Road; locals prefer Nanguan Ethnic Flavor Street. Any lamb skewer shop here is delicious. I recommend grilled lamb kidney, grilled lamb tendon, and grilled lamb tripe, all freshly cut and grilled, with tender meat and an enticing aroma of cumin and chili. I especially recommend the Fangha Tianpeizi Milk Tea here. This is a unique Lanzhou milk tea that combines Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats) with milk tea, offering a unique taste that is both delicious and refreshing. Also, try Jiangshui Louyu, made from corn flour, shaped like small fish, soaked in sour soup, it's sour, spicy, and refreshing – a must-have summer delicacy. You can also visit Nongmin Alley, Lanzhou's food street, offering a wide variety of cuisines, from Northwest dishes to Sichuan cuisine, from hot pot to barbecue, you'll find everything. I recommend Pang Mama Hand-Grabbed Lamb, a long-standing Lanzhou brand, whose Hand-Grabbed Lamb, Braised Lamb, and Big Plate Chicken are all very authentic. Lanzhou in June is a city full of surprises. It's not a city that immediately wows you, but if you slow down and delve into its streets and alleys, you'll discover its charm hidden in every bowl of beef noodles, in every cup of Gaiwan tea, and in the smiles of every Lanzhou local. Come to Lanzhou, slow down, and experience the most authentic vibrancy and poetry of this golden city. --- Accommodation 🏨 Gansu Jinghu Wild Luxury Lake View Villa with Terrace 180° panoramic lake view independent villa with terrace, cabin-style tent design, and a lakeside restaurant.
