The Hippodrome Massimo is an ancient Roman arena site in the center of Rome, Italy, located between the Aventine Hill and the Palatine Hill. It is a very early and large-scale arena in ancient Rome. The arena was first built during the Roman monarchy era and was later expanded by Caesar, becoming the core venue for chariot races, gladiatorial performances and public celebrations. Its design became the model for arenas across the Roman Empire, with 12 compartments for chariot racing and bronze dolphin counters to record laps. During the Imperial period, obelisks and triumphal arches were added to the hippodrome, but the wooden stands were destroyed by fire many times and were gradually abandoned after the rise of Christianity. Today, only part of the runway and outer structure remain of the site, and the obelisk has been moved to People's Square and other places. As an open public park, it still hosts concerts and events. It is conveniently located near the metro station and is a must-visit place to experience Rome's glorious history.
