Walking into the No. 1 record store in Dadaocheng, you can not only feel the strong musical atmosphere, but also the full human touch. I took the initiative to ask the boss lady if I could take a photo. She agreed very enthusiastically and also talked to us about the founding process of the record store. She shared how she seized an opportunity during Taiwan’s most prosperous economic period in the 1950s to run the store and has continued to this day. If you want to experience the old side of Taipei then Dihua is for you - it’s a red brick and stone wonderland full of craft shops, cafes and markets. It’s such a contrast to the modern metropolis that sprawls around the base of Taipei 101 and offers a more relaxed way of life. It’s a web of pedestrianised shopping streets and back alleys that fan off them, it’s a very creative area and I think it’s the best place to come if you’re shopping for gifts. There are amazing clothes shops, jewellery shops , antique shops and my favourite - the woven bag shops. The recycled plastic woven bags are such a vital trend right now and they are available in so many beautiful colours - a perfect souvenirs that screams Taipei. It’s a great place for independent coffee shops and food and honestly my best advice, follow your nose! Walking on the cobblestone road, with rows of red brick buildings on both sides, it feels like traveling back to old Taipei in a second. Even the air has a faint scent of grass and old wood. After walking around for a while, I decided to find a teahouse to sit down and rest. South Street is home to antique buildings and the teahouse is filled with nostalgic furniture. Try smelling the tea in the scent bottle before deciding which one to drink. I ordered a pot of Wenshan Baozhong, which has a clear aroma and a long-lasting sweetness. While drinking and chatting, time seemed to slow down. That time of sitting quietly and doing nothing is really healing. After finishing the tea, I felt refreshed and continued walking towards Xiahai City God Temple. The incense is still very popular, and people seeking marriage partners come in waves. Unexpectedly, I saw a man leading a...pig at the temple gate? You are not mistaken, it is a real pig, wearing a leash and following its owner for a walk obediently. All passers-by stopped to take photos, and the atmosphere was extremely joyful.
