To visit Monaco, I travelled to the city of Nice, 15 kilometres west of this country. If you buy a ticket at the right time, you can get to Nice by train and bus from various European cities such as Milan, Italy (between 20 and 30 euros) and Paris, France (between 25 and 45 euros). There are also flights to Nice from various Schengen countries, operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air and EasyJet, which are sometimes cheaper than buses and trains (because of the flexibility you have in choosing your time and route). The train from Nice airport and the Intercity bus station (next to Terminal 1 of the same airport) to the city centre costs less than 2 euros. As it is much cheaper to stay in Nice than in Monaco, it makes sense to stay in Nice. When I saw that booking a room at the Hotel de Berne for two people was cheaper than the cost of two beds in a hostel (the total cost for two people is 45 euros per night), we chose this hotel to stay (as opposed to my usual practice of staying in a hostel). It should be noted that the published statistics and costs refer to 27 January 2023, and these costs may change (be more or less) in different seasons or in the coming years. At sunrise we went to the Nice-Ville station, just 150 metres from our accommodation, to catch the train to Monaco. A one-way ticket from Nice to Monaco and vice versa costs 4 euros each and departures are from around 6am to 11pm (every half hour). We arrived at Monte Carlo station in about 15 minutes and the sightseeing of Monaco began. Although Monaco was not a common destination for backpackers like us, we did not feel out of place at all. #timetotravel To my friends and I, the building is iconic because of the movie “Monte Carlo” starring Selena Gomez. We tried to take pictures at every filming location we could find!! The casino of Monte Carlo is really busy and packed with tourists. To enter the casino, there is an entrance fee of €18 and dress code. You also have to bring your passport along. This popular, artificial beach features clear waters, a volleyball court & a scenic promenade. Perfect to finish off your day in Monaco. Entrance is free and the water is crystal clear just like in Sharm El Sheikh. Nearby you will see a few restaurants and bars where you can sit and enjoy your favourite adult beverage. Although it's a small beach, it's actually not bad considering the size of Monaco. Even if you don't go swimming or sunbathing, you can visit the beach and have a nice walk around.

Le Metropole Shopping Center is all about luxury living, which is obvious when you see its lavish furnishings of crystal chandeliers, Italian marble floors, and upscale brands. With 80 shops selling everything from gourmet food and beauty treatments to designer clothes and exclusive timepieces, you’ll find most of your shopping needs met under the highly ornate ceiling. A good spot to escape the summer heat and humidity, you’ll also find a handful of swanky restaurants inside. Great if you need refuelling while you shop. With lots of high-end boutiques and exclusive brands available at Le Metropole Shopping Center, it should be no surprise that things aren’t cheap here. In April 2025, Morocco is a must-visit destination! Known as the African country that feels least like Africa, it boasts half sea and half desert, and has been repeatedly ranked among the top 10 travel destinations by Lonely Planet. 📌 Nice, France & Monaco State In all my diverse travels so far I was yet to tick off France and I thought "why tick off one country when I can tick off two?" so picked Nice as my French base for the weekend and was keen to explore the fantastic and contemporary state of Monaco. Why visit Nice & Monaco? 🤫 Bustling city life in Nice 🍽️ Excellent food and drink culture 🚄 Unblemished views of the Cote d'Azur as you venture towards Monaco via train 🇲🇨 Contemporary and vibrant adventures in Monaco 👟 Compact cities all accessible on foot Arriving at Nice airport at 11:00am on a Saturday morning, I was straight through passport control in no time and after a wait of around 10 minutes there was a tram ready to head to the city centre, a journey of around 20 minutes and at a cost of €10.00 including a return ticket which I'd go on to use the next day. 🌊 After arriving into the city centre I headed straight down to the seafront to get a glimpse of the Cote d'Azur (French Riviera) and was not disappointed. Despite visiting in January, the sea was blue, sand gold and palm trees adorned the promenade (Picture 1). 📷 I took a nice walk along the front to take in the views and then meandered back through the city's narrow streets and alleyways, passing a great deal of souvenir shops and local delicatessens. I came across striking buildings such as the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate (Picture 2) and the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, a Russian Orthodox Church (Picture 3). 🍽️ Time for something to eat and I ate a delicious pizza at an Italian restaurant back near the promenade. 🛌 I then headed to the hotel for rest as I knew I was to have a busy day the following day. Onto Day 2 and I was straight off to Nice-Ville, the main railway station to head to Monaco. ⛵📷 If you're thinking of heading to Monaco, you must do it by train! An upstairs seat on the double-deck InterCity trains gives you an amazing view of the French Riviera as the train passes in and out of the cliffs and stops at the small coastal villages (Picture 4). 🎰 Arriving in Monaco and after having traversed the steep cliff into the city centre via several escalators I arrived at the Monte-Carlo Casino, an unmissable sight on your trip (Picture 5). 🏰 After a tea and some rest my trip in Monaco continued with looking around at the sights such as the Marina (Picture 6) and the Prince's Palace of Monaco (Picture 7), which is often overlooked being a slight trip from the centre but well worth a look. 🚄 I took another brief stop back in France, the city of Menton (Picture 8) before it was back to the airport for my trip home. All in all, a great adventure and one for the bucket list. The views were the best part of it. I'll be back for sure! #springwander
