Venturing into the Central Business District, I craned my neck upwards to admire the towering skyscrapers. Our guide highlighted the unusual triangle-shaped Tower Melbourne, before pointing out the striking blue glass exterior of the Eureka Tower. At almost 300 meters high, this skyscraper offers incredible views from its observation deck. Just outside the city center in inner suburbs like Fitzroy, Carlton and St Kilda, blocks of attached Victorian terraces with wrought iron lacework delighted me with their old-world charm. And the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition, remains an outstanding symbol of the city's 19th century pride and confidence.
