[2025 Gero ] Travel Guide for Gero Onsen (Updated Jul)

Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs! I visited Gero while traveling to Nagoya. Actually, this was my second visit. :) During my stay in Gero, I stayed at the Yamagataya Ryokan, which offers stunning river views from the rooms and serves delicious food—truly a great value accommodation! I tried breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Yamagataya. Breakfast was a clean and traditional Japanese meal, while lunch and dinner were served as kaiseki course meals. The upgraded Hida beef shabu-shabu I had for lunch was so delicious it brought tears to my eyes. 🥹🤤 The ryokan features both a large public bath and private baths, allowing you to choose according to your preference. I thought Mt. Fuji was beautiful enough until I went to Toyama❗❗❗ Toyama, not Mt. Fuji! It's an underrated little treasure town! Located in central Japan, it includes Asahi Town, Nyuzen Town, Uozu City and Kurobe City. The continuous snow-capped mountains wrap around this small town. You can see the snow-capped mountains, the sea style, and the tram style at the same time. It is not inferior to Mount Fuji at all. It is also a must-shoot location for many photographers 📸 When you come to Japan The most unmissable stop in Toyama is Yuqing Coast, which faces the sea on one side and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains on three sides🏔️. It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. We also visited the Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional houses covered in snow ❄️ a must-see for winter photography enthusiasts. 📍 Kamiichinomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0846 Hida Folk Village 📍1-590 Kamiokamoto-machi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0055 We also visited Shirakawa-go, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage village. The sight of the gassho-zukuri houses blanketed in snow was absolutely surreal. We explored the village and climbed up to the Shiroyama Viewpoint, which offers the best panoramic view of the entire village. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. GEROGERO BUTTER STAND GeroGero Butter Stand 〒509-2207 Gifu Prefecture, Gero City, Yunoshima 571-2 Business Hours: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Introducing a must-visit spot when you travel to Gero Onsen! At GeroGero Butter Stand, they sell butter sandwiches, food, drinks, and souvenirs made with locally sourced Gero milk. Located in the Gero Onsen town, the cute yellow exterior stands out! I immediately tried the butter soy sauce rice ball that I had been curious about, and the rich butter matched perfectly with the grilled rice ball. It was so delicious that I went back the next day to have it again. You can also enjoy your food while soaking in the milk-colored foot bath with cute calves! Be sure to visit when you go to Gero Onsen.

If you take the train from Nagoya in central Japan for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, you will arrive at Gero, a hot spring town that is considered one of the '3 major hot springs in Japan'. I don't think you need to visit Gero if you don't go on a hot spring trip to Gero. I went for 1 night and 2 days, but you can enjoy a Gero trip with a full schedule, including hot springs, gassho village, and souvenirs, even in a day.

Gassho Village has houses built in the style of a gassho roof, like Shirakawa-go, and inside them you can see and enter various exhibits. Among them, the long slide is recommended!! It costs 100 yen per trip, but some people may think that paying 100 yen to slide down a slide is a bit much. But!! Strolling around Gero Onsen A short break at a shop called "Mori no Komichi". Hida milk gelato + melon bread 540 yen A large gelato was served, sandwiched between warm melon bread. I went to Un du plaisir, a crepe shop in Gero Onsen. ⁡ I wanted to eat a frog🐸 crepe, but it was sold out🥹. ⁡ So I had a simple strawberry🍓 and banana🍌 crepe. ⁡ The dough is soft. The cream seems to be whipped. The price is really reasonable👍 I think it's a good place to eat while walking around Gero Onsen. The big building next to it is the tourist information center, so be sure to stop by there. ⁡ Next time I come, I'd like to try the simple crepe dough without whipped cream. #GeroEating #GeroOnsen

Walking around Gero Onsen Found a Japanese sweets shop. A Japanese sweets shop called Takekawa. The shop had an atmosphere that made it seem like there were no customers at all. But the Japanese sweets were delicious. Maybe it's in the top three things I've eaten while walking around. ⁡ This time I bought a set for 800 yen. It had four pieces. #Nagoya Sakura Nagoya plus a three-day and two-night bike tour around Lake Biwa. The cherry blossoms around Lake Biwa are in full bloom. The cycling process is very enjoyable. Taking the limited express train from Nagoya, you can reach Gero Onsen Station in about 1.5 hours. As soon as you step off the train, the air is filled with a faint sulfur scent, instantly relaxing you. The "Gero Onsen Gassho Village" sign and the adorable frog mascot (the Japanese pronunciation of Gero resembles "Gero," the sound of a frog croak) immediately set the mood for sightseeing. Walking along the Hida River, you’ll soon arrive at the heart of the hot spring town. Whether couples or elderly pairs, everyone stops to soak their feet and chat. I spent some time at "Sagi-no-Ashi-Yu," where the water temperature was just right, and I felt completely warmed up as I soaked. Nighttime in the Onsen Town: Romance in tranquility As night falls, lanterns light up the old street, creating an atmosphere even more charming than during the day. Strolling in the streets wearing the yukata provided by the inn feels like stepping back in time.
