If you ask me what food in Hakodate, Hokkaido, is not often mentioned by tourists but deeply rooted in people's hearts, I will say without hesitation: "Hasegawa Shoten's やきり (grilled bird)!" But don't be fooled by the literal meaning, the "grilled bird" here is actually mostly pork skewers! This misplaced naming is part of Hokkaido's local culture, and it also adds a layer of fun and mystery to this store.
Hasegawa Shoten was originally a long-established local canteen, and later became famous for barbecue. The first time I went there, it was 7 o'clock in the evening, and I saw people queuing from a distance. At that time, I thought it was a newly opened dessert shop. When I got closer, I found that it was actually local residents who came to buy skewers. Many people even ate while walking after getting the bag. The aroma and heat spread with the winter night air, making people swallow their saliva instantly.
I ordered the most popular "Salt Pork Skewers" and a classic "Soy-Grilled Chicken Skewers". When you bite it, the pork is slightly charred on the outside, but the meat juice is still retained inside. The combination of charcoal aroma and salt is simply perfect. The soy-Grilled taste is a mixture of salty and sweet, which goes well with wine. What's more exaggerated is that a skewer starts at only 100 yen, and eating five skewers is only the price of a cup of Starbucks. The price is affordable, but the taste makes me miss it to this day.
What impressed me most was not only that the food was delicious, but that this store seemed to be like a soul corner guarding the city's late-night snack culture. You can see office workers swiping their phones while waiting, and you can also see mothers buying several skewers to take home for their children to eat, and old men chewing the charcoal grilled taste while talking about the past. These scenes make people feel that "this is the daily life in Hokkaido" more than any high-end restaurant.
If you come to Hakodate and only eat seafood bowls or desserts, it's a pity. You must set aside an evening to walk or take a car to Hasegawa Shoten to experience this "inconspicuous but amazing" real local delicacy. Remember, it will be sold out if you come too late, so it is recommended to come in the evening for the safest time.
The conclusion is: this is not just a midnight snack, it is a bite of authentic Hokkaido memory. If you love charcoal grilled skewers and like to discover hidden snacks on the road, Hasegawa Shoten will definitely make you a regular customer and linger in your dreams.
