OMG, Harbin Has THIS? How did I not know about it before?
Everybody visits Harbin for the Ice and Snow Festival, but there's also magic in the off-season.
I came here during the summer and found a hidden gem which hardly anyone talks about: Harbin Grand Theater.
📍About Harbin Grand Theater:
Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, Harbin Grand Theater is a breathtaking architecture masterpiece inspired by the city's snowy landscapes and bending rivers. It hosts world-class performances of classical music, opera, ballet and contemporary plays. It offers a rooftop walkway with panoramic views of the city and the Songhua river for free. The theater is surrounded by protected wetlands that are central to the local wildlife. So if you're also a nature enthusiast, this is the right place for you.
🗺️ Location:
It's located on Cultural Center Island, opposite Sun Island. You can get there by metro from Sun Island (Line 2- Sun Island station) or by taxi. Take into account that you'll have to walk 20 min from Sun Island Station to get there. The walk along the riverside is very pleasant.
TIP: Come at sunset. The night illumination is just gorgeous!
Harbin is more than ice and snow, it's a vibrant metropolis where history, art and natural beauty blend gracefully. 🙌🌲 ⛪ 🎶

Lotus Blooms in Full Splendor
The lotus pond at Harbin Cultural Center is vast and currently in full bloom. Strolling along the boardwalk amidst the lotus leaves, you'll encounter deep pink, light pink, and white blossoms over 20cm in diameter. Half-opened flowers reveal glimpses of tender yellow pistils swaying in the breeze, while delicate buds blush charmingly. Fresh green lotus seed pods dot the scenery, and expansive emerald leaves stretch gracefully - a perfect summer tableau!
Beyond the lotus viewing, you might spot speedy little ducks skimming across the water or lively chipmunks hopping through the woods.
Harbin Cultural Center is an open scenic area with free 24-hour access, though morning visits are ideal for lotus viewing.
For drivers: Navigate to the intersection of Grand Theatre Street and Theatre Second Road, then head east on Theatre Second Road. Parking spaces along the roadside fill quickly - grab any available spot, then walk just meters toward the water for breathtaking views. Alternatively, head south on Grand Theatre Street for another expansive lotus display.
[!][!]Important: No parking on Grand Theatre Street - temporary street parking is permitted along Theatre Second Road only.

(Wetland Park, Grand Theater)
Harbin Life (Wetland Park, Grand Theater)
Now in Harbin, I continue to look for autumn colors. The weather has been sunny and the temperature has been comfortable recently. I am seizing this season to record all the beautiful things I have discovered in Harbin.
The main check-in place today was originally the Harbin Grand Theater, but I didn’t stay there for long. Instead, I found the Cultural Center Wetland Park next to the theater fun.
The Grand Theatre is quite far from where I live, and requires two subway lines and a taxi. After getting off the car, I saw the Songhua River. Many fishermen were fishing by the river. Some trees had turned yellow. Since it was noon, the photos taken were brighter. Walking over is the Harbin Grand Theater. The building is indescribably beautiful in person. It’s a pity that I couldn’t visit the interior of the building. It was open to the public for free during the National Day a few days ago. The theater was surrounded by empty space, the sun was so hot that we couldn't even open our eyes, and the fence of the building next to it was under construction, so we decided to change places and go to the wetland park.
This wetland park is home to many birch trees with golden leaves that look beautiful in the sun. There are many unknown birds swimming and catching fish in the wetland, reeds are swaying, and the woods in the distance are yellow and green. Their shadows are clearly rippling in the water. The beauty formed by nature is just different.
Walking along the walking path of the wetland park, there are many people fishing by the river.
SHELBY MCLAUGHLIN
Harbin Cultural Center Wetland Park
The designer proposed to transform this degraded wetland into a purification area for rainwater and tap water tailwater to improve the original wetland habitat. At the same time, it can be used as an urban park to meet the growing outdoor recreation needs of citizens.
A series of ecological depressions will be built around the wetland park, which has stormwater regulation and water purification functions. Stormwater runoff generated by the southern cultural center and the northern urban area will be collected here and purified.
The floating link and water-resilient park configures adaptive vegetation so that the waterfront greenery can cope with the water level difference of up to 2 meters between the dry and rainy seasons. Vegetation above the water line is left to nature, while artificial meadows are designed in the higher areas between the native trees.
