Maldives: Dream destination that won’t break the bank!
I’ve just returned from a dream holiday in the Maldives. The Maldives far exceeded my expectations. I stayed on local islands where accommodation is really nice and super affordable. During my holiday, I stayed on four different islands and visited two other islands.
My first night was on Male city Island, Male is a vibrant and energetic city with great restaurants and bars.
The next day I took the local ferry to Himandhoo Island which has a really relaxed and chilled vibe. There were very few tourists there and I spent three days really enjoying the beach and swimming in the beautiful sea. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and the food at the restaurant was delicious.
Then I took the local ferry to Thoddoo Island, this island has beautiful beaches and also very good snorkelling, when snorkelling here I encountered a group of five turtles which was really amazing.
On my way to Thoddoo Island I spent the afternoon at Rasdhoo Island, to be honest, not my favourite. It seemed very touristy and didn’t seem to have as nice a vibe as the other islands I visited. However, it did seem to have some really nice restaurants.
While staying on Thoddoo Island I took excursions to see sharks, stingrays and manta rays. These were all really amazing experiences. While doing one of these excursions, we spent a little bit of time on Mathiveri Island, although I didn’t get to spend very long on the island I really loved the vibe of this island. It didn’t seem too touristy either. The beaches and water looked amazing. If I ever come back to the Maldives I would definitely stay on this island.
The last island I stayed on was Ukulhas, the snorkelling from the beach here was really great. I saw so many fish of all different shapes colours and sizes however it was probably my least favourite of all the islands I stayed on, as there is a lot of construction work going on. They seem to be building many hotels, I think in future the island will be overrun with tourists and will lose its authentic feel. However, it was one of the best islands for snorkelling.
I had a really amazing time in the Maldives and I really hope that someday I can go back!
