#chinatrip The Huanglongjiuzhai station, which opened on September 1, is the newest station providing direct access to Jiuzhaigou, along with Songpan station. Previously, travelers had to take the high-speed train to Zhenjiangguan and then drive 4-5 hours to reach Jiuzhaigou. With this new station, travel time is reduced by about 2 hours, allowing for more time to explore Huanglong National Park. If tickets to Huanglongjiuzhai are sold out, you can opt to stop at Songpan and take a bus or Didi to either Huanglong National Park or Jiuzhaigou, and of course the major highlight of the journey from Huanglongjiuzhai to Jiuzhaigou is the stunning scenery along the way. Huanglong Valley is a north-south valley in Yucui Mountain, separated from Jiuzhaigou by a mountain. However, due to the obstruction of snow-capped mountains, it is necessary to take a detour of 100 kilometers by road to reach it. The wonder of this ditch is the rocks at the bottom of the ditch, which are crystal clear and smooth, similar to the stalactites in the limestone caves. The rocks are ups and downs, winding along the ditch, like a yellow dragon circling upwards. Huanglong's unique scenery earns it the reputation of "Huanglong is the best in the world". The Five Color Pools, with 693 pools, is the largest group of pools in Huanglong Valley, and also the largest and highest-altitude open-air travertine pools in the world. The Five Color Pools have low embankments and are well-arranged. The pools are overflowing with water. From a distance, the pools look like jade plates. Under the sunlight, the pools are white, purple, blue, and green in different shades, colorful and extremely beautiful.

We took the cable car up and walked down to see the colourful ponds and waterfalls. There was a long queue for the cable car but the line moves fast. Got the tickets on trip.com and used our passport for entry (similar to most attactions in China that's booked via trip.com. Try to book the tickets early to get the scenic bus tickets within the park, as it is limited to 5000 tickets per day. Otherwise, you will need to walk about an hour on the boardwalk to the colorful ponds. Nevertheless, it's still quite a pleasant walk. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking involved and prepare raincoat and shoe covers as the weather on the mountain changes fast. We reached there at about 10am and spent about 4 hours there.

The colorful terraced pools are the main event they’re super unique and honestly kinda hypnotizing. You’ll just keep snapping pics and staring because it doesn’t look real. The walk up is a bit of a workout, not gonna lie, especially if you’re not used to the altitude. But there’s a cable car if you’re feeling lazy or just want to save your legs for exploring at the top. Totally worth it either way. What’s awesome is that every season gives you a different vibe, green and bright in summer, golden in autumn, snowy and quiet in winter. It’s peaceful, clean and feels like something out of a fantasy movie. If you’re in Sichuan and want to see something that feels out of this world without actually leaving Earth, Huanglong’s got you covered. Just bring water and don’t rush it.

Both the colorful dreamscape of Jiuzhaigou and the fairyland of Huanglong are breathtaking natural landscapes bestowed upon Sichuan by nature. I visited the Huanglong pools in early May. It was the day after the national holiday so there were not that many people. Key points: - took the train from Chengdu to Huanglongjiuzaigou, approx 2.5h - At the train station, there are plenty of taxis waiting, and there is also a bus. I chose to book a shuttle from the train station via Trip.com because 1) it was more comfortable (modern van) and 2) It was convenientas they waited for me at Huanglongand later on drove to Jiuzhaigou. This way I could keep the suitcase in the van - I bought the ticket for Huanglong directly at the entrance, it includes the cable car up. I thought I would walk all the way up but I'm glad I didn't , it's VERY high up and steep!! - At the top of cable car there is a minibus that takes you closer to the scenic spot. You have to pay extra but it saves 30 mins of walking. Optional. - The pools in May are still mostly dry... a few were full and beautiful , but I wish I had come later in the year. If you are planning to come October-March, I recommend skipping it. - On the way down, you can walk down (lots of steps but you see more pools), or choose to take cable car again. Total visit took me around 3h. You can go quicker if you take cable car both ways. #huanglong

Come visit Huanglong during April, where there is snowfall and more space to view the beautiful scenery! Due to the cold weather, there are less tourists which made the walk around the scenic area a lot more enjoyable! There were many rest areas selling oxygen tanks for those who are experiencing altitude sickness and need a refill. However if you want to see more of the colourful ponds, come during Summer when they have filled up!

I experienced the effects of high altitude sickness during my visit to Huanglong scenic park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with beautiful travertine pools, adorable wildlife and awe-inspiring majestic Snow-capped peaks. It started with a mild headache as I ascended the trail towards the Travertine pools - the highlight of the park and the highest viewpoint. I had an oxygen canister on the way down, but my condition progressed into nausea, vomiting, feeling burning all over. Luckily, we had a private hire driver waiting for us at the exit so we could leave as soon as possible. My condition subsided after returning and staying at a lower altitude for a period of time. Also, visiting in the Spring time on 3 April 2025, the waterfalls were either dry or frozen 😆 Only a small patch of pools remained but I was still enthralled by the snowy landscape and uniqueness of this experience.
