INDEPENDENCE PALACE This is the place marking the complete victory of anti-American resistance war, libration of the South and national reunification. Originally called Norodom Palace and Palace of Indochina Governor General, the Independence Palace was built in 1868 and inaugurated in 1871. After 1954, Ngo Dinh Diem, South Viet Nam’s Presdent, and his family lived and worked in the Norodom Palace. He decided to renamed it the Independence Palace. In 1962, this palace was heavily destroyed by bombs. President Diem commanded the remains to be destroyed and to rebuild the palace It was designed by Western-trained architect Ngo Viet Thu. Went into the Reunification Palace to do a tour visit and you would be able to see a lot of history about the reunification of Vietnam. It was a big palace that consist of a few levels (I forget how many levels there are) but you can take a lot of nice photos in the palace. (Good for your next Tinder profile pic) You will be able to view the President’s office, conference hall, the minister’s cabinet room, and the Banquet hall (of course there’s more room but I can’t recall the names, go see yourself). Someone asked me if they are able to sit on the chair but sadly you can’t as they are items that need to be protected. In 1975, a North Vietnamese tank crashed into the main gate of the Independence Palace effectively ending the Vietnam War. Time seems to have “frozen” here - two tanks that participated in the storming of the palace are still standing on the territory, and an exact copy of a military helicopter is installed on the roof of the building.
