With its highest peak at 585 meters, the mountain range provides an exceptional opportunity to view the landscape of northern and northwestern New Territories. Kai Kung Leng, meaning “the rooster mountain range” in Chinese, had another name as Kwai Kok Shan in the ancient records on Hong Kong. “Kwai” refers to the laurel trees that grew abundantly in this mountain range. “Kok,” meaning angles, refers to the two angular mountain tops. In the ancient books, Kwai Kok Shan was the name for the whole mountain range. The taller eastern summit was Tai Lo Tin, and the western lower peak was Kai Kung Shan; together they were known as Kwai Kok Shan. The Tang’s of Kam Tin believe that this mountain range is the origin of the clan’s good feng shui, the ancestral dragon that blesses the clan. Even at mid-range we saw all of Kam Tin and Yuen Long in the southwest. It felt like we could reach out and touch those human settlements on our fingertips. Hong Kong is a well-developed city, heavily populated even in the rural areas, with never-ending human footprints on its terrain. But in the mountains we see the mountain ranges rolling to eternity, a view so grand that the human footprints are dwarfed, perhaps into a humility that reflects human beings’ true position in the created order. I would say this hike at Kai Kung Leng tops one of the toughest hikes I have done so far. Quite a number of experienced hikers have ranked it 4 stars out of 5. The route is very easy, and the fun of the mountains and fields lies in the different scenery you can experience on different routes. You can see the bustling skyscrapers of Shenzhen in the distance, and the tranquility of the traditional Yuen Long villages of Hong Kong up close. In addition, there are large rocks and meadows stretching for 2-3 km along the ridgeline. It is indeed a picture of the fusion of city and nature. The weather on the day of departure was not very good, but it saved us from the pain of being exposed to the sun on the ridgeline. This route has no supplies along the way, with a total length of about 7.54 km and an elevation gain of less than 700 m. It is considered the closest and easiest route on the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The highest altitude is 564 m, and the total climb for the day is about 604 m. Enter the first section of the climb from the trailhead, which is about 2.11 km long and has an elevation gain of about 374 m; the second section is about 2.15 km long and has an elevation gain of about 189 m. Route: Futian Port - Yuen Long - Fung Kat Heung Road Entrance - Kuk Po Keng Yuen Long Section - Kuk Po Keng Sheung Shui Section - Sheung Shui - Luohu Port. Note: I didn't follow the recommended route from Futian Port directly to the mountain. Instead, I went to Yuen Long market to eat and replenish before taking an Uber to the Fung Kat Heung trailhead.
