🌋Hiking into the Underworld – Mount Ijen’s Blue Fire & Sulfur Soul
The Mount Ijen hike begins in darkness, but don’t let the quiet fool you — this is one of the most extreme and unforgettable volcano treks in Indonesia. We started at 1:00 AM with only headlamps lighting the rocky path. After an hour of steady uphill hiking, we reached the rim… and then descended into the crater to witness the famous blue fire, a natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas. The eerie glow flickered like ghostly flames against the pitch-black walls. It felt like walking through another dimension.
As sunrise approached, the blue fire faded — but Ijen wasn’t done. The crater revealed a toxic turquoise lake, one of the most acidic in the world, surrounded by mist and the distant clink of sulfur miners hard at work. Ijen is harsh, beautiful, and humbling. Bring a proper gas mask, warm clothes, and respect for the people who mine here daily.

DON’T GO TO BALI…GO TO JAVA INSTEAD
Bali has long been marketed as a tropical paradise, but in recent years, it has become a victim of its own popularity. What was once a serene island retreat is now plagued by overcrowded beaches, traffic-choked roads, overdeveloped resorts, and inflated prices. The charm that once made Bali unique is increasingly lost beneath a flood of mass tourism and commercialization. While there are still pockets of beauty, the island is often overwhelmed by visitors seeking the same curated Instagram moments, leading to a homogenized experience that feels less like authentic Indonesia and more like a tourist bubble.
In contrast, Java, the heart of Indonesia, remains vastly underappreciated despite offering some of the most magnificent landscapes and cultural experiences in Southeast Asia. Java is home to awe-inspiring volcanic scenery such as Mount Bromo’s otherworldly caldera, the hauntingly blue flames of Ijen crater, and the lush highlands around Dieng Plateau. These destinations are far less crowded and offer a much more intimate, raw connection to nature.
Moreover, Java is rich in cultural heritage, from the ancient temples of Borobudur and Prambanan to the vibrant local traditions of Yogyakarta. Traveling through Java provides a more diverse and authentic picture of Indonesia, including its people, food, landscapes, and history.
Rather than following the tourist crowds to Bali, more travelers should consider exploring Java. It is a land of dramatic contrasts where adventure and authenticity await those willing to step off the beaten path.

Catching Sunrise on Top of Ijen Mountain
#springwander Witnessing the sunrise from the summit of Ijen Mountain is a breathtaking experience like no other. As the first light breaks over the horizon, it paints the sky in hues of orange, pink, and gold, casting a magical glow over the turquoise acidic crater lake below. The crisp mountain air, the stunning panoramic views, and the surreal beauty of the blue fire phenomenon make the challenging trek worthwhile. Standing above the clouds, you’ll feel a deep sense of awe and accomplishment. Would you hike Ijen for this unforgettable sunrise? Tag your adventure buddies and start planning!

Hiking Kawah Ijen, Surabaya 😍
The Ijen Volcano Complex is a group of composite volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency in East Java, Indonesia.
Hiking is one of the most popular activities on Mount Ijen, and our tour includes the guide fee and entrance fee. We will begin the hike at 1 am. Please make sure to bring necessary hiking gear, such as headlamps, suitable sports shoes, a raincoat, and some food to keep your energy up.
At Kawah Ijen, you can catch the blue fire before 4 am, so make sure not to be late, as it may not be visible after that time. However, you will still be able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.
The trail can be a bit slippery, especially if it’s raining, so please be careful when hiking down.

KAWAH IJEN , INDONESIA

Come see some of the world's most spectacular blue fires and most acidic lakes.
🌋This is a volcano called Kawah Ijen on Java Island, Indonesia.
It is a popular volcano in Indonesia for many reasons.
1. Blue Lake: It is said to be the most acidic lake in the world. I was surprised that the beautiful lake that looks blue was more acidic than I thought.
2. Blue Fire: It is said that there are only two places in the world where you can see Blue Fire. It is said that it is possible in Indonesia and Ethiopia. However, it is said that Indonesia is the best place to see it.
3. Sulfur Mining: It is said that this is the only place in the world that still mines and sells sulfur. Now, sulfur is said to be made chemically.
If you go to a place where you can trek from dawn, you can see Blue Fire, sunrise, and a panoramic view.

Now volcano trekking
I went on the famous Ijen Volcano Trekking along with the Promo Volcano Trekking in Java Island right next to Bali Island in Indonesia.
I applied for the tour after arriving there and went.
It is a course that starts at dawn, trekking, sunrise, and volcano viewing, and then comes down.
It is a fantastic otherworldly landscape. Highly recommended!!!

Kawah Ijen sulfur lake
#tripแจกลด
🩵Kawah Ijen🩵Kawah Ijen✨ Blue lava and sulfur lake, a popular place that tourists like to visit at least once, both locals and international tourists. We are the same. We started walking up at 1 am and arrived at around 3 am. It took about 2 hours to walk on a gentle slope to a very steep slope of 45 degrees. For those who can't handle it, there are horses and cars to take you up and down. The weather depends on how cooperative the day is. When we reached the top, we couldn't go down to see the flaming lava. The wind was very strong and the fog was thick. We couldn't see the way. With such strong winds, we had to find a hole to hide from the wind. When the sky started to brighten, we were able to walk up to see the sulfur lake. This area smells very bad of sulfur. We had to wear a mask. The trees around here look like they're burned all the time, turning them black.
When we got down, we saw some workers, some locals, digging up sulfur. Some people sell the mineral to tourists. Some people carve it into various shapes. Below, they can set up tents and there are restaurants and bathrooms. It's very convenient.
❤️For those who like this kind of adventure Don't miss another spot when you come to Indonesia❤️
🧳Travel🧳 Take the Surabaya or Bali airport, rent a car to Kawah Ijen. There is an entrance fee to visit on weekdays and holidays.

Challenge to Ijen crater-Banyuwangi
The Ijen volcano complex is a group of volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia. It is known for its blue fire, acidic crater lake, and labour-intensive sulfur mining.
.
The hike to the crater needs 2-2,5 hours especially for those who are not used to hike and u will need another 30 mins to see the blue fire….There are two ways to reach to the summit. u can go there on foot or u can rent the cart…so u will just sit down and will be pushed and pulled by 2 person. The cost varies….it us around 1.2 million for return if u start from the gate
.
The gate is opened at 2 am and we have to show the health medical letter and the ticket costs 5K idr for local tourist and 100K for foreigner.for weekends, it cost 7.500 IDR For local tourist and 150K for foreigner
.
Having walked for almost 2.5 hours, i reached the summit ….yeay and hard walk pays off….i see a very beautiful and stunning scenery there….it’s worth it…..
.
What a beautiful scenery it is….don’t miss it…..
