[2025 Kota Kinabalu Hotels] Travel Guide for Mercure Kota Kinabalu City Centre (Updated Jul)

Before checking in, I was a little worried after seeing the mixed reviews, but I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite. The space was enough, the place was clean, the terrace had a sea view, the kitchenette was sufficient, the front desk staff was very nice, and the hotel was conveniently located. It only takes about 5 to 6 minutes to walk to Fuyuan. I will stay here again next time I visit KK

At RM160/night, this was a real deal! Mercure KK’s location is truly perfect for excursions on foot and exploring KK city centre. Near Gaya Street Market, Jalan Dewan cafes and bars, Suria Sabah shopping mall and the Jesselton Jetty, this hotel really is strategically located! They have a number of offerings and this was the most economical. The beds were great and the room has pretty much all that travellers need. We had a welcome drink at the poolside bar too! The layout of our room however was a little strange, with the tv facing a blank space. There was not sofa or bed that would make watching TV an activity of choice. The beds actually face the bathroom/wash area and the frosting is pretty light. We overcame this by facing the wall while one of us was showering 😂 The open space between the washroom door and the ceiling gave opportunity to share ‘sounds and scents’ from within 🙈 Such a layout seems to be common in newer hotels and may be a bit of a challenge for friends or colleagues travelling together. 🗺️🗺️ [Itinerary] Day 1: Flying from Singapore Changi Airport, direct flight about 1hour 50mins to Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI). Take Grab car or pre-booked airport transportation to Hotel. Walk around the area near Jesselton Point Ferry terminal, there is a Jesselton Duty Free mall, if you would like purchase some goodies. There is a upside down museum to have some fun, kids will love to explore. Day 2: Day trip to Kundasang. Chartered a private van to Kundasang to appreciate the beauty of Mount Kota Kinabalu, the Sacred mountain of the natives. The objective of the day trip is not to climb mount Kinabalu, for hikers and climbers need to book different arrangements with agencies. The weather is generally cooling and unpredictable over the mountain range, please bring your jacket or raincoats. Along the way can drop by the “little Switzerland” Desa Dairy farm, taste the Gelato, then feed baby cows and baby goats, the activities will be suitable for children. If you are lucky, you will get to see the biggest parasitic flower in the world- rafflesia. Breath in and out when crossing the Poring Canopy walkway and then soak in Poring hot springs to wash your fatigue away. Day 3: Island hopping to Sapi island and Manukan. Depart from Jesselton point Ferry terminal, about 25 min boat ride to Sapi island for snorkeling and sunbathing. Then move on to Manukan Island, about 10 mins boat ride from Sapi island. Manukan island has even cleaner beach and clearer water compared to Sapi, and there are resorts on the island if you would like to stay overnight. Day 4: City Tour, chartered private van, visiting Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (floating mosque), Atkinson clock tower, Signal Hill observation Tower, Anjung Kinabalu/Filipino Market. Dine in at Welcome seafood restaurant. Day 5: Chartered transport from hotel to airport, taking direct flight back to Changi Airport. A wide variety of fruits, bread, hot dishes, and drinks are available, making it hard to choose. I stayed here for three nights. The front desk staff was really friendly and I thought the hotel was clean overall. However, the shower filter got dirty quickly. I guess that can't be helped because it's Southeast Asia.

A little late post but I thoroughly enjoyed this 5 course dinner being served at the Compass Restaurant - which is located on the 25th Floor of Mercure Hotel KKC. Situated by the pool, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the city and ocean. We started our course with a simple yet tasty tomato bruschetta followed by a prawn cocktail with avocado tapenade. We were then served a minestrone soup (not pictured) with Parmesan garlic bread followed the main of a grilled beef medallion which was medium rare and flavoured to perfection. Finally, dessert was a chocolate panna cotta served with vanilla ice cream and a raspberry sauce. Two thumbs up to the chef for providing a delicious meal and another two thumbs up to the hotel for the service and gorgeous view.
