Mostar - flying under the radar, but soon to be Europe’s hottest destination!
This beautiful bridge is the perfect backdrop for photographs whilst visiting the city. Try and grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants and cafe’s that line the river so that you can marvel at this view over lunch.
It’s devastating to think that the original bridge was destroyed in the Bosnian war back in 1993. But, using the same techniques and materials as those used for the construction of the original bridge, this bridge was rebuilt in 2004 - with the city of Mostar becoming a world heritage site a year later.
The bridge stands 24 metres above the water. Whilst there, you can watch people dive in; with some waiting on the bridge to do so once they’ve made enough money. Big tip - don’t try diving in yourself!
Just a short walk from Stari Most is the cute miniature version known as the Crooked Bridge. We stopped at the banks of the river for a bite to eat. Food and drink in Bosnia & Herzegovina is so cheap, and it is tasty stuff. A win-win all round.
Evidence of the Yugoslavian war is still on show in the city, in a much greater way than you’d find in Croatia or Montenegro. For example, you can see the sniper tower which was seized by the Croat army during the war. Across the way from this building is the Spanish square, which was built by the Bosnian government to honour the Spanish soldiers who died during the war. But then, in this same square, you can see the opulent Old Gymnasium. This was one of the oldest and most famous schools in the former Yugoslavia. This square is a stark reminder of the recent history and battles that this country has suffered.
After admiring the awesome statue of Bruce Lee, it was nearly time to move on to our next destination. But before doing so, we checked out some of the impressive street art that Mostar has to offer.

The Leap of Mostar: An Afternoon Between History and Courage
Today, I arrived in Mostar, a historic town in Bosnia and Herzegovina that blends Eastern and Western cultures. The most captivating sight before me is the elegant yet sturdy Stari Most (Old Bridge), spanning the clear, emerald-green Neretva River, as if it were a piece of history itself.
On the bridge, a crowd of travelers and locals gathers, their eyes fixed on a young man standing at the edge. It is said that once he collects €50 in tips, he will leap from the bridge, over 20 meters high, into the icy waters below. In that moment, everyone holds their breath, followed by enthusiastic applause and exclamations. This act is not just a display of courage but also a reflection of Mostar's spirit—a choice to leap and be reborn despite a turbulent history.
In the heat, a scoop of local ice cream offers the perfect refreshment, sweet with a hint of fruitiness. The cobblestone streets, the minaret of the mosque, and the narrow alleys filled with copperware and handmade crafts all feel like scenes from a movie, enchanting in every way.
Mostar is the kind of city that makes you pause and linger, yet leaves you wanting to depart with a heart full of memories.

Old Town of Mostar 🌟
#cityplaybook
A town full of history and culture, with a charming old town in a breathtaking location, friendly and hospitable people, excellent food, budget-friendly costs, and plenty of interesting and different things to do in the surroundings. Walking through the old town of Mostar will make you doubt that you are really in Europe. Minarets from the various mosques are always in view, and there's the periodic call to prayer. The Ottoman influence is so strong that at times, I felt like I was in Turkey.
1. Stari Most (Old Bridge)
The town's postcard and one of the main (if not the main) tourist attractions in Bosnia Herzegovina, Stari Most, or the old bridge, is worth a visit in Mostar. The history of the bridge over the Neretva River and of the town are so intimately connected that Mostar means "bridge keeper."
2. Crooked Bridge
As if it were a miniature of the Stari Most, the Crooked Bridge, built around 1558, crosses the river Radobolja, a small tributary of the Neretva, a few meters from the Stari Most.
3. Kujundžiluk Street Bazaar
Crossing Stari Most, you will follow a narrow street, surrounded by little shops on both sides and, in some sections, with views to the left of the Neretva River.
It could be the typical souvenir shopping street found in any historic city in Europe, but the difference here is that it's not just any European street. The houses, mostly reconstructed, evoke the ottoman medieval period, with their stone roofs and characteristic architecture.
4. Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque
An architectural gem dating back to the 17th century. Step inside, breathe in the peaceful atmosphere and appreciate the beauty of the details.
5. Mostar Museum
6. Get lost in the medieval-Ottoman alleys
