I always thought it wouldn't be as big as a sundial when I saw it in pictures, but it's actually as big as a duplex. If you're curious about Jagakru, be sure to go see Jagakru on display in the basement of the Palace Museum^^ #Exhibition I visited the Palace Museum once in February 2022 and once in the fall of 2020. In 2020, there was a special exhibition of relics. It was an exhibition of Western porcelain used by the Joseon royal family in the late Joseon Dynasty. I visited the Hello, Peony exhibition held at the National Palace Museum of Korea! It is operated by a reservation system, and 30 additional people can enter per hour on site! Peonies are flowers that symbolize wealth and honor, and they are said to have been used often by the royal family! I was able to see peony paintings, clothes with peonies, accessories, and porcelain! I think the exhibition was even more attractive because it had pretty pictograms! Seoul is an absolutely incredible city and everyone should get the chance to experience it, it can be a super expensive place at times but there are ways to make it a more budget friendly city. I was surprised at how easy it is to stick to a budget, and the different price options available. ⭐️Airport - Most international flights now land at Incheon airport which is over an hours drive from the city, so this makes taxis very expensive. The best option is the airport express train that goes form the airport and stops at about 4 different stations in Seoul, each of them connected to different parts of the metro. You can book online in advance but for certain times, best option is the ticket machines in the terminal - but they only take cash! ⭐️Hotels - Western hotels can be expensive here and the rooms can be a lot smaller than you are used to, making them feel even more expensive. However the local chains such as Homes Stay, Lotte Hotels, Le collective are reasonably priced without sacrificing amenities. I also advice checking home stays and rentals here as they are surprisingly affordable. I would recommend the Itaewon district for accommodation as it’s close to the metro and has great food nearby. ⭐️Transport - The metro network in Seoul Is amazing and very convenient, there are main metro lines through the tourist spots and also into the suburbs that offer the cheaper hotels and home stays. You can get a travel pass for day or multi day if you are staying longer, there are easy access machines in most train stations. There are also good local buses and the bus stops are very easy to understand. ⭐️Food - Just like Japan the convenience stores here are on another level and are great for snacks, drinks and coffee. You will need to go just to see the wide range they have on offer, they also have lots of hot food options and microwaves to cook them. Great way to eat cheap! They have 7/11, lawson, family mart and the local chain GS25 & CU Great areas for food are Itaewon, Myeong-dong & Gangnam. ⭐️Attractions - They can get very busy with the recent boom in travel to Seoul so book ahead and try and avoid the busy times. #cityplaybook If you're looking for an amazing, free way to dive into Korea's royal past, the National Palace Museum of Korea is a must-see. Tucked right by Gyeongbokgung Palace, this museum shows off the rich history of the Joseon royal family. I went thinking I'd just quickly see a special exhibit, but I ended up totally amazed by the main displays! This museum is fantastic because it's completely free! It's open almost every day, with longer hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays (until 9 PM). They only close three days a year, so it's super easy to visit. With so many cool old things to see, you really have no excuse not to go. Plus, they have a nice café (Cafe Sarang), a gift shop, and clean bathrooms. If you can't try traditional royal sweets elsewhere, Cafe Sarang offers some really pretty ones. The main exhibit, especially the "Royal Life + Joseon Kings" part on the second floor (where you walk in), is truly grand. You're immediately greeted by exquisite pieces like the daesamjak norigae, a large, fancy Korean ornament. You'll see beautiful things like Jinjujunang (Pearl Pouches) and detailed Garakji (Rings), showing off royal jewelry, and elegant Apkkoji (Hairpins) and different Binyeo (Hairpins), showing how royals did their hair. The grand Yeongchinwangbi's Jeogui (Ceremonial Robe), worn by queens, is fascinating because the patterns are woven into the fabric, not just stitched on. You'll also spot the incredibly heavy and fancy Daesumeori headpiece, covered in gold and jewels, and cute Cheongseok (Blue Shoes) that still look stylish today. The bright colors and gold designs of the Dangui (Ceremonial Topcoat) are a true work of art, and the pretty Bojagi (Wrapping Cloths) with awesome colors and patterns are like "Joseon's fancy wrapping paper." There are even special Norigae (Ornaments) with tassels made from single threads, and the mighty Myeonbok / Gujangbok, a ceremonial robe for kings. There's so much to see that you might not even get through it all in one visit! Even though it's over now, the "Court Ladies' Costumes" special exhibit (March 12 - May 11, 2025) was really neat. It featured clothes from the Uichinwang Royal Family, like Wonsam (Ceremonial Robes) and Seuran Chima (Skirts with Gold). I learned that the Daedae (Belt) had a hidden string to keep it from coming undone – smart! The detailed embroidery and unique, long Hwagwan (Flower Crowns) were also amazing. They had a great video that showed off all the little details even better than seeing them in person. So, whether you're at Gyeongbokgung Palace or just looking for a cool cultural trip, the National Palace Museum of Korea is a must-go. You can even imagine a "palace tour" from inside, so it's worth it even if you don't go into Gyeongbokgung itself. #ThailandFlightEvent I visited the Seoul National Palace Museum, and the experience of making a seal was really impressive. 🖋️ The experience started with an explanation from the staff, and the process of engraving my name on a stone seal was more difficult than I thought. It took a lot of strength in my hands and I had to concentrate to carve it precisely, but it was fun and satisfying to see my name being engraved one by one. 😊 That day, the museum was holding an exhibition of ‘Royal Joseon Packaging Art’, and I was amazed by the delicate aesthetic sense of the Joseon Dynasty while looking at the traditional wrapping cloths and box packaging methods. It was not just pretty, but I was also able to learn about the practicality and symbolism contained in them, so it was informative. 🎎 After experiencing and looking around the exhibition, I went outside and took a quick look at the Gyeongbokgung Palace scenery. #HawaiiFlightEvent The walking path from Gwanghwamun Square to Gyeongbokgung Palace was a strangely calming path even though it was in the middle of Seoul🌇🍃 As I walked along the path past the statue of King Sejong and the fluttering national flags, my steps naturally slowed down and my eyes looked up. In the scenery where the stone walls, fountains, people, and the sky all blended well, just walking was healing🚶♀️ Especially at sunset, the sight of the warm sunlight seeping into the palace walls was a scene that stayed in my heart longer than in a photo✨ I stopped by a cafe for a moment, walked again, and sat on a bench in front of the palace entrance to catch my breath. A walking path where you can feel both leisure and tradition in Seoul, it was a path that was more comforting than I thought if I walked for a while before going to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Not driving, traveling with my father who is over 60 years old. If you are going to Seoul for the first time, or planning to travel alone, this post is for your reference. The itinerary is suitable for people who want to see the history and culture, experience life in Seoul, and are not in a hurry to complete the itinerary, but not suitable for shopping people. —————————————————————————— The first card I recommend is the Climate Companion Card. [You can find it by searching on Google] This card allows you to choose from 1 to 7-day passes, which are valid for "subway in the Seoul area (within the metropolitan area), Seoul city-licensed buses, community buses (including late-night buses), and Dinglingling buses." A 7-day pass is only 20,000 won. Well worth it. (You can buy it directly at subway stations and convenience stores like 7-11!) After use, you can use it as a T-money card. The second card is the "wowpass card", which is suitable for transportation and ordinary food payments. It is similar to the Octopus card, but can be exchanged for foreign currency. It is easy to use when we take the subway outside the metropolitan area, buy things at convenience stores, and pay at restaurants. Note: 1. Generally, cash is required at night markets. 2. You can download the wowpass card apps first, use the electronic card or find out the location of the vending machine first, and make sure you will get off at Incheon Airport Terminal 1/2. You will have to queue up in long lines at Myeongdong and Hongdae subway stations. 3. Day 5 Morning: Go to Sanggal Station and take a bus to the Korean Folk Village. (I personally highly recommend this attraction, which is suitable for all ages. The rides are a must-have for children! Young people can play in the haunted house!) Afternoon: Take the bus to Hongdae Shopping Street and have dinner. Day 6 Morning: Check out, store luggage, and have lunch. Noon: Go to Jongmyo Shrine (under maintenance! Not recommended!), visit Changgyeonggung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Gyeongbokgung Palace (a must-go!), check in at Dongdaemun Design Plaza [Dongdaemun Market, closed on Sundays], pick up luggage, and go to the airport.
