Amongst Kyoto’s nearly endless sea of temples and shrines, it’s nice to experience something a little different. Nijō Castle is just that: something truly unique. We almost missed this experience, we had some extra time leftover in our day and walked right up to the gates with no reservations and got in just fine. The architecture of the castle walls inside and out are stunning; the attention to detail is unreal. History lovers will have plenty to admire as well, being that the shogun rule both started and ended in this very place. Note that no pictures are allowed inside the castle, just outside. Aside from exploring the castle, there are also beautiful gardens and ponds on the premises to admire. Overall, expect to spend a few hours here if you want to admire the castle at a comfortable pace.

The castle consists of two concentric rings (Kuruwa) of fortifications, the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace. It was built in 17th century and in use till 1939. Be prepared to spend a few hours if you want to have the full experience. It can be done within 1-2 hours but you definitely want to come back for more! My two-day journey in Kyoto was enriching and memorable, filled with explorations of the city’s renowned temples, gardens, and historical landmarks. Day One was dedicated to exploring the Arashiyama district, where I visited the iconic Bamboo Grove and Tenryu-ji Temple. The scenic walk along the Katsura River was particularly tranquil. The day concluded with a visit to Nijo Castle, which impressed with its elaborate paintings and architecture. Day Two started with an early visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of red torii gates that create a visually stunning landscape. The day continued with a stroll through the Gion district, known for its well-preserved machiya houses and the possibility of spotting a geiko or maiko in their traditional attire. I ended the day at Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, which was breathtaking at sunset. trip was a fantastic blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making Kyoto a city that truly captivates the spirit of traditional Japan.

Did you know that Nijo Castle is lit up at night? During the summer, digital fireworks and a summer festival are held, called the Summer Festival. I went there too! The entrance gate is stately and overwhelming. As soon as you enter, you are given a lantern for each group, and you can stroll around the castle. I never thought that Nijo Castle would be so overwhelming even at night... 😵 It was more impressive than I had imagined! It makes you feel like you've traveled back in time! At the end of the route, you can enjoy digital fireworks projected on the wall and experience a festival! Unfortunately, it was a rainy day, but the festival was going on! I had a drink. Nijo Castle was built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate. The admission fee was 1300 yen, which was expensive. After passing the main hall decorated with gold and decorations, (no photography allowed inside) there was a wide, well-kept garden, and it was so nice to walk around. They even had an outdoor wedding. However, since we had babies, we took them with a stroller, but the floor was all stone, so the stroller couldn't go very far.
