Best Things to DoNo.3 of Best Things to Do in Utrecht
Natural scenery
The Old Canal of Utrecht runs through the city center and has a long history. Bars, cafes and restaurants are dotted on both sides of the canal. Take a walk here to experience the passage of time and the tranquility of this city, or take a boat trip on the lake to enjoy the scenery on both sides. This medieval canal, which was built in the 12th century, was once an important hub for trade in northern Europe. The unique double-decker dock structure has been preserved intact to this day. Most of the lower warehouses have been converted into specialty shops, and the upper walkway connects the Gothic buildings with a history of more than 700 years. In summer, the canal will host water concerts. The 17th-century gabled buildings along the coast are reflected in the water, forming a flowing picture scroll with the canoes passing by. In the evening, the candlelight on the terrace of the dock is gradually lit, and the cruise ships under the cast iron bridge slowly pass through. This living heritage waterway has been listed as a World Heritage Preparatory Project by UNESCO, combining historical heritage with the atmosphere of modern life.
