Among all the places we visited, my travel buddy and I unanimously agreed that Qiongkushitai left the strongest impression. First, the challenges: 👉 You need to cross three mountain ridges, making self-driving 🚗 quite difficult. The journey takes about three hours ⌛️. The roads in the village are tough to navigate. Pedestrians 🚶‍, horses 🐎, and vehicles 🛻 share the same paths, making hiking quite challenging. Facilities in the village are not well-developed, so you might need to prepare for basic needs like using the restroom 🚽. But the scenery is absolutely stunning... It’s a more pristine and untouched beauty! The landscape features undulating ⛰️ mountain ranges, rustic wooden 🪵 houses, and cattle and sheep 🐂 grazing leisurely right beside you. Streams 🌊 flow past fallen logs 🪾, jagged rocks 🪨, and meander through winding channels. 🎫 There’s no entrance gate or ticket fee for the scenic area. To explore from the front mountain to the back, you can ride a horse 🐴 for 288 RMB per person or take a village vehicle for about 200 RMB per person. Self-driving seems to be limited to just a few kilometers before the road becomes inaccessible. ⚠️ Tips: If you plan to return the same day, it’s recommended to use the restroom at the visitor service center beforehand. However, if you have more time, staying overnight is highly recommended to fully experience the serene mornings and evenings of this untouched village 😌. ❤️ As someone who gets carsick easily, I was surprised that the three-hour drive didn’t bother me at all, thanks to the breathtaking scenery along the way! We thought we would spend our whole lives gazing at the sea, until one day, a guest showed me their phone after dinner: "Look, I volunteered on the grasslands in Xinjiang." She recommended the guesthouse owner's WeChat to me, and from then on, my favorite thing became checking the owner's WeChat Moments. Later, I kept pestering my husband: "How about opening a guesthouse in Qiongkushitai?" But we were temporarily talked out of it. Still, the idea lingered in my mind. Then the pandemic hit. We got married, had a baby, and our lives revolved around diapers and formula. Yet Qiongkushitai was like a hook, pulling at me, and the thought of opening a guesthouse on the grasslands kept popping up. I wanted to be a free bird, a horse running wild, or anything that could live permanently on the grasslands. I wanted to see the mountains, lakes, snow-capped peaks, and grasslands. When our baby turned three months old, my husband suddenly said, "Let’s go. How about we open a guesthouse on the grasslands?" Without hesitation, I agreed. When we told my parents, they hesitated for a moment but ultimately supported us. And so, we drove 4,000 kilometers from Jiangsu to Qiongkushitai in Ili, Xinjiang. This March, standing in Qiongkushitai, the grass was still as vividly green as in her photos. Sadly, the girl who shared those photos became part of the mountain breeze last spring. This part of Xinjiang might not be very well-known amongst foreigners but it’s definitely worth visiting. The journey began in Urumqi. We then traveled by car along the Duku Highway which is a famous route. Our first notable stop was at the Nalati Grasslands; they’re especially green and beautiful in the summer. After that we headed to the snow mountain. At all these tourist spots there are horses to ride instead of hiking. The next significant stop was at the Sayram lake. The weather was not very good when we arrived but we stuck around a bit and the rain clouds got blown away by the strong winds and the sun came out. Our last stop was at the Dushanzi Grand Canyon. There were many activities to do there including: crossing a glass bridge suspended over a part of the canyon, cycling over the canyon in a suspended bicycle, visiting the ice world with ice slides and fun activities. One night we also stayed at Bagua city. The urban planning in this city is unique and historical; it’s definitely worth a visit. The whole city has no traffic lights and its design incorporates Chinese philosophy related to balance (yin-yang).

If Xinjiang is a paradise on earth, then Qiongkushitai is undoubtedly the most enchanting part of this paradise. Setting foot on this land feels like walking into a summer scene from a Miyazaki animation. Rolling green hills, grasslands like lush carpets, scattered wooden houses and yurts, and leisurely grazing cattle and horses create a picturesque view. Sit on a chair at the observation deck, look up to see the clear blue sky, and gaze out at the layered forests and expansive meadows. The breeze carries the scent of fresh grass, sweeping away all worries. White cloth swaying gently on a clothesline, windows framing idyllic village scenes—every moment feels like a cinematic shot, soothing and romantic. In Qiongkushitai, you don't need to deliberately seek out attractions. Just wandering around is enough to create lasting memories of beauty.
