The Sondheim Theatre, formerly known as the Queen’s Theatre, opened to the public in August 1907. The theatre was originally named the Central Theatre, and was later renamed the Queen’s Theatre in memory of Queen Victoria, who died in 1901. It was renamed the Sondheim Theatre after renovation in 2019. Today, it is the home theatre for the famous play “Les Miserables”. The theatre itself is also listed as a Grade II building in the UK. The interior of the theatre is magnificent, with huge crystal chandeliers above the stage and reliefs of bauhinia flowers and naked women, revealing the former elegance and splendor of the theatre. The signature play "Les Miserables" is adapted from the novel of the same name by French writer Victor Hugo. It is a musical co-created by French musical composers Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil, telling the story of Jean Valjean against the backdrop of the French Revolution. "Les Miserables" is known as one of the most influential musicals in Europe, along with "Cats", "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Miss Saigon". There are 6 existing versions: the French original (1980), the London West End version (1985), the Broadway original (1987), the Broadway revival (2006), the Toronto revival (2013) and the Broadway revival (2014). After its premiere in London's West End in 1985, it became an unstoppable hit around the world.
