Tateyama Kurobe. Japan Alpine Route. As someone with almost no experience traveling in Japan, I had never heard of Tateyama Kurobe. I bought a five-day ticket for JR Tateyama Kurobe, stayed in Nagoya for a quick night, went to Takayama Hida for a meal, stayed in Toyama for the night, and got up early the next day to go to Tateyama. 1 day trip on the snow wall ☃️ This time, we chose to buy a Pass --> JR alpine-takayama-matsumoto area tourist pass to cover travel between Nagoya, Takaya and Toyama. The main point of this trip is to see the snow wall at Tateyama. 🎟 JR PASS costs 5,500 baht per person. It is recommended to stay in Toyama in the evening before going to the snow wall because on the day you go to the snow wall, you should wake up early to catch the first train that goes straight to the snow wall. 🏨 Recommended accommodation: Toyoko Inn Toyama-eki Shinkansen-guchi No.2 Steps to travel to the snow wall ❄️ 1. Toyama Chiho Railroad: You have to go to Dentetsu Toyama Station to catch the Toyama Chiho Railroad train on the first round, which will leave at 5:18 and arrive at Tateyamaeki at around 6:09. The reason I wanted to go on the first round is because each step of the trip takes quite a long time. There is a queue at every step, and going early is more convenient for taking pictures. In this section, we can use the Pass to enter. The journey takes about 65 minutes. 2. Tateyama station: You have to exchange the JR PASS for a ticket for the Japan Alps route at the front of the station. You have to look carefully at this section because there will be a counter for exchanging JR tickets and buying regular tickets. Be careful not to get in the wrong line. When you arrive, you won't be able to exchange because the counter is not open yet. However, you can wait in line to be among the first to go up. At every step of the journey, there will be a stamp for you to stamp on a pamphlet. 3. Tateyama Cable Car: When you have exchanged your ticket, you will get a time slot for the Cable Car. Tateyama Ropeway: It will be a cable car that takes us to see the view and continue to Kurobedaira. It takes about 7 minutes. 9. Kurobe Cable Car: It is a ride down to Kurobeko Station. I bought a local 2 days 1 night tour and went there with my 6yo daughter. The tour was travelling East direction, from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa Station. We noticed that there is lesser crowd if u start from Ogizawa to Tateyama. During this 2-day coach trip, we wander past traditional Japanese farmhouses in World Heritage–listed Shirakawago village and stroll the mountain town of Hida Takayama, aka Little Kyoto. We started from : 1. Tateyama Cable Car (7 mins ) 2. Bijodaira 3. Tateyama Highland Bus (30 mins) (Shomyo Falls can be seen from the bus) 4. Murodo (lunch, stroll, experience the snow wall) 5. Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus (10 mins) 6. Daikanbo (the observation deck atop the station or enjoy the view from the second floor) 7. Tateyama Ropeway (7 mins) 8. Kurobe Cable Car (5 mins) 9. Kurobe Dam sightseeing 10. Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus (16 mins) 11. Ogizawa Station. 1433m above sea level. 12. The end of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. We took 5 hrs to complete the whole route from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa Station. The snow wall was by far the highlight though all the other points were very beautiful. The ropeway with 360 degree views of the snow clad mountains on all sides was a beauty. I would highly recommend this to everyone visiting Japan, and especially in April when the snow wall is at its highest point. We wish that we have more time at the Murodo as my daughter loves playing with snow and the walk along the snow wall was very amazing. #newyearadventure #japan

I explored one of the world's most renowned mountain sightseeing routes that cuts through the Northern Alps, featuring a series of peaks reaching altitudes of around 3,000 meters! The route spans a total length of 37.2 km from Omachi City's "Ogizawa Station" in Nagano Prefecture to "Tateyama Station" in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, with the highest point reaching 2,450 meters. I traveled through this route by switching between six different modes of transportation! The magnificent natural scenery and breathtaking views were truly refreshing for both body and mind! Since the walking distance is minimal due to the use of transportation, it's an easy route for casual exploration. However, there may be waiting times for the rides, so make sure to plan with some extra time in mind!

Today, the snow wall stands at an impressive height of 16 meters. The sign indicates a temperature of 5°C, but it doesn't feel that cold. My phone shows a temperature of around 13-15°C, which seems more accurate to me. Strolling through the Murodo Plateau, I admired the majestic Tateyama mountain range. A few skiing enthusiasts were preparing to hike to the summit, appearing as tiny black dots from afar. It made me deeply realize how small everything seems in the face of nature. If you visit here, I recommend wearing sunglasses, as prolonged exposure to the snow's reflection can strain your eyes. After leaving Murodo, I headed to Daikanbo, Kurobe Plain, Kurobe Lake, and Kurobe Dam. Each location along the way offered spectacular views. When riding the aerial cable car at Daikanbo, I suggest facing the side with the view of Kurobe Lake—it’s more stunning. Since the cable car is pillarless, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the scenery. Before reaching the Kurobe Dam observation deck, you’ll encounter a staircase with 280 steps, built along the mountain wall with a hollow base. Standing on it might feel a bit unsettling, so those with a fear of heights should consider carefully 😅. Climbing the 280 steps was more exhausting than I expected (my legs were so sore), but the breathtaking view of Kurobe Lake and Kurobe Dam made the effort worthwhile 🤣.
