Wat Phlap Phla Chai is a large temple located on the Phetchaburi River, with a road cutting through the middle of the temple. Walking around the temple can be a bit confusing.
Phetchaburi is famous for its craftsmanship. The stucco work is so detailed, it looks so alive that it’s ready to be touched. The leaves seem to sway, and the spider webs are amazing.
If you come to Wat Phlap Phla Chai, bring binoculars, it’s so much fun to look at the pediments of the church and the temple.

Phlapphlachai Temple
Wat Phlap Phla Chai was built in the late Ayutthaya period, around 2229-2310 B.E., during the reign of King Ramathibodi IV, King Borommakot. The capital was pooled by noblemen, merchants, wealthy people, and the general public. Wat Phlap Phla Chai flourished the most during the time when Luang Pho Rit was the abbot. He was the leader in laying the foundation for the study and restoration of literary arts and was the founder of the Wat Phlap Phla Chai shadow puppetry troupe, which was famous at that time. Today, only the shadow puppets and the reputation remain. However, since the current abbot saw the importance and wanted to collect memories of Wat Phlap Phla Chai shadow puppetry, he established the Wat Phlap Phla Chai shadow puppetry museum with the cooperation and support of the Phetchaburi Pensioners Association. The museum building is inside the Phra Khanthararat temple, on the other side of Ban Dai It Road (the temple was divided into two sides by the construction of Ban Dai It Road). Inside the temple, there are Buddha statues and a replica of Luang Pho Rit, Luang Pho Korn, the former abbot of the temple. And the large shadow puppets are hung on the walls of the temple all around, displayed in frames, with lights to show the patterns of the puppets. Mostly, there is a distinction between a jup shadow puppet and a single shadow puppet, because a jup shadow puppet may have characters or locations included in the puppet, making the size of the jup shadow puppet bigger than a single shadow puppet, which is usually only about 1 meter high. #Phetchaburi
