Wat Samwihan, a national historical site
#VisitAyutthaya
🙏Wat Sam Wihan is assumed to have been built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I (Khun Luang Phra Ngua) around 1920 by Mom Luang Chi Dam and his two siblings, Chao Fa Khao and Chao Fa Khiew, to enshrine the ashes of their mother and relatives. Mom Luang Chi Dam built the reclining Buddha and the viharn, Chao Fa Khao built Luang Pho Khao and the viharn, and Chao Fa Khiew built the standing Buddha and the viharn. It was originally called Wat Sam Phihan, but later changed its name to Wat Sam Wihan because there were originally three viharns: the reclining Buddha viharn, the sitting Buddha viharn, and the standing Buddha viharn. However, the standing Buddha viharn collapsed over time, leaving only the reclining Buddha viharn and the sitting Buddha viharn.
🧎♂️The ordination hall enshrines Phra Phuttha Suwanna Nimit Mongkhon (Luang Pho Thong), a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, 3.6 meters wide at the lap. Around the ordination hall are 17 large carved stone sema stones.
🧎The sitting Buddha viharn Enshrined Phra Phutthanimit Phichitmar (Luang Pho Khao), a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture, 4.6 meters wide at the lap, which has been renovated by removing the walls and turning it into a hall vihara. 🛌 The Reclining Buddha Vihara enshrines the Reclining Buddha or the Reclining Buddha, 21 meters long, an ancient stucco Buddha image in Sukhothai architecture, meaning the arms lean outward, unlike the later Reclining Buddha, whose arms are bent straight up to support the head. This Reclining Buddha is in the vihara, so it is understood that it is a reclining Buddha image in the posture of preaching to the demon gods and demons to understand the greatness that is not a person. This Reclining Buddha has beautiful colors, different from other large reclining Buddha images, which are mostly white.
👨👩👦All buildings, namely the Ubosot, the Hall vihara (the Sitting Buddha Vihara), and the Reclining Buddha Vihara, are lined up in a single line, facing the Bang Khuat Canal to the west.
🧎♂️The pagoda in front of the reclining Buddha temple is a small decorated pagoda with a high base with twenty-cornered corners, situated on a circumambulating base with twelve-cornered corners. 🧎♂️The main pagoda is located opposite the central chapel on the east side. It is a large round or bell-shaped pagoda with a height of approximately 40 meters. It is a pagoda from the early to mid Ayutthaya period, influenced by Sukhothai art. The Fine Arts Department announced it as a national ancient monument in 1943.
