While the origins of Ravello date back to the Roman era, it was the Middle Ages that gave it wealth and status, when the inhabitants were involved in maritime trade with the Orient. The newly enriched families of that age built castles, villas, churches and civic buildings to show off their wealth and to rival their richer, influential neighbor town of Amalfi. Amalfitans gave Ravello the name, "Rebellum" (rebel). The town's villas offer vivid vantage points for the views. Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are famous for their encompassing panoramas. Villa Rufolo inspired the composer Wagner when he wrote his famed opera, Parsifal. Ravello is still known for its musical events, including the Ravello Festival, which is strongly connected to the composer and his symphonies. The town boasts its cultural roots, too; just stroll the alleyways, enjoy the architecture and piazzas to see the town's history and pride at its best. I was lucky enough to stretch a little a pay a visit to #sorrento as well, just a little up the coast close to Naples and try some of the best #limoncello I’ve ever tried 😋 I made sure to buy a few bottles to bring back to Australia. If you are planning to stay a few days get ready to hop on the ferry and have some walking / hiking to do. Some of the most beautiful spots for pictures are high and you need to take quite a few steps. But the view is absolutely rewarding. #europetrip Positano looks stunning as you arrive closer to it. I was on a public ferry from Salerno after a couple of nights there. And I remember seeing this gorgeous retreat like town on the cliff of mediterranean, surrounded by stunning views. The weather was absolutely perfect. Albeit, a bit hot though. But your room is most likely going to have an air conditioning if that helps. This was the month of May and that did mean a considerable amount of tourists. Which is why I recommend booking well ahead of travelling here. Speaking of hot, I was slightly exhausted so on my day u arrived I stayed indoors snacking and grabbing a drink at the hotels bar. In the evening I found a nice place to eat and befriended some travellers from Germany. That helped plan the next day where we shared a taxi to Ravello. Which offered some gorgeous gardens, architecture and shopping. Our taxi tour included a stop at the blue grotto. A tip here, you want to avoid those stops that friendly locals would recommend. It's a tourist set up. Any who, Ravello was fantastic. However pricey, I think the drive is somewhat challenging so it worth having a reliable and safe ride. The history of Cimbrone can be traced back to the 11th century, and today's villas are built in the early 20th century by a British baron.
