Spain travel guide and discussion

Have you ever found yourself in a situation while traveling abroad where you needed cash but didn't know how to use an ATM? This guide summarizes the basic steps for withdrawing cash from an ATM overseas using international debit cards such as Wise or Revolut. ___ STEP 1 | Find a Compatible ATM First, find an ATM that accepts your card brand. Choose an ATM with the Visa logo if you have a Visa card, or the Mastercard logo if you have a Mastercard. Some ATMs may not accept international cards, so it's recommended to check before inserting your card. ___ STEP 2 | Select Withdrawal at the ATM After inserting your card, select your language and enter your PIN. Then, select a withdrawal option such as "Cash Withdrawal." The screen display and operation order may vary depending on the ATM, but the basic steps are the same. ___ STEP 3 | Enter the Amount and Select "Local Currency" This is a particularly important point. After entering the amount you want to withdraw, select "Local Currency" on the currency selection screen. For example, in the Eurozone, the currency is EUR (Euro). If you choose to convert to your local currency, such as Japanese Yen (JPY), the ATM's exchange rate may be applied ("DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion)"). If you want to use the card's exchange rate, such as with Wise or Revolut, it's best to select the local currency. ___ STEP 4 | Don't Forget Cash, Card, and Receipt Once the withdrawal is complete, ・Cash ・Card ・Receipt Don't forget to take these three items. Also, some ATMs may charge a separate fee from the ATM operator. It's recommended to check the transaction amount, fees, and total amount displayed on the screen before confirming. ___ STEP 5 | Check Wise and Revolut Fees and Free Limits ATM fees and free limits vary not only by card company but also by the plan you use and the ATM operator. Wise and Revolut free limits and fees may change, so check the latest information on their official websites or apps before traveling. ___ The most important thing to remember when using an ATM overseas is: "Choose the local currency." If the ATM displays a message like, "Do you want to receive your money in Japanese Yen?", check the details before making your selection. Since the screen displays vary from ATM to ATM, the key is to operate it calmly while checking the information. Checking the procedure once before your trip will give you peace of mind when you're there.

If you're traveling abroad, a Wise card is a convenient card to have. On the other hand, subways and buses do not have a transportation card function, so a separate transportation card such as T-money is required. Also, some stores may only accept cards issued in Korea, but this is becoming less common in tourist areas. ___ 📍Regarding the prices in the image The image shows example amounts in Japanese Yen (JPY) for Japanese travelers. Wise supports not only Japanese Yen, but also: ・USD (US Dollar) ・EUR (Euro) ・GBP (British Pound) ・AUD (Australian Dollar) ・CAD (Canadian Dollar) ・SGD (Singapore Dollar) ・TWD (Taiwan Dollar) ・HKD (Hong Kong Dollar) ・KRW (South Korean Won) It supports over 40 currencies, including those listed above. Since you can exchange currency from your country of residence to the required currency, it is a convenient card for travelers from countries other than Japan. *Exchange rates are constantly fluctuating, so please check the latest rates in the app before exchanging currency. ___ When traveling abroad, what's more important than "which country you go to" is "whether you can travel to multiple countries with one card." I hope this is helpful for those considering a Wise card. I share my travel experience to everyone as if I was there because some destinations steal a piece of your heart completely, and for me, San Sebastian is that rare place I can never stay away from for long. Getting here is part of the magic, as you can easily fly into San Sebastian Airport or land in nearby Bilbao and take a scenic, comfortable hour-long bus ride right along the breathtaking northern coast of Spain. The true core of why I keep returning is because it's located on the stunning Bay of Biscay in Spain's Basque Country, San Sebastian is a mecca for food lovers, boasting one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world alongside legendary pintxo bars in the old town. Walking through those lively historic alleyways, ordering bite-sized gourmet masterpieces off the counter, and pairing them with a glass of local sparkling txakoli wine creates a sensory rush that feels just as exhilarating on your tenth visit as it did on your first. People return here driven by culinary obsession, complemented by golden beach coves and Belle Époque architecture, and I am definitely right at the front of that crowd. Beyond the world-famous food scene, my absolute favorite repeat rituals involve wandering along the sweeping, shell-shaped curve of Playa de La Concha, admiring the grand 19th-century French-inspired buildings that line the city center, and catching the antique funicular up Monte Igueldo for that classic, jaw-dropping panoramic view over the entire bay and its emerald island. To keep things budget-friendly without missing out on the city's incredible flavors, I always mix smart local habits with my travels, skipping pricey sit-down lunches in favor of hopping from one standing-room-only pintxo bar to another in the Old Town, where a few euros get you some of the finest gourmet bites on Earth. Staying in cozy guesthouses just a short walk outside the immediate tourist center also helps stretch your budget while letting you experience the daily rhythm of local Basque life. Uncovering hidden gems away from the main beachfront is what transforms a simple vacation into a lifelong love affair with the city, which is why I always make time to explore quieter neighborhoods like Gros. Gros offers a much more laid-back, surf-centric vibe with amazing local cider houses and alternative cafes where you can chat with friendly residents and surfers. Another secret favorite spot of mine is walking past the bustling harbor to find the Peine del Viento, Eduardo Chillida’s dramatic iron sculptures anchored into the crashing rocks at the edge of the sea, where you can stand and watch the powerful waves of the Bay of Biscay put on an unforgettable show. Returning here over and over again is never just about ticking off sights; it is about immersing myself in a culture that celebrates good food, natural beauty, and a joyful zest for everyday living that always calls me back home. #sansebastian #basquecountry #spaintravel #foodieheaven #pintxos #repeatdestination #travelstories #traveltips #hiddengems #bayofbiscay #sansebastianspain #wanderlust #travelinspiration #repeatdestination

When I finally strolled down La Rambla during my recent trip to Barcelona, I honestly expected the romantic, tree-lined promenade of postcards, but instead, I found myself navigating a shoulder-to-shoulder sea of humanity where it is notoriously crowded, overpriced, filled with tourist traps, and a massive hotspot for pickpockets. Every cafe lining the strip charged exorbitant prices for mediocre tapas while street vendors and performers hustled for every euro, making the whole experience feel less like a cultural immersion and more like an exhausting tourist gauntlet. I quickly realized that lingering here means missing the true soul of the city, especially since the heavy crowds and aggressive pricing drown out any authentic charm the boulevard might have once held. If you want to experience the real pulse of Barcelona without the stress, I suggest following my footsteps and heading straight to neighborhoods like Poblenou or Gràcia for a much more authentic neighborhood feel, local cafes, and vibrant Catalan culture without the aggressive tourist pricing. Wandering through Gràcia felt like stepping into a different era where independent artisan shops, quiet leafy plazas, and local seniors chatting over coffee replace the souvenir shacks of the center. Meanwhile, Poblenou gave me that wonderful coastal neighborhood vibe with gorgeous old industrial architecture turned into creative spaces, local beaches free of massive resort crowds, and amazing family-run eateries where the paella and vermut are actually authentic and reasonably priced. My biggest tip for anyone visiting Barcelona is to skip the central tourist bubbles entirely and spend your days getting lost in these local districts where the heartbeat of Catalonia actually lives. Grab a table at a neighborhood terrace in Gràcia, order a local vermut with some olives, or take a peaceful stroll down Rambla del Poblenou to watch everyday life unfold in a friendly, unhurried atmosphere. If you want a genuine travel experience that connects you with the local people and culture, steer clear of the overrated traps and explore the neighborhoods that truly make Barcelona unforgettable. #BarcelonaTravel #LaRambla #OverratedDestinationss #GraciaBarcelona #Poblenou #TravelTips #CatalanCulture #AvoidTouristTraps #SpainTravel #TravelStory #overratedspots

Save this before you land — the pickpockets on La Rambla are already waiting for you. Barcelona is Gaudí, tapas, beaches, and a pickpocket's paradise all rolled into one. First-timers get their phones lifted on the metro, pay €30 for a mediocre paella on La Rambla, and show up at Sagrada Familia only to find tickets sold out for the next five days. Here are 20 hacks to save you money, time, and your sanity. 🚩 FLAG FEATURE — The One Thing You Must Do Before Landing: Book your Sagrada Familia and Park Güell tickets online, weeks in advance, only on the official websites. Skip-the-line is not a luxury here — it's essential. Third-party resellers charge double and sometimes sell fake tickets. Also download offline maps and the TMB app for metro routes. 🚌 1. Skip airport taxis — take the Aerobus or train. Aerobus to Plaça Catalunya takes 35 minutes and costs €7.25. The R2 Nord train to Passeig de Gràcia is €4.60. Taxis run €30–40 and sit in traffic. 🎫 2. Get a T-casual or T-familiar card for the metro. T-casual: 10 rides for €12.55, single person. T-familiar: 8 rides for €10.70, shareable. Works on metro, buses, and trams. Validate it on the first use. 📱 3. Download Citymapper and TMB app. Citymapper is better than Google Maps for Barcelona transit. TMB shows real-time metro disruptions. Both work offline if you save your routes. 👛 4. Watch for pickpockets on Line 3 and La Rambla. They target tourists at Catalunya, Liceu, and Sagrada Familia stations. Keep your phone and wallet in zipped inside pockets, not back pockets. Don't stand near the doors. 🍝 5. Never eat on La Rambla. Walk into El Born, Gràcia, or Poble-sec. Prices drop by half and quality triples. Look for menus in Catalan, not just English and photos. 🥘 6. Menu del día is your best lunch deal. €10–15 for three courses including bread, wine or water, and dessert. Available Monday to Friday, usually 1–4 PM. Locals eat late — follow their lead. 🍤 7. Tapas are not free in Barcelona. Unlike Granada or Madrid, you pay for every plate. Order 3–4 per person, share everything. Expect €4–8 per tapa. Don't fill up on bread — it's not free either. 🎨 8. Sagrada Familia: book towers and go early or late. Morning (9–11 AM) or late afternoon (4–6 PM) has the best light and fewer crowds. The official app has a free audio guide. Skip the tower if you're claustrophobic — the elevator is tight. 🌳 9. Park Güell: buy tickets online, know the zones. The monumental zone requires a timed ticket (€10). The free area is still beautiful and has great views. Go at opening (8 AM) to beat the crowds. 🏛️ 10. Casa Batlló and La Pedrera: book online or admire from outside. Tickets are €25–35 each. If budget is tight, the exteriors and the gift shops are worth a look. The rooftop of La Pedrera is stunning but pricey. 🚇 11. Metro is fast, but walking is best in the center. The Gothic Quarter, El Born, and Eixample are all walkable. Use the metro for longer hops. Wear comfortable shoes — cobblestones are brutal. 🏖️ 12. Barceloneta beach is crowded and full of pickpockets. Go to Bogatell, Mar Bella, or Nova Icària instead. Quieter, cleaner, and safer. Don't leave your bag unattended for even a second. 🗣️ 13. Learn basic Catalan and Spanish. "Bon dia" (Catalan) or "Buenos días" (Spanish) in the morning. "Gràcies" or "Gracias" for thank you. Locals appreciate the effort, especially Catalan. ☀️ 14. Avoid August if you can. It's brutally hot, packed, and many family-run shops close for the month. May, June, September, and October are ideal. Book restaurants ahead in high season. 🍷 15. Dinner starts at 9 PM — plan accordingly. Kitchens often don't open until 8:30 or 9 PM. If you're hungry at 7 PM, you'll end up in a tourist trap. Have a late lunch and a snack to survive. 🛍️ 16. Tax-free shopping starts at €90.01. Bring your passport. Claim at the airport using Global Blue or Planet kiosks. Not all stores participate — ask first. Keep receipts and the sealed bag. 🎟️ 17. Never buy tickets from street sellers. They sell fake or used tickets for Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and the metro. Always buy from official machines, apps, or ticket offices. 🚡 18. Visit Montjuïc by cable car or funicular. The Transbordador Aeri (cable car) offers stunning views. The funicular from Paral·lel is cheaper and part of the metro network. Gardens and the castle are free to explore. ⛰️ 19. Day trip to Montserrat — buy a combined ticket. The train from Plaça Espanya plus the cable car or rack railway is easiest. Buy the combined ticket (Trans Montserrat) for savings. Go early to beat the crowds. 🚩 20. If someone offers you a "free" bracelet or a "lucky" shell game, it's a scam. This happens on La Rambla, near the cathedral, and at Barceloneta. They shove it in your hand, then demand payment. Drop it, say "no", and walk away fast. A firm "no gràcies" works every time. 🚩 FLAG FEATURE (Save This Part): Barcelona rewards preparation more than almost any city. The three things that will save you the most money, time, and stress: booked Sagrada Familia and Park Güell tickets weeks in advance, a T-casual or T-familiar transport card, and the word "no" for every street hustler. Everything else is just tapas, Gaudí, and Mediterranean sunsets. #Barcelona #BarcelonaTravel #BarcelonaHacks #TravelTips #SpainTravel #TripMoments #TravelSmart #SagradaFamilia #ParkGuell #LaRambla #Tapas #BarcelonaMetro #BarcelonaGuide #Wanderlust #TravelHacks

The Basilica of the National Vow (Basílica del Voto Nacional) is an iconic landmark in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It stands as the largest and most representative Neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. Historical Background · Proposal & Groundbreaking: Proposed in 1883 by Father Julio Matovelle to dedicate Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Construction officially began in 1892. · A Century in the Making: After nearly a hundred years of construction, the cathedral was consecrated in 1985. A fascinating local legend persists: "When the Basilica is truly, completely finished, the world will come to an end." Consequently, fine details and maintenance work seem to continue indefinitely. Architectural & Artistic Features · Neo-Gothic Style: Inspired by classic European cathedrals, its design is often compared to Notre-Dame de Paris and Spain’s Burgos Cathedral. It features soaring pointed arches, flying buttresses, and slender spires. · Massive Scale: Measuring 140 meters long and 35 meters wide, its twin towers reach a height of 115 meters. Perched on a slope northeast of the historic center, it is visible from almost every corner of the city. · Localized Gargoyles: Unlike European cathedrals that feature demons or mythical beasts, the gargoyles here are modeled after Ecuador’s native wildlife, including Galapagos giant tortoises, capybaras, armadillos, and condors. 🐢🐦 · Radiant Stained Glass: The high-ceilinged interior is bathed in light. The stained glass windows filter the intense South American sun into soft, warm pink and golden hues, creating a sacred and solemn atmosphere. Travel Highlights & Experience · Scaling the Towers: Adventurous visitors can climb the high staircases and narrow suspension bridges to the main spires and the "Condor Tower." From the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Quito’s Old Town, the surrounding Andes Mountains, and distant volcanoes. 🌋 · Nearby Attractions: Located in the Historic Center, the Basilica is within walking distance of the colonial Plaza Grande, the Presidential Palace (Carondelet Palace), and the stunning Church of the Society of Jesus, famous for its 23K gold-leaf interior. How to Get There Walking from Plaza Grande: Head north uphill along Calle Venezuela for about 7 blocks (approx. 10–15 minutes) until you reach Calle Carchi. Note: Since Quito sits at an altitude of 2,850 meters, this uphill trek can be quite strenuous—take it slow! Public Transit Quito has an extensive public transport network: · Trolebús: Take the north-south Trolebús line and get off at the Banco Central or La Marín station. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk uphill heading west/north.

I thought Málaga was going to be beaches, sunshine and a few tapas… I was VERY wrong! 🇪🇸😳 I had just one day to explore Málaga before heading off for another adventure the following day — Caminito del Rey. So I decided to see just how much I could fit in. And what a day it turned into… 🌅 An almost completely empty Málaga early in the morning. 🏛️ Ancient ruins and the historic centre. ⛪ Málaga Cathedral — La Manquita, “The One-Armed Lady” — so called because one of its two towers was never completed. 🚶♂️ Wandering the streets and discovering corners of the old city. 🚡 Heading up into the hills. 🛴 My FIRST EVER Segway at 52! 😂 🏰 Reaching the heights around Gibralfaro and looking down over Málaga, the Mediterranean and the famous La Malagueta bullring. ⛵ Seeing Málaga from the water. 🏖️ Finding the famous Málaga beach sign. ☕ And don't forget to visit Recyclo Cafe for a unique experience, good coffee and excellent staff 🚆 And even checking the train timetable for the next day's adventure… Because this wasn't just a city break. This was day ONE. And the following day? I swapped the city for the spectacular Caminito del Rey. 😳 That's what I'm trying to do differently at 52. I'm not travelling just to say I've been somewhere. I'm trying to experience it. This year I've already done ziplines, mountain biking, hot-air balloons, Segways, quad bikes and camel rides — and I'm deliberately looking for what's next. So now I want your help… 👇 If you had ONE DAY in Málaga, what would YOU do? 🏖️ BEACH & RELAX 🏛️ HISTORY & OLD TOWN ⛰️ MOUNTAINS & VIEWS 🛴 SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT And here's the bigger question… What should a 52-year-old adventurer put on the list next? 😂👇 I've got plenty more firsts planned. Making the world smaller, one weekend at a time. 🌍✈️ 📍 Málaga, Spain 🇪🇸 #Malaga #MalagaSpain #SpainTravel #Andalucia #CostaDelSol #TravelMoments #AdventureTravel #TravelExperiences #SoloTravel #52AndAdventuring #MakingUpForLostTime

Valencia was one of those places where I seemed to be eating every time I turned a corner. I started at Mercado Central, wandering past stalls packed with fruit, jamón, cheese, and freshly baked treats. It was impossible not to snack. From there, I walked through Ciutat Vella toward Plaza Redonda, stopping for a small pastry and coffee along the way. Later, I headed to Mercado de Colón, where the beautiful old building has plenty of spots for a quick bite and a drink. Of course, I couldn’t visit Valencia without trying horchata with fartons. I had mine around Horchatería Santa Catalina, and the combination was much better than I expected cold, sweet, and perfect for a warm afternoon. For something savory, I found bocadillos and croquetas around the old town before making my way toward Ruzafa, where the food scene felt younger and more relaxed. I ended the day near Malvarrosa Beach, grabbing a simple snack before walking along the sea. Valencia made me realize that street food doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, a good snack, a sunny street, and nowhere to rush are enough. #valencia #spain

Your complete guide for a perfect day in Toledo, Spain! This UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, is celebrated as the "City of Three Cultures" (Christian, Islamic, and Jewish). Located just a 30-minute trip from Madrid, it is an unmissable classic for any traveler. 🚄 Essential Transportation Guide Taking the high-speed train (AVANT) from Madrid is the most recommended and convenient way to travel: · Departure Station: Madrid Atocha Station. · Travel Time: Only about 33 minutes direct. · Booking Tip: It is highly recommended to book your round-trip tickets in advance on the official Renfe website. Popular departures on weekends or during peak seasons (such as 9:00 AM out and 6:00 PM back) sell out very quickly. · Arriving in Toledo: The train station is about 1.5 km from the heart of the old city, Plaza de Zocodover. It is strongly advised not to walk uphill. · Bus: Take bus 5, 61, or 62 from outside the station to go directly to the city square in about 10 minutes (approx. €1.5 one way). · Escalators (Pro Tip): You can take a bus or walk to the Safont viewpoint at the foot of the hill, where free outdoor electric escalators lead directly to the hilltop city, saving you both time and effort. Alternative Bus Option: You can take an ALSA bus from the Plaza Elíptica station in Madrid. It is cheaper, but the journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes one way. The bus station in Toledo is relatively close to the city; you can walk directly to the escalators from there. 🗺️ The Perfect One-Day Itinerary · 09:30 AM | A Historic Start: Puerta de Bisagra You will pass this grand ancient gate when taking the bus up from the station. As the main entrance to Toledo, its top is adorned with the double-headed eagle crest of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. · 10:00 AM | Plaza de Zocodover The central square of the old city, lined with cafes and souvenir shops. We suggest picking up a map at the tourist center here first. · 10:30 AM | Toledo Cathedral (Catedral Primada) The absolute highlight of the trip! It represents the pinnacle of Spanish Gothic architecture. The interior is incredibly lavish, and the sacristy houses authentic masterpieces by El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez—an experience as breathtaking as any art museum. · 12:30 PM | Alcázar de Toledo A square fortress situated at the highest point of the city, offering excellent views. Now a military museum, even if you don't go inside, you must visit the library cafe on the top floor for a coffee overlooking the entire city skyline. · 01:30 PM | Enjoy Local Toledo Cuisine for Lunch · 03:30 PM | Exploring the Jewish Quarter Head to the western side of the old city. Visit the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca. This unique building, though a synagogue, was built by Islamic craftsmen and later became a Catholic church—a perfect embodiment of the city's "Three Cultures." · 04:30 PM | Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes Built by the Catholic Monarchs, its two-story Gothic-Mudejar cloister is breathtakingly beautiful and a perfect spot for photography. · 06:00 PM | World-Class Postcard Panorama: Mirador del Valle This must be the grand finale of your day! Here, you can see the stunning panorama of the Tagus River winding around the entire old city of Toledo. · How to get there: You can take the tourist mini-train (Zocotren) or a sightseeing bus from Plaza de Zocodover. The route includes a stop at this viewpoint for photos. 🍽️ Must-Try Food and Hidden Local Gems The Castile-La Mancha region, where Toledo is located, is famous for its hearty meats and game. Look for these three traditional dishes: 1. Carcamusas: A slow-cooked pork stew with tomatoes, beans, chorizo, and peas, usually served in a small clay dish. It's delicious when dipped with bread. 2. Perdiz a la Toledana (Toledo-style Partridge): The city's most famous game dish, braised with garlic, onions, and bay leaves until the meat is incredibly flavorful. 3. Mazapán (Marzipan): Toledo’s legendary dessert introduced by the Moors. Made of pure almond flour and sugar, the most authentic versions are handmade by nuns at the Santa Cruz convent in the old city. 🎯 Recommended Restaurants: · Taberna el Botero (Highly-rated modern creative bistro) · Highlights: A highly acclaimed fusion restaurant recommended by many foodies and private guides. Their meat dishes (like the oxtail lasagna) and creative tapas are stunning, and their cocktails are top-tier. · Reservations: The kitchen opens at 1:00 PM. Seating is limited, so booking in advance is strongly advised. · Lo Nuestro Taperia & Restaurante (Authentic old-school family cooking) · Highlights: Located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, this is the place to eat authentic Carcamusas pork stew and venison stew. The flavors are warm and homey, prices are fair, and the staff is as welcoming as family. ❤️🔥

Spain is beautiful, but I really don't recommend going in September–October❗❗ Take my advice and don't just rush into it!! Don't be fooled by the curated photo grids of "Gaudí curves + flamenco red dresses + Sagrada Família light and shadow + Andalusian white walls at sunset + La Rioja grape harvest." Spain isn't just "one Spain." It's a patchwork of southern inland ovens, Mediterranean coastal breezes, green and rainy northern regions, and central plateaus that freeze at night. September–October is a transitional period where "the south still feels like midsummer in September, the north starts getting rainy in October, pickpockets are most active after the National Day holiday, and you still have to fight for popular tickets." 🚫 Why I advise you not to rush into visiting in September–October 1️⃣ Southern Andalusia hasn't left summer behind in September Seville, Córdoba, and Granada often hit 30°C+ during the day in early September. Walking through the Alhambra, the Royal Palace, or the old Jewish quarter at noon means no shade, harsh UV rays, and sweat running into your eyes. You plan to "visit the Royal Palace in the morning, explore the old town for food at noon, and take panoramic photos in Albaicín in the afternoon," but in reality: it's too hot at noon so you hide in a café, the afternoon has backlighting + you get sunburned, and it only cools down at night when attractions are about to close. If you really want to visit Andalusia, mid-June to September is for "heat-tolerant travelers only." 2️⃣ The north and west start changing their tune in October Barcelona, Santiago, Bilbao, and Galicia see more rainy days in October. Overcast skies, sudden showers, and sea breezes make it feel several degrees colder. If you want to capture "Mediterranean blue that looks unreal + clean lines of Gaudí's facades," you'll get gray, unedited photos on cloudy days. If you want to walk the Camino de Santiago, having wet shoes and socks for 3 days is standard. 3️⃣ September isn't the low season; it's "tail-end of summer pricing" Many people think that by September, the crowds are gone and prices are lower—wrong. The first 2 weeks of September are the end of European family vacations + La Mercè Festival in Barcelona (late September) + students returning to school. You still have to queue for the Sagrada Família, Casa Milà, the Alhambra, and the Prado. Hotels are slightly softer than in August, but nowhere near "low season prices." High-speed rail, flights, and accommodation along the Camino are still expensive. 4️⃣ The siesta culture + dinner culture cut the day in half Small towns and ancient villages close from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM; churches, markets, and craft shops all shut down. Your planned "day of exploring the ancient city" actually looks like this: intense sightseeing from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, nowhere to go from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, heading out again at 5:00 PM, many small restaurants aren't open for dinner at 7:00 PM, and you don't get to eat a full meal until 10:00 PM. For those who can't adapt: sitting outside attractions in the afternoon, looking for open restaurants in alleys in the middle of the night. 5️⃣ The beach vibe starts winding down after mid-October You can still swim in the Mediterranean in September, but the water temperature drops in October. By late October, many seaside chiringuitos, island-hopping speedboats, and coastal promenade cafés start shortening their hours. If you want to photograph the "jelly-like waters of Ibiza/Mallorca/Costa Brava," don't schedule it after October 20. If you want to see the "La Rioja grape harvest," that's fine, but don't force a beach route into the same trip. 6️⃣ Pickpockets and fake police specifically target periods when tourists are mixed in On La Rambla in Barcelona, Puerta del Sol in Madrid, at subway turnstiles, and in the Sagrada Família queue area, the mix of tourists + students + festival crowds in September–October brings out the rosemary bracelet scammers, fake police checking passports, and distraction thieves. For first-time visitors to Europe, keeping your phone in your back pocket, wearing a backpack on your back, or accepting a "free red string" on the street = standard procedure for being targeted. 📅 When is the right time? ✅ April–May: Andalusia isn't roasting, Barcelona is clear, orange blossoms are still in bloom in Seville. The sweet spot for a first trip to Spain. ✅ September (only if you don't fear the heat/know how to avoid the midday sun/only visit the Mediterranean and Madrid): More comfortable than July–August, but not a "no-brainer." ✅ October 8–end of October: City routes (Madrid + Barcelona + Seville) are okay, don't be greedy with the beach. ✅ La Rioja/Ribera del Duero grape harvest: Late September–October is truly great, but don't turn it into a "visit everywhere" trip. ❌ Early September for Andalusia: You'll be so hot you'll question your life choices. ❌ After October 20 for a big loop of "islands + pilgrimage + southern ancient cities": The sea is cold, the north is rainy, and the ancient cities are half-closed. 🚨 Survival guide if you insist on going in September–October · For your first trip, don't plan a full loop of "Barcelona + Madrid + Seville + Granada + Santiago + Mallorca." Choose either the "Mediterranean city route" or "Andalusia + Madrid." · Visiting the south in September: Leave before 8:30 AM, go into museums/markets/indoor venues from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and take photos of the old town after 6:00 PM. · Visiting in October: Bring a windbreaker + a light down jacket. Don't plan heavy outdoor routes in the north and west. · Book the Sagrada Família, Alhambra, Royal Palace of Madrid, and Prado/Reina Sofía Museum on the official websites in advance. Don't trust the "tickets available today" touts at the entrance. · In Barcelona/Madrid, wear your backpack on your chest. Don't accept bracelets, don't follow fake police, and don't take out your wallet near subway turnstiles. · Eat lunch before 2:00 PM, and don't wait until 10:00 PM to find a restaurant for dinner. Don't plan to visit attractions in small towns in the afternoon; having a glass of Sherry/Rioja + eating tapas is a better fit. · Don't plan beach trips after October 25. If you want to see the sea, go to Costa del Sol/Gran Canaria; it's more reliable than the Costa Brava. It's not that Spain isn't good; it's that if you come in September–October, you're gambling on southern residual heat, northern autumn rain, tail-end summer prices, siestas cutting your itinerary into pieces, and pickpockets picking the perfect time. Wait until the orange blossoms bloom in April, or until you learn to "hide during the day and come out at night" in late September. Only then will Gaudí's curves feel like they're speaking to you, and Seville's flamenco will truly get under your skin💃🍷

I recently took Uzbekistan’s high-speed train, the AFROSIYOB, from Samarkand to Tashkent. Built by the Spanish company Talgo, this high-speed rail reaches speeds of 250 km/h, connecting Tashkent and Samarkand in just about 2 hours and 10 to 30 minutes. It’s the one train every traveler to Uzbekistan wants to experience at least once when moving between cities! 🚄 ① Book your tickets as soon as they go on sale! AFROSIYOB is incredibly popular and often sells out almost immediately on the day reservations open. But don't give up right away if it's full! ✨ Seats often open up due to cancellations, so it’s worth checking the site frequently. If you're still worried, one strategy is to book the "SHARQ" train as a backup and then switch to the AFROSIYOB if a seat becomes available later. Just be aware that while SHARQ tickets are refundable, there are cancellation fees involved. 💺 ② Even Economy is spacious and comfortable! I rode in Economy this time, and it was much roomier than I expected. The seats are wide and the cabin is clean. For a two-hour journey, Economy is more than enough for a pleasant trip. 🥐 ③ Tea and snack service Between Samarkand and Tashkent, they served tea and light snacks like bread. There’s also a trolley service that comes through. You can buy extra drinks and snacks, making the two-hour ride fly by. *Note: Service may vary depending on the route and specific train. ⌛️ ④ Travel time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes The AFROSIYOB takes about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes between Tashkent and Samarkand. It’s much faster than going by bus or car, making it perfect for anyone looking to tour Uzbekistan on a tight schedule. 📢 ⑤ Pay attention to station announcements ⚠️ Unlike in some other countries, they don't repeatedly announce arrivals and departures. If you just wait for a grand announcement, you might miss your train. As departure time approaches, make sure to check the electronic boards and the platform yourself. 👜 ⑥ Baggage checks at the station entrance There is a security screening for your luggage when entering the station. I recommend arriving a bit early rather than cutting it close. 🎫 ⑦ Fares are higher than standard trains The AFROSIYOB is pricier compared to Uzbekistan’s regular trains. However, it saves a lot of time between cities, making it a great option for travelers who want to maximize their trip. The biggest hurdle for the AFROSIYOB is definitely getting a ticket. My best advice is to check for reservations early and keep checking for cancellations if it looks full. I hope this helps anyone planning a trip to Uzbekistan! ✨ I have other posts about Uzbekistan, so feel free to take a look.

When people think of buildings without straight lines, many immediately think of the Sagrada Família in Spain. But hidden in Shenzhen is a landmark just as deeply romantic: the Marisfrolg Headquarters. With an investment of 2.5 billion yuan and 14 years of meticulous craftsmanship, the entire complex resembles an eagle spreading its wings when viewed from above. There isn't a single rigid straight line to be found; everywhere you look, there are flowing curves. 💡 The origin: An obsession sparked by a trip While traveling in New Zealand, founder Zhu Chongyun was deeply moved by the local architecture. She visited the designer three times, specifically inviting New Zealand's national treasure designer Fred to lead the design of the headquarters building. The project officially launched in 2007, weaving a deep longing for nature into every part of the structure. 🌿 Biomimetic design: The building itself is a living organism The entire building completely abandons conventional straight-line architecture, extensively utilizing parabolas and spirals to replicate the forms of nature in the structure. The 68 double-curved leaf panels may look symmetrical, but no two are exactly alike. From the smallest window to every single pillar, every detail is unique. What is most moving is the facade. 90% of the materials are recycled waste: 4,000 tons of ceramic shards, 700,000 old bricks, and marble scraps. Old objects are given new life; from a distance, it looks like a mosaic, piecing together discarded fragments into art that belongs solely to this place. ⏳ In a Shenzhen that chases speed, choosing to slow down Shenzhen is a city that races against the clock, where everyone is rushing for efficiency and progress. Yet, this building was slowly sculpted over the course of 14 years. It does not chase quick success, nor does it compromise for commercial gain; it only seeks to uphold an aesthetic obsession and the spirit of craftsmanship. Sometimes, the fastest way to arrive is to take the slowest path. In an era full of straight lines, the willingness to persist with curves is, in itself, a rare form of dedication. ✨ When you come to Shenzhen, don't just visit the shopping malls—you must come and see this building. What you see is the stunning exterior; what you don't see is the romance and craftsmanship accumulated over more than a decade.

Setting an alarm for 5:30 AM while on vacation feels like a self-inflicted punishment. Your bed is comfortable, the blackout curtains are doing their job, and every rational thought in your brain tells you to hit snooze. But there is a specific kind of magic that only exists during that brief thirty-minute window when a city transitions from total stillness to early morning light. Over my recent travels, I made it a personal habit to drag myself out of bed across different countries, simply to catch the first light. Looking back through my camera roll, every single missed hour of sleep was worth it. Here are seven completely different sunrise moments caught across Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Jordan—each with its own distinct mood, energy, and morning rhythm: 1-The Open Sea Edge: Barcelona Beach (Barcelona, Spain) Standing on the cold, soft sand of Barcelona before the city wakes up is an entirely different experience than visiting during the afternoon. The beach is completely empty save for a few early runners. The sun comes up directly over the horizon of the Mediterranean Sea, turning the gentle tide into liquid gold. There are no loud crowds, no street vendors, and no music—just the rhythmic, heavy sound of waves washing ashore against the quiet city backdrop. 2-The High-Angle Skyline: Barcelona Hotel Room View Sometimes you don't even need to leave your room to catch the magic. Stepping onto a hotel balcony just as the first pale light creeps over the horizon gives you a bird’s-eye perspective on the city. You watch the dark silhouettes of apartment blocks and grand avenues slowly gain color, the streetlights clicking off one by one, and the distant sea catching the very first glint of orange daylight while the streets below remain completely silent. 3-The Still Reflection: The Arno River (Pisa, Italy) If ocean sunrises are energetic, river sunrises are pure tranquility. Walking down to the Arno River in Pisa at dawn feels like stepping into a peaceful painting. The air is crisp and completely still, turning the surface of the river into a perfect, glassy mirror. The pastel pink and soft yellow hues of the sky reflect off the historic Italian facades lining the bank, with not a single tourist or tour bus in sight. 4-The Harbor Calm: Fethiye Marina View (Muğla, Turkey) Waking up in Fethiye to a hotel balcony view over the marina offers a distinct coastal charm. Early in the morning, the water inside the bay is as flat as glass. As the sun climbs over the surrounding pine-covered mountains, it casts long, warm rays across the harbor, lighting up the tall wooden masts of parked gulets and yachts. The only sound is the subtle clinking of boat ropes against masts and the distant call of seabirds. 5-The Mountain Cloud Oasis: Rize Bungalow Breakfast (Black Sea, Turkey) Far away from coastal beaches, sunrise in the green lush hills of Rize hits differently. Perched in a wooden bungalow overlooking steep tea plantations, the morning starts with heavy mist and low-hanging clouds rolling through the valleys. Watching the sun break through the mountain fog while sitting on a wooden deck with a spread of hot çay, local cheeses, freshly baked bread, and hazelnut butter is easily one of the most grounding travel experiences you can have. 6-The Golden Limestone Hills: Morning Streets of Amman (Jordan) There is a rugged, authentic beauty to watching sunrise in a hill city like Amman. As the sun rises over the eastern ridge, its warm golden light washes across the iconic white and cream limestone buildings stacked along the steep hillsides. The cool morning air carries the faint scent of fresh bread from neighborhood bakeries opening their doors, while the long shadows slowly shrink across the empty stone staircases and quiet residential streets. 7-The sunrise at the airplane ✈️. Looking through these moments, it becomes clear that every destination reveals its true, unfiltered character in the quiet of the morning before the rush of tourism takes over. So, I want to open this up to the community: Are you an early-bird traveler who sets alarms for sunrise photography, or are you strictly on team sleep-in until noon when you're on holiday? Out of these six styles, which sunrise setting speaks to you the most: beach waves, peaceful rivers, hotel room city views, mountain clouds over breakfast, harbor marinas, or quiet city streets? Drop your favorite morning travel photos and tips below—where is the best sunrise you've ever caught? 👇 #sunrisescenes #pisa #italytravel #italy #travel #spain #barcelona #jordan #airplane

Barcelona was one of those cities where I could easily spend a whole day exploring without paying for attractions. I just put on comfortable shoes and started walking, which turned out to be a great way to see the city. I began around La Rambla, enjoying the busy atmosphere before wandering into the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter. I loved getting slightly lost there every corner seemed to reveal an old building, tiny square, or interesting doorway. From there, I walked toward Barcelona Cathedral, admiring its impressive Gothic architecture from the outside. Later, I headed to Arc de Triomf and continued through Parc de la Ciutadella, where locals were relaxing under the trees. In the afternoon, I made my way up to Bunkers del Carmel. The climb was worth it for the wide views over Barcelona, especially as the light started changing toward sunset. I finished near Barceloneta Beach, walking along the waterfront and watching people play sports by the sea. What I enjoyed most was discovering Barcelona at my own pace. Between historic streets, parks, architecture, and viewpoints, I never felt like I needed to spend much money to have a memorable day. #barcelona #spain
