At the end of August last year during our annual leave, we took the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop, passing through Dunhuang Mogao Caves, Jiayuguan, and also visited Zhangye Matisi Temple. I didn’t expect Zhangye to be so suitable for family trips, so this National Day holiday we specifically brought the kids here again. It’s hard to imagine that within 1-3 hours’ drive from the city, you can take your kids to see such diverse landscapes as snow-capped mountains, grasslands, deserts, canyons, and wetlands, and also visit cultural sites like Matisi Temple and the Giant Buddha Temple. Previously, I was most impressed by the Duku Highway, but Zhangye is really much more family-friendly! Zhangye’s scenery is beautiful, varied, and rich in layers—truly a wonderful surprise. Most people on the Qinghai-Gansu loop just treat this place as a stopover and only visit the Danxia landform, which is such a pity. The Northwest is truly a “spiritual recharge station” for us city parents. Looking at the vast wilderness and distant mountains, the golden meadows and streams beneath the snow mountains, it feels like traveling with kids has more hope and joy. The route from Matisi Temple to Jinta Temple is not yet a regular route; self-driving or chartering a car is more convenient. Staff said that visiting Jinta Temple/Daduma Village is free of charge (may change in the future). Day1: Nationwide ✈️ Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport or arrive in Xining on your own ➡️ Qinghai Lake Heimahe Scenic Area, avoid Erlangjian Scenic Area, tickets are expensive and not scenic. It is the largest inland saltwater lake in China. It is said there is a small island in the center of the lake where a group of nuns go to practice every year and return after one year 😃. If lucky, you can see flocks of seagulls. On the way out, you can buy a cup of yak milk tea to try ➡️ Next stop Chaka Salt Lake, known as the "Mirror of the Sky." Be careful not to go too late; after 5 or 6 pm, the lighting is not good. There is a small rail train 🚂 (park transportation) inside the scenic area, you can experience the feeling of the old salt mining train. Day3: Depart from Golmud ➡️ Wusute Water Yadan, take a small sightseeing car into the park. There are camels, boat rides, powered paragliding, and other entertainment activities, with many photo 📷 and check-in spots ➡️ On the way to the next stop, Dacaidan Emerald Lake, you will pass the classic U-shaped road photo spot on National Highway 315, but parking is not allowed ⚠️. I think Dacaidan Emerald Lake is the most beautiful among these salt lakes, mainly small lakes with different colors, including blue-green and yellow salt lakes. History enthusiasts can spend more time here ➡️ Return to the hotel for a rest at noon, then go to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring around 5 or 6 pm. Don’t go later than this; camels also finish work 🤓. Enter from the middle gate and exit from the middle gate. There are many camels in Mingsha Mountain, grouped in fives, walking in a line. The most beautiful scenery is at the last stop — Jinbo Lake, with deep blue water like a mirror, surrounded by poplar trees, very photogenic, with flocks of swans and wild ducks ➡️ If you arrive at Jiayuguan too late, visit the fortress city the next day. The best viewing season for rapeseed flowers is July to August. Summary: The total trip length is over 3000 km, with long daily drives mainly on national highways. The roads are sometimes straight without curves and lack reference points, causing visual fatigue. Be sure to take breaks ⚠️. The diet mainly consists of beef and mutton 🥩 and Sichuan cuisine 🌶️. Note ⚠️ some halal restaurants do not allow 🚫🍺 alcohol; ask the staff in advance when dining. The Qinghai Lake to Heidushan section is on the plateau, with an altitude around 3000 meters. Be careful ⚠️ to avoid strenuous exercise, do not wash hair or bathe, and people with poor health should not drink alcohol. After Dunhuang, the altitude drops to about 1500 meters, then you cross the Qilian Mountains (altitude rises to about 3500 meters) back to Xining. We stayed at a local hotel nearby, which was really nice to wake up and just walk to the temple. There are plenty of beautiful surrounding walk, and I would highly recommend going and walking up the many steps to the viewing platform opposite the stupas! Getting There - 30min drive from West gate of Danxia Park Attractions - futuristic park with mountains of different colours and shapes. We were staying near Danxia Park and were offered to go to the Binggou Scenic Area. It took us about 30min to get there, the entrance was about 170rmb. You can drive your car around the park or use a public transport (van, car or bus). Important: the ticket office is about 25min away from the park entrance, make sure you buy your ticket first and then go to the entrance. From Guiyang to Lanzhou, Xining, and Dunhuang, these seven days felt very unreal to me. I had wanted to travel the big Northwest loop since I was a student but never had the chance. Unexpectedly, this impulse led me into the landscapes from my geography books. - From wandering by the Yellow River in Lanzhou to the sand dunes in Dunhuang, in 7 days I soaked in the "top-tier romance of the Great Northwest": stepping on unmelted snow in the Qilian Mountains, touching the sand in the cracks of the Mogao Caves walls, and seeing the Chaerhan Salt Lake that looks like spilled apple juice. - But the caves of the Mogao Caves are truly breathtaking! Those faded murals and cracked clay sculptures seem to wrap the winds of a thousand years inside the walls—the painter’s brush, the pilgrim’s footsteps, the camel bells in the desert—all echoing in this narrow space, even the air slows down. - Standing on the salt flats of Chaka Salt Lake, I truly understood what it means to be “as fleeting as a mayfly”: the sky is a laid-out blue, the lake is the reflected clouds, and when the wind blows, even shadows feel light enough to float away. All anxieties and troubles don’t even count here in this vast world. - This trip felt like a stolen dream—now staring at the album, my mind is still filled with the sunset at Mingsha Mountain, Lanzhou’s beef noodles, and the wind at Qinghai Lake.

Background: With only one day, I was incredibly torn between Ping Shan Lake Grand Canyon, Balsi Snow Mountain, Rainbow Mountains, and Mati Temple beforehand. Today we climbed the grottoes, saw the continuous Qilian Mountains, hiked a short snowy path to the South Temple, rode horses into the forest, visited a pasture and saw herds of horses at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, and finally saw flocks of sheep at the Gesar King Temple. It was a very fulfilling day! 😭The off-season is great! You can even book a car until 4 pm for the same price as a half-day tour.

On a whim, I decided to visit the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. After looking around, I decided to go all the way! Guangzhou to Yinchuan! 6-day self-driving tour of Yinchuan-Zhongwei-Lanzhou I bought a plane ticket and set off! Day 1: Guangzhou ✈️ Yinchuan. After landing and checking into the hotel, I tried some local specialties, spicy broth (Yang Ji skewers!). Day 2: The day before was all for today! Crossing! Five! Lakes! Looking for a tour leader. Day 3: The first day of the self-driving tour. In the morning, I went to the Western Xia Mausoleums. I think it's worth a visit as it's the only World Heritage site this year. You definitely need to watch the documentary first, or just see the mounds. The place is quite large. We spent 4 hours there. Tickets were free, but we bought shuttle tickets for Mausoleum No. 3 and the Twin Mausoleums (40 RMB). After that, we headed to Zhongwei! ‼️ Avoid the highways the whole way to experience crossing the Helan Mountains - desert (Inner Mongolia) - oasis! Super cool! Location: Ant Forest Forest No. 174 Day 4: The night before, I stayed at the Zhongwei Yellow River Hostel. So after waking up, I strolled around the park and took some photos. You can see the Ming Dynasty city wall. After breakfast, I headed to Zhongwei city. There wasn't much to do in the city, so I just bought some goji berries and left. Heading to Baiyin-Yongtai Ancient City Day 5: The night before, I stayed at a resident's home in Yongtai Ancient City. Sleeping on a heated kang (traditional brick bed), it was quite unique. 80 yuan per bed. The lady there made incredibly delicious hand-pulled noodles! Yongtai Ancient City is listed by China National Geographic as one of the ten most disappearing wonders in China. Worth a visit! Note that there's no commercial activity here, so it can be quite boring. See the monkeys! The monkeys returned home around 4:45 pm. I left around 8 or 9 am. Opposite the city gate are the snow-capped Qilian Mountains. So beautiful! After breakfast, we headed to Lanzhou. In the afternoon, we visited the Readers' Museum and a coffee shop. Day 6: We checked into a hotel near Zhongshan Bridge in Lanzhou the first day. If you have a car, I recommend the [eLong Ruiyun Hotel]. It's one of the few hotels near Zhongshan Bridge with free parking. It's newly opened, so all the facilities are excellent! In the morning, you can drive to Zhongshan Bridge, the Yellow River Mother Sculpture, and Mogouyan Beef Noodles. Afterwards, we drove to the entrance of Wei Chen's alma mater, Lanzhou Refinery No. 1 Middle School, for a photo op. (Non-fans can skip this, hahaha). Lanzhou Old Street was an unexpected discovery, perfect for killing time. Then we drove to the airport to return the car. 👌🛫 Guangzhou
